Gandalf was a Maia (called Olorin) before he was transformed into a Istari (that kind of human beeing what the humans call "wizard") this Balrog was once an Maia too. If you ask me, this is a Big family feud! .-)
There is a moment before this scene, when they wait for the balrog and discuss what it actually is.Until Gandalf says "This foe is beyond any of you". Well, DUH! All the orcs ran away in fear. It's obviously not Winnie The Pooh! I know it's all for the suspens and sh@t, but it's much better if it makes sense - you see a much stronger enemy runs away immediately. It's obvious that a much much more strong enemy is comming. :D
Gandalf didn't just defeat the Balrog, he smote his ruin upon the mountain side, with authority...like a boss!
Not to mention Gandalf wasn't killed by the Balrog, he died of exhaustion! From the sheer amount of usage of magical POWER! And this was while he was still held at his most limited state of magic, before he was even Gandalf the White. Now tell me, how can anyone try to claim that Dumbledore is more powerful? I'll tell you how, they're in denial. Must be hard to comprehend such power
@trilerkiler Gandalf basically says it: "From the lowest dungeon to the highest peaks I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth." It doesn't happen instantly, these scenes are all coupled together from different points in Fellowship and Two Towers.
The title of this video is accurate, but the description text is not accurate. The name of the balrog is not Morgoth. The balrogs were servants of Morgoth, the great evil power who wove evil into the creation of the world. Morgoth was the master of Sauron.

@danielrocks234 true, this Balrog is called Durin's bane, since he killed Durin. Btw not all barlogs look like this, they are evil spirits created by Morgoth, neither did Gothmog - the lord of balrogs look like this one. Gandalf wouldn't be able to kill him if he didn't wear the Narya ring ("..wielder of the flame of Anor.."), wich is one of the Elf rings crafted by Celebrimbor.
I read once on cracked.com that "you shall not pass" was an actual battlefield command "they shall not pass" was the english translation as it was given in french.
Morgoth was defeated and thrown into prison or Hell if you like at the end of the First Age to rise again at the end of the world. Sauron escaped and began taking advantage of everyone else. Destruction of Numenor etc. He played a part in. The 5 Wizards ("Good" Maiar) were sent to Middle Earth from heaven to help combat him. I believe Sauron was also a powerful Maiar himself. This Balrog was not necessarily the last one as other may have escaped after Morgoth's downfall.
@DebuSan1 Morgoth was the greatest evil in LOTR as he was the mightiest of the Ainur that turned to evil. Sauron was his chief lieutenant and the strongest of the Maiar. The Balrogs were all Maiar of Fire that turned to Morgoth's service and there was only 7 of them to begin with. 1 was killed by Glorfindel, the captain of them at Gondolin, Durin's Bane by Gandalf and I think 1 more which leaves 3 of them unaccounted for.
@CrashB111 was just lookin' all that stuff up. its like finding out that santa has a boss of his boss, or the pope is actualy working for somone higher who works for somone even higher..... that is real, in the same world and will one day come back to kick our asses. it got confusing so i solved the problem and turnd my brain off.
I will throw in some of my nerdiness, Morgoth was the original Dark Lord who was far more powerful than Sauron or anyone except god (Eru Illuvutar is his name in the mythology I think) Morgoth was essentially the most powerful of all of god's angels you could say, and was sort of like lucifer in that he tried to corrupt (and succeeded to some degree) everything good that was made. He created the Orcs etc. The corrupted lesser angels or Maiar became Balrogs. Sauron was a Lieutenant of Morgoth.
3:12 is the most accomplished scene out of any movie ever made. It brings tears to my eyes & makes me want to literally worship tolkien and jackson. That's like the definition of epic.
For those that haven't read the Silmarillion (i.e. sane people), you should know that this fight is actually a lot more even than it appears.
Gandalf AND the Balrog were, before arriving on Middle Earth, spiritual beings of roughly equal power. These are simply the forms they have upon reaching Middle Earth, which only barely affects what they can do.
As a matter of fact, it's fairly obvious that the Balrog's size is making it hard for it to fight him. Odd, that.
What's scary is that, in the book, Gandalf said while he was fighting the Balrog he also encoutered "Nameless Things" that gnawed at the innards of the Earth. So basicly after this scene, he got attacked by Cthulu.
I used to watch Lord of the Rings when I was 5 and this scene gave me nightmares for months and whenever my mom walked in I would say "You shall not pass!"
@wsysacz "From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought the Balrog".
Actually in the book Gandalf describes as Balrog left the underground lake and he followed him to the stairs that lead to mountain peak (even dropping names of few places he sees doing that).
@wsysacz He landed at the bottom of moria, where other creatures than dwarves dug tunnels and labyrinths unknown... Only durin the great (a dwarf) and his company went there once, they dug a spiral staircase straight up to the top of the Celebdil (a mountain in the Misty Mountains). Gandalf fought the Balrog of Morgoth all the way to up there where he smote the balrog off the mountain
@devxc There are things that have wings that cannot fly. Maybe the wings arn't large enough to allow for it to fly--look at the fel beast's wingspan, it's huge!
@DrDrake93 They were not going at terminal velocity. When Gandalf straightened himself he reached terminal velocity faster because he was cutting through air easier. The objects falling at the same rate thing only works if there is no air resistance.
Morgoth could take any shape he wanted...including a giant mountain. His dark lord shape was bigger or at least equal to this Balrog in size I believe (at least according to images on google in his battle with Fingolfin)

English is not my language so i may not understand what you trying to say.
@mjonas10 the dwarves made that bridge so narrow to make it serve as a defensive choke point, if enemies were to break through the eastern gate, they'd have to cross this bridge in a narrow line and be exposed to projectiles of the dwarves
This is exactly what annoys me about the people who have seen the trilogy and the people who have read the books, oh how did they get on that icy mountain, how come the balrog can fly? fuck if your so curious about these little details read the fuckin books or go on wiki its all thier for the ammatures that really dont have any knowledge what so ever in tolkiens story.
You know you see these monsters in movies and such and they are cool and all cause you know they are fake. But could you just imagine one day walking outside and an actual Balrog is just standing in front of you, I mean honestly...what would you do?
please stop being the same minded people and saying the same arrow fraze all over and over again.. Whats the point of it? Do you get paid for repeating like a robot? NOOO
Gandalf, True Name Olorin - is a Maiar, a spirit given human form. He is the most powerful and wisest member of the Order of the Five Wizards. He is also a very cunning strategist, and he wields Glamdring, a two-handed sword which means "Foe-hammer" in old Elvish. He also wears the ring Narya. One of the Three Rings of the Elves.
His opponent is a fiery demon, a former Maiar itself, and a creature described as "shadow and flame".
This alone... for the sole reason that he fought the Balrog from the lowest dungeon to the highest peak... the freaking BALROG...this alone is all the proof I need to prove that Gandalf is just straight up better than Dumbledore in every conceivable way. I won't even go so far as to bring up the fact that death just made Gandalf that much more powerful.
@PxChAoS16 The Balrog went back up via the Endless Stair, Gandalf chased him. The Endless Stair took them from the foundations all the way up to Durin's Tower.
"Gandalf! But...you fell...we thought you were dead!" - "Nah...just killed myself some Balrog" - "But how?" - "Gimli...I'd 've thought you'd know by now that I am the most Awesome wizard ever"
Epic! but..
Gandalf was a Maia (called Olorin) before he was transformed into a Istari (that kind of human beeing what the humans call "wizard") this Balrog was once an Maia too. If you ask me, this is a Big family feud! .-)

Why would anyone make a bridge like that?

@mjonas10 for the lol's
Chasolk 2 months ago
@Chasolk brilliant response lol
fistacuff56 2 months ago
@mjonas10 the dwarves made that bridge so narrow to make it serve as a defensive choke point, if enemies were to break through the eastern gate, they'd have to cross this bridge in a narrow line and be exposed to projectiles of the dwarves

This is exactly what annoys me about the people who have seen the trilogy and the people who have read the books, oh how did they get on that icy mountain, how come the balrog can fly? fuck if your so curious about these little details read the fuckin books or go on wiki its all thier for the ammatures that really dont have any knowledge what so ever in tolkiens story.

GrainghisKhan12 2 months ago
You know you see these monsters in movies and such and they are cool and all cause you know they are fake. But could you just imagine one day walking outside and an actual Balrog is just standing in front of you, I mean honestly...what would you do?

Gandalf, True Name Olorin - is a Maiar, a spirit given human form. He is the most powerful and wisest member of the Order of the Five Wizards. He is also a very cunning strategist, and he wields Glamdring, a two-handed sword which means "Foe-hammer" in old Elvish. He also wears the ring Narya. One of the Three Rings of the Elves.
His opponent is a fiery demon, a former Maiar itself, and a creature described as "shadow and flame".
Prof. Tolkien really was a genius.

PxChAoS16 2 months ago
@PxChAoS16 The Balrog went back up via the Endless Stair, Gandalf chased him. The Endless Stair took them from the foundations all the way up to Durin's Tower.
