i dont think those references relate to now... i think e is talking about all the undeniable oppression that black people have faced, and speaking, from a hopeful place, about what the individuals have actually suffered feel/felt and suggesting that they should actually move past all that has happened.
I'm just curious as to why anyone would listen to the words of this song and think that it is being racist. The song isn't about racsim at all. To me, I hear a call to wake up and stand for something, make a difference in the world, and to give your life meaning. If Mos Def was a white man, I would read the lyrics to the song and still get the same meaning. Our world does still struggle with racism, this is true, but I don't get that feeling from Mos Def's Umi.
Everytime so much shit is happening in my life at once, too much pressure, too many emotions running in one period of time... i listen to this and everything is and will be ok :) it reminds me to keep looking up and shine my light and talent upon the world.
WE ARE SO UNFOCUS SO DISTRACTED FROM THE PURPOSE UNTIL THE PURPOSE BECOME UNNOTICE. UNTIL ONE HIT HIS LOWEST BECOMING SO HOPELESS HOPING NO ONE NOTICE BUT ONLY YOU KNOW THIS LORD HOW HEAVY THIS LORD IS!
Hey people Dont let your anger get the best of you, America was built on Hate, & Racism. Lets not keep that cycle going. Lets understand each other and Move to bigger and better things. We all have struggles.

@nattynativekid17 Hey native you fucking don't get Irony Bitch...That's why you still a Native, in the fucking trees. LMAO.... Listen Boy is a response to all the Hate, apparently people here have to many issues with Mos Def Music and his Lyrics. It's amazing that this music and mostly all of Mos' songs barely get 1 million views and that mainstream shit gets in the 100 millions of views when this is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 better and it has meaning and helps people instead of just ignorant shit
I remember getting kicked out of my house (deserved) when I was 18 and living in a little room above a Chinese restaurant workin 12 hour days dishwashing, and bumping this when i got out drinking Red Dog.
@macram16 it was amazing! Rakim & De La Soul supporting. then blackstar doing a track, then a mos def track, then a kweli track and they kind of went with that pattern all the way through. it was dope! they were all amazing obviously but i think mos killed it! i saw him perform with the gorillaz a little while back and he killed it then too. even my brother who isnt that much into hip hop said he thought he was the best performer.
there are vids up on here, search "black star hammersmith ".
@ILLER121 I was at that concert as well. It was my first Hip-hop concert and i don't think any future concert i go too will top that. This song got maaad reception
@thashaikh88 yeah it was at hammersmith apollo. its a shame you didnt get to see de la, the crowd went crazy when they did me myself and i. but yeah obviously still worth it! did blackstar bring on jay electronica in manchester?
@ILLER121 Nar they didn't...but was still amazing. Mos finished off with Travellin Man which was a treat. He was pullin some smooth moves all night man.
But Rakim was just something else as well...Don't sweat the technique got a helluva reception. Top gig!
Powerful Eyes of Allah Cee Everything.... Tomorrow may never come, for you and me life is not promised. Shine your light on the World.....everyday!!!!!
This joint is the best track on the Black on Both Sides Album. Word Up... It's so dope that even the G.O.A.T. Michael Jordan had to use it in his commercial!
I'm just gonna say that, from one white person on the internet to another, you may wanna town down the arbitrary judgment calls, and the distant conclusions you're jumping to, and the racism. Especially the racism.
This song crosses gender, economical, cultural and maybe even racial boundaries, if you know your history. Everytime I hear this song it reminds me that neither myself or the people near to me are alone. HUMANE PEOPLE UNITE!!!!!
@DWADE1LOVE this is definitely across racial boundaries. i'm a whiteboy from the suburbs with a european ancestry and i can feel it 100%. this song is an example of how music is universal.
@DWADE1LOVE NO IF THAT WAS THE CASE HE WOULD SAY "I WANT ALL PEOPLE TO BE FREE" NOT "BLACK PEOPLE TO BE FREE"....I SEE WHAT YOU'RE SAYING BUT I'M SORRY, THIS SONG IS INDEED FOR US.
@DWADE1LOVE lol but at the end of the song he clearly says "ALL BLACK PEOPLE TO BE FREE (That's all that matters to me)!! BLACK PEOPLE! MY PEOPLE!" so it's obvious he's talking mainly about struggling black people.
Black people continue to suffer the brunt of pain and suffering in this plantet. As one who was born in Africa and had to move to Europe and the USA, it is painful to do this journey. WE, blacks, have had to bear the brunt of the weight of the world. Africans are the strongest individuals, emotionally and physically. We have no choice because the weaker die before the age of 10. The rest of us survive and can take on anything. We want our people to be free, to be free... and free.
@bibibman sorry that is the sort of thinking that has been holding black people back, there is a lot of other races and religions that have been suffering for longer and are still suffereing now
