  • little surprised i found this

  • Saw Steve Smith play in Reading, PA on several occasions, and man, what a phenomenal drummer.

  • very exciting!

  • GREAT TECHNIQUE...HES A BEAST

  • I always liked the deep snare tuning Smith goes with. I emulate that and don't tune my snare high.

  • He had hair?

  • @ke70hibino xDDDDhahahahaa;...D

  • Hated this. The playing is awesome, but the soundengineer needs to be slapped. Everything compressed. Everything same level. One huge stupid thumb chokin' the life outta the track. Sure, it was the popular sound back then. . .but popular and good are not often the same things. . .

  • This is fucking great!

  • That's the first drum video I watched as a kid learning to play the drums... on VHS! Hehehe.

I'd almost forgotten, but what a great session that was! Thank you Steve Smith!

  • is that Paul Schaffer on drums or Steve Smith ....

  • Good thing he made all his cash with Journey, because Jazz does not pay.... it's just too.... (much, complicated, sophisticated), complex, esoteric).... for the average masses to get.... I'm a drummer and played rock and jazz in bands.... Steve must have been bored playing 4/4 rock..

    .

Big long drum solos that are out of context 5 min long showboats bore me, but in the context to a song, as this is fascinates me.

  • Did he crash that cymbal on the bottom @ 1:03 ??

  • I have this VHS somewhere and I saw him perform a clinic here in Tampa many eons ago at Thoroughbred Music.....From a former heavy metal drummer's POV, I like that he's using a deep snare here. I hate that most jazz/funk drummers, if not all, automatically go shallow with 5 inch (or less) piccolo snares.

  • @csrgatorfan Hate to disappoint ya, but Steve's current signature Sonor snare is a 5X14 heavy steel snare drum. The rest of his kit consists of a 14X20, and 8, 10, and 12 inch rack toms all 8 inches deep. He also has a 5X12 side snare and the floors are standard 14X14 and 16X16.

  • OMG this is Steve Smith from the bookworm parallel universe!

  • wonderfull

  • @MrCountryman1234 Steve is da'man : D

  • ohohoho he looks like better nowadays kkk

  • Nice solo on this. I had this record at the end of high school and loved this tune. This is before he revamped his technique too. I used to tell people that guy used to play in Journey and the drummer friends wouldn't believe me. Ha!

  • @Gretschdrums75 I was lucky enough to have met Smith : D in their face ha,ha : )

  • Fun!

  • The name of this song is : "The Perfect Date"

    It´s from the Vital Information album;

    Fiafiaga.

    : )

  • Out of curiosity, when was this produced?

  • This was produced in 1988

  • That's interesting because I saw Vital Information in 1989 at the Jazz Fest in Valley Forge, PA and Steve held a drummers' clinic the next day. I attended that with our drummer and actually got more out of that than the bass clinic I attended featuring Stu Hamm.

  • I once met Steve at a clinic as well, we talked for a bit.he is a really nice guy and a brilliant player! his passion for drumming is incredible! U can't get him off a set of drums once he starts. Steve is just one of those guy's that u can really learn a lot from!

  • giants steps??

  • ??? not sure

  • I love how great his chops are. Certainly better than Neil Peart on that front. This guy definitely has some of the best chops I've heard.

  • Have u ever been to Steves site? Have u seen all the records he's played on? He's in the top 100 pro players of the world! So i would have to agree with u........

  • wat band ur u in

  • I have not played with any 1 since the early 80's... our bass player/singer was Tom Araya. funny kerry got us kicked out of Madam Wongs cuz he was under 2! we had set up and done our sound check, then they found out his age.LOL now, but not then!!!

  • OO CRAP LOL

  • It's amazing to see Steve's progress from this video to now. I'm talking about drumset, and dress style! lol :-)

  • This was in the mid 90's, how things have changed...

  • Actually, I think this was in the mid-to-late '80s (like around '87, '88)! No?

  • Ur right!! i was think'n of when i bought this VHS was in the mid 90's....

  • yeah , Steve does not look like Paul Schafer anymore

  • Saw Steve in London @ Tony Scot's with Buddy's Buddies.

DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THIS GUY! HE IS THE REAL DEAL! HE PLAYS HIS ASS OFF! Saw Buddy years ago and he would have tipped his hat.

    t

  • Maaan Steve Smith is GOD!

Listen to Chromaticity or Edge of Insanity By Tony Macalpine.....

if anyone can post ...cause i dont know how .... :(

Some of this themes .... .

Night dive - Chimes - Snap out of it! - Necessary Autumn-

All of his Easier done than said by Vital Information.

  • People forget he played with Jean Luc Ponty in the seventies. Listen to Enigmatic Oceans by Ponty and hear Steve at his best. Proud to say he is a native of my home state Massachusetts.

  • ver forgot. I have my LP of Enigmatic Ocean and yes, Steves playing on it, made it one of my favorites among Pontys works. Cosmic Messenger is still my favorite though because we listened to it as we traveled to Lake Tahoe- It as a very nice trip

  • Dude looks like Horschack from that '70s show "Welcome Back Kotter," and sounds like an imitation of Steve Gadd

Love the '80s shmaltzy-porn soundtrack music and Miami Vice threads these cats are sportin'.

Nevertheless, Steve's a true master and artist par excellence.

  • If you going to imitate someone it might well be one the greats, Steve Gadd.

  • that looks nothin like his usual self

  • He makes it look so easy one

  • When was this recorded?Sometime in the late eighties?

  • he's got hair!!!

    love his jazz playing

  • The amazing thing is that Steve has probably improved at least 50% since this was made. And he was a genius then! He is truly the most versatile and intelligent drummer around. Thanks for posting.

  • I could not have said it any better! glad u enjoyed this.....

  • now this is what i call great jazz sound, it flows like water, it is that smooth

  • What can u say about Steve? he is one of the true Greats!!!!

  • this is as tight as a frogs arse !! bloody amazing stuff !!!

  • Steve is the man 4 SURE! I would like 2 post sum out takes from his last dvd but Y/T might pull it!

  • it's amazing how much he has improved since the days of journey. even here he has great chops and sounds amazing. one of the best in the world. imo.
