Hated this. The playing is awesome, but the soundengineer needs to be slapped. Everything compressed. Everything same level. One huge stupid thumb chokin' the life outta the track. Sure, it was the popular sound back then. . .but popular and good are not often the same things. . .
Good thing he made all his cash with Journey, because Jazz does not pay.... it's just too.... (much, complicated, sophisticated), complex, esoteric).... for the average masses to get.... I'm a drummer and played rock and jazz in bands.... Steve must have been bored playing 4/4 rock..
.
Big long drum solos that are out of context 5 min long showboats bore me, but in the context to a song, as this is fascinates me.
I have this VHS somewhere and I saw him perform a clinic here in Tampa many eons ago at Thoroughbred Music.....From a former heavy metal drummer's POV, I like that he's using a deep snare here. I hate that most jazz/funk drummers, if not all, automatically go shallow with 5 inch (or less) piccolo snares.
@csrgatorfan Hate to disappoint ya, but Steve's current signature Sonor snare is a 5X14 heavy steel snare drum. The rest of his kit consists of a 14X20, and 8, 10, and 12 inch rack toms all 8 inches deep. He also has a 5X12 side snare and the floors are standard 14X14 and 16X16.
Nice solo on this. I had this record at the end of high school and loved this tune. This is before he revamped his technique too. I used to tell people that guy used to play in Journey and the drummer friends wouldn't believe me. Ha!
That's interesting because I saw Vital Information in 1989 at the Jazz Fest in Valley Forge, PA and Steve held a drummers' clinic the next day. I attended that with our drummer and actually got more out of that than the bass clinic I attended featuring Stu Hamm.
I once met Steve at a clinic as well, we talked for a bit.he is a really nice guy and a brilliant player! his passion for drumming is incredible! U can't get him off a set of drums once he starts. Steve is just one of those guy's that u can really learn a lot from!
Have u ever been to Steves site? Have u seen all the records he's played on? He's in the top 100 pro players of the world! So i would have to agree with u........
I have not played with any 1 since the early 80's... our bass player/singer was Tom Araya. funny kerry got us kicked out of Madam Wongs cuz he was under 2! we had set up and done our sound check, then they found out his age.LOL now, but not then!!!
People forget he played with Jean Luc Ponty in the seventies. Listen to Enigmatic Oceans by Ponty and hear Steve at his best. Proud to say he is a native of my home state Massachusetts.
ver forgot. I have my LP of Enigmatic Ocean and yes, Steves playing on it, made it one of my favorites among Pontys works. Cosmic Messenger is still my favorite though because we listened to it as we traveled to Lake Tahoe- It as a very nice trip
The amazing thing is that Steve has probably improved at least 50% since this was made. And he was a genius then! He is truly the most versatile and intelligent drummer around. Thanks for posting.
little surprised i found this

I always liked the deep snare tuning Smith goes with. I emulate that and don't tune my snare high.

Dude looks like Horschack from that '70s show "Welcome Back Kotter," and sounds like an imitation of Steve Gadd
Love the '80s shmaltzy-porn soundtrack music and Miami Vice threads these cats are sportin'.
Nevertheless, Steve's a true master and artist par excellence.

If you going to imitate someone it might well be one the greats, Steve Gadd.
