  • Incredible brass, comparable with the Chicago SO! Wish they'd put a camera on those guys more often.

  • Someone here said "Tchaikovsky's endings are all the same" you should listen to Symphony No. 6. You wanna talk about tragic!

  • I did this with the Tennessee All-State Orchestra in 2005. So fricking amazing!!!

  • if anyone gets a chance to perform this, please do. its just awesome and you get goosebumps at the end

  • This is music

  • @ctran04 Well I don't know where you live but it sounds nice. Where both Trombonebro and I are from, liking classical music basically makes you a Pariah. That's not even a large exaggeration.

  • @trombonebro Excuse you. Not all teenagers are cellphone addicted, undedicated, and culturally unaware as you seem to think. In fact, most of the people in my school (I'm a highschooler) listen to classical music. It's not surprising to hear the brass of a Mahler Symphony in the parking lot or a kid in the back of the classroom humming Finlandia. Youth today need more role models and less critics.

  • Best percussion I've heard on this and that's coming from a string player

  • That was thoroughly enjoyable! 5 stars *****

  • What I love is how their conductor is most def not boring :D

  • This is what I think of when I think Romantic orchestra. What a perfect sound.

  • This cymbalist is legendary.

  • @ridely700 The 5:43 is the most amazing =D

  • @chandingding5 From 8.26 onwards is also damn good

  • This is really minute and random, but I REALLY love the two notes before the very last ones in this recording. Never heard them like that before.

  • @JASmahler Yeah! You're right. Good ear. Props to the cymbalist on this one too.

  • Great counting cymbalist! You're hired! 8:28

  • It makes me sad that amazing music like this is only getting 142,349 views while Rebecca Black and Justin Bieber are getting way into the millions. I don't wanna live in this world anymore. People's perception on real talent is dead. If our most famous artists are digitally enhanced people "singing" the same chord progression... I quit. Tchaikovsky is simply amazing. The musicians in this orchestra (along with Chicago Symphony, and New York Phil, etc) are the epitome of talent.

  • @hollytree1996 Don't quit! Only those whom remain affiliated with true talent and art will know what true art is! Yes, it is sad that certain individuals get recognition for noise they produce! At least an artistic elite minority know what true music is and how emotional it can be when it reaches the soul! "Don't quit! It's society's mask, it's society's way." Just don't follow modern music. Doesn't matters what others think! At least you know this is real art!

  • @hollytree1996 don't forget itzhak and gil and gluzman and Heifetz ;)

  • @hollytree1996 Pop is about entertainment not talent. I don't think anyone is arguing Bieber is a better musician than Tchaikovsky.

  • @DemonstrativePronoun Go talk to any teenager now and they'll say "classical music doesn't sound good DURRRRR". It's not about entertainment.

  • @trombonebro Lol music isn't about entertainment? Then why the hell do people pay money for it? I feel sorry for you if you aren't entertained by music. You're missing our on quite an amazing experience.

  • Comment removed

  • @hollytree1996 people dont think ppl like that are talented, they just like that kind of music. some like classical, some like pop. dont be so sad lol

  • Thomas definitely has a better interpretation of this piece than Barenboim IMO.

  • 6 people played it under Barenboim

  • Comment removed

  • If the man could weigh in I believe he would argue with Jansons on his finale.

  • love Davies symphony hall <33333

  • This is actually my favorite version. This is exactly how the ending should be played.

  • I attended a performance of this LAST NIGHT (7.21.2011) and was blown away!!!! I'm proud to have the SFS local to me. :)

  • Rousing. And some of the best cymbal work I've ever heard or seen!

  • but very good clash cymbal player..

  • hmm i prefer barenboim, MTT's style of conducting is not the right for this symphony, i think..

  • why you didn't upload it in better quality?

  • Tchaikovsky's endings are all the same but each of them are special <3

  • OK, I promise not to post anything else w/ the word "correct" in it. hahaha!

  • I'm 15 and would like to say, I Love This.

  • @icecreammman I think the world needs more people like you!

  • Phenomenal! I'll have to see this performed live sometime! :)

  • as a fellow string player... the ending is mindnumbingly difficult!!

  • 5:24 ..... I can hear Tchaikovsky screaming.

  • I've heard it hundreds of times. Now even say: BRILLIANT!

  • Yawn.

  • props to MTT for 3 crash cymbals at the epic climax.

  • @Lassannn to bad this isnt classical music, its actually music from the romantic period. Know your stuff before you comment.

  • @vballstar5 can be used both as a time period or a genre in general

  • @vballstar5 Too bad you can't spell or use apostrophes correctly when you pointlessly and incorrectly flame someone. BTW, ppgppgppgppg is correct.

  • i hate michael tilson, hes an annoying fagg

  • @CrazyAd88 He's better then you so quit your trolling one one of the worlds best conductors.

  • @CrazyAd88 I agree. He loves the sound of his own voice and never shuts the hell up

  • @oddzilla1 exactly!!

  • Comment removed

  • MTT PWNS Barenboim and the San Francisco Symphony PWNS the Chicago Symphony.

  • @sahand144 Since when did conductors become wrestlers and symphonic renditions become a wrestling matches?

  • @sahand144 YES! YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!! :)

  • @stevenholloway2135

    @jTg829

Why don't both of you calm down? Please, it's bad enough that music in the world is a constant struggle and music education is floundering and conservatories are turning out students who cant find jobs. But neither one of you are demonstrating the social graces that would invite people to such wonderful music. I'm 18 years old, and calling you out. Please, just read this and think, don't snap back, that proves you're immature.

  • @saotomi5102 Out of the mouths of babes...

  • Intensity of the song? Are you retarded? This is not a song, it is a symphony. Some of the comments people make on youtube are so ignorant. Maybe when you can tell the difference between a song and a symphony people might actually listen to what you have to say about anything pertaining to music.

  • @stevenholloway2135 Okay, so excuse for not technically using "song" correctly. But there is absolutely no need for you to castigate me like that. All my music teachers have used "song" for years to refer to any musical piece so who are you to blame me for not knowing the difference. Music is supposed to cater to everyone, and anyone with observant ears can freely critique it or at least make comments. By the way, your ad hominem attack was pathetic.

  • Epic!! In all honesty though, in my opinion, Barenboim's conducting (or lack thereof) matches the intensity of the song better. But Thomas always seems to have a smile up there. lol.

  • No offense to all of you guys playing Tchaik 4 in a band, but to me, that would be like hearing Chopin played by a kazoo choir:) jk :)

  • One of the best in the world.

  • Wow, so high energy on the runs and precision, sooooo beautiful at the slow 5:44-7:17.Every note heard despite the echos. Brilliant!

  • May be playing this for competition this year....director put this in front of me and I went ".....*pass put*" lol

  • I can guarantee you, the finale of every song brings the maestro pleasure comparable to that of cumming

  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • is there a hole in the cymbal??

  • @peanutmabob It's hard to tell if there is a hole, but if there is, it could be to prevent a vacuum when the two cymbals are hit together....I've seen one pop inside out once from that.

  • Just noticed the tempo marking at the beginning. Should probably be "Allegro con fuck you!" instead

  • @hostrauer yes, its a bitch to play haha

  • du punch, du dynamisme, de la virtuosité, une très belle version .....

    annick b.

  • That oboe player looks like he is having fun

  • I felt Chicago was a bit better in the strings, but San Francisco maintained superior ensemble balance throughout the piece. I liked Barenboim's conducting style better, but felt Thomas and the SFSO handled the big accelerando at the end much better. It's like comparing emeralds to rubies: who's to say which is better? They're both gems!

  • I got to see this at the San Francisco Symphony and i must say that it was awesome. It was my first time to a symphony and I'm in love ;p those guys and gals with MTT are amazing.

  • @tsabrott You are right . the san francisco symphony and MTT are AWESOME!

I played the violin in the San Francisco Symphony for 44 years.

Look for the recording of Shostokovich 11 symphony . Despair-Noisy-Angry. And yet with moments of hope that are heart wrenching.

  • this brings me back to playing it in orchestra hall with my high school band. tchaikovsky was a genius.

  • Barenboim WHO?????

  • @larryryals44

    Barenboim who?"?

You mean the really awesome conductor that used to be with CSO and is still world famous and very reputable?

  • @nottravis28 Agreed. Daniel Barenboim is an excellent and rightfully world-renowned conductor. I meant no disrespect. My comment arose from my incredulity and confusion that the Barenboim vid has almost 4 times the views of this clearly superior interpretation. In the same spirit that a Saints fan would say "Colts WHO?" following his team's victory in the last super bowl.

  • @larryryals44

I mean, I really don't know how to say that one is completely superior over the other. I agree with hostrauer.

But, since I'm a college hornist, I'm just really really into the CSO brass.

  • @nottravis28 Yeppers. I see your point for sure. CSO brass is freaking AMAZING! And always has been. For me personally, I REALLY like MTT's conducting style. Not only the theatrical flair and the way he emotes and engages w/ the music, but the way he carefully controls and modulates each tempo and shades each nuance and effect perfectly. The sheer fiery excitement of the conclusion of the SFSO version blows me away every time! Can't sit still!! But yeah, they're both awesome for sure! :)

  • @nottravis28 Btw, the reason I started this whole thing was that some clueless idiot posted a comment on the Barenboim vid that read "btw, michael tilson thomas can't lay a finger on barenboim." I just WASN'T gonna let that pass w/out serious correction.

  • @larryryals44

Yeah, personally, I like Barenboim better, but wouldn't go as far as saying that. The only thing I really dislike about MTT is that he doesn't let his brass play out as much as Barenboim does.

  • @nottravis28 Yep. Again, just me personally, I can't discern any problematic lack of power in the SFSO brass. The overall ensemble blend is superb and the brilliance of the orchestrations shines through. To my ears, the SFSO brass is KILLER when it needs to be, like at the middle 3/4 change. But yeah, we just have different ears. On that level, it's really just a slight variance of EXTREME levels of excellence. :)

  • @nottravis28

i think its the perfect blend, and thats coming from a bass trombonist!! lol

    Balls to the wall!!!!

  • @babtrombone haha! You are correct, sir! The SFSO brass is like the Santa Clara Vanguard hornline in condensed form!! lol.

  • Easiest 9 minutes you'll ever spend on YT. Go ahead, watch Beyonce, I guess she's good looking at least. 200 years from now, you think anyone's gonna be diggin some Beyonce on YT? What about the Tchai man? Ya daggone right.

  • @Lassannn The Tchai Man rules! :)

  • Everything was great except for that last note. It was a little boring compared to the excitement of the previous 9 minutes leading up to it. Still great video. Thanks for posting.

  • Those who don't know any better say classical music is boring.

  • @Lassannn If this is 'boring', then I want to be bored all the time.

  • Holy crap!!! Did you see the symbol player at the end?! Freaking beast!!!!!

  • WHO IN THE HOLY HELL DISLIKED THIS?!?! Probably Justin Bieber 4 times.

  • the tubist is a freakn beast!!!!

  • Why isn't THIS the national anthem??

  • @DongleKumquat ahahhahhaah because we come from boring pilgrims ahhahahaa

  • a world without classical music is not worth living :(

  • perfect !!!

    love it so much =)

  • Partial to Barenboim's interpretation myself, but I suppose I really out to be thanking Tchaikovsky for this masterpiece in the first place!

  • wonderful!!

  • It's great, but I think it could use a little more crash cymbal, lol.

  • i have set a goal to attempt to get into that syphony

  • @kaosgirl213 GO FOR IT!! don't let you passion go!

  • Holy Sh*t!!!

  • On the full DVD of this, I love the moment when one of the cams catches MTT offstage just afterwards, joking with the crew --

    "That was a GRRRROWL-worthy performance!"

    lol...perfect.

  • That was BREATHTAKING!!! What an explosive conclusion =D

  • @Zorchalate: LMAO!! @tenniscrazy2: You are correct. I had the opportunity to play cymbals on this piece w/ the UAH wind ensemble in Huntsville, AL, when I was in high school & I will NEVER forget it. One of the most exciting experiences of my life. WAY BETTER than playing timpani on the Shostakovich 5!!

  • Man I would be nervious being in an symphony like this cause if you mess up theres no turning back. Nevertheless, Great piece of you posted thank you!

  • WOW!!!! OMG, Michael Tilson Thomas KICKS ASS!!!! More exciting than a nuclear war!!

  • I wonder if it's fun or painful to be the cymbals player in this piece. I guess it's a little of both.

  • Wow. My chops are tired just from listening to that....

  • Love his conducting, great smile and contact with his musicians, would perform with him.

    Roger-Luc Chayer, french horn

  • What would happen if a meditation and relaxation therapist were to try and sell a tape for sleep or relaxation and used this as the music?

Matt, 39, from Walnut Creek, California (near S.F.)

  • wooow, this is absolutely amazing performance!!! there are a lot of brilliant videos of this movement... but I love this one, MTT is so hot and orchestra plays not just technically but also with a loooot of feeling. I can recognize Mrs. MUSIC in flute or oboe solos :D :) nice!

  • most beautiful first note EVER!!!!!!!

  • I love this song! We are playing this in band right now, as well as Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach! Both are nice and fast with lots of crazy sixteenth note runs in the flutes! They are challenging but both a lot of fun!

    JMJ+

    ~Betsy

  • this is my favorite version of symphony 4 4th movement

  • I get to go see the San Francisco Symphony next week!!!

  • Love MTT´s enthusiasm :) This orchestra combines excellent intonation and fantastic artmanship :)

  • Their sound is very rich with beautiful depth. Energy in "going foward" is superb.

  • I thought the same you say in your comment about two forms of conducting!

Two wonderful performances and different (thaks for this and for your video contribution)

  • Fantastic performance

  • ¡Espectacular! MTT,dinisimo heredero de Bernstein,la SFO soberbia!

  • Great!.. Go check out Chicago Symphony Orchestra [Tchaikovsky 4 FINALE]

  • Amazing!!! Probably the best version I've heard on YouTube. Like this one even better than the Barenboim version.

  • My school is playing this for festival......hopefull y we can build it up to this tempo because this awesome

  • Why is there a whole in the cymbal?

  • @jacobflaschen to prevent airlock. By the way, I think you meant "hole".

  • @muzomanoz Yeah I did

  • aaaah!!! the best piece ever, ever composed!! well, maybe second to Stravinsky's Firebird.

  • @joyfulaughter I like Tchaik 5 better

  • Wait, this isn't the one I played in class I don't think... there's one I played that sounds like Jaws in the beginning... was that Dvorjak?

  • You may be thinking about Dvorak's "New World Symphony" Mvt. 4

  • Phenomenal! Thanks!

  • now that, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done.

  • Really dramatic at 6:03!!! A very good performance!!!

  • bad ass

  • They play a long way behind the beat, how confusing!

  • Poor cymbal player. He looks exhausted there at the end!

  • 5:44 !!!!!!

  • If I didn't know better, I'd think you guys were talking about Dvorak's 9th :P

  • Just how I like my Symphonies. Big and Loud.

  • ROFL, my parents get pissed when I play stuff like this too loud XD

  • lol lassann

MTT's conducting is so quick and clean!

  • You know Tchaikovsky's gonna be popular in San Francisco. Superlative work, though, and superlative performance.

  • At 1:08, it feels like it slows down. I don't know whether Tchaikovsky intended it that way or not, but Barenboim's version doesn't have that feeling.

  • I agree, but I think it sounds a LOT better that way. Maybe it's just me :) I love it though, you can savor the tuba/bass trombone sound more haha. But really the low brass sound is phenomenal, no less.

  • Well of course it is! It's the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra no less. I agree with your comment but have no preference between this and the other video. I was just sayin' . . .

  • The three pairs of hand cymbals at 5:44 made me laugh.

  • ha, yeah, that was hardcore

  • Love watching this.a big shout out to my classmate Dan Smiley and his sister Mariko Smiley.

    Regards,

    Jan P

  • holy shit. that was amazing.

I would have totally gone to this concert just to watch MTT's face. HE IS BOSS.

  • MTT is a BEAST

    i love SFS

  • What an ensemble, words wouldn't not describe how marvelous they sounds.

  • OMG I LOVE THIS!!!!!!! GO OBOES!!!!!

  • we're playing this this semester in orchestra. I wish we sounded this good, but we are only a JC. I love Tchaikovsky. We played Marche Slave a year ago, and that was amazing. I hope to play many more of his works in the future.

  • Yes!

  • Isaw this performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra last night!!!! im still speechless!!

  • SFSO's bassoons have more presence in this performance than CSO's...

  • John Engelkes is a boss. Look at him playing that bass trombone.

Great tuba/bass trombone sound. Who's playing tuba in this? All I know is that it's not Jeff.

  • Wow... triple cymbals, that's pretty epic. Well, the whole thing is epic, ESPECIALLY the performance. How are the trumpets and horns so ON at 6:08 and 6:15?? Amazing!!!

  • I'm playing this now... So amazing!!

  • It's too Amazing!!

  • love it! we played the concert band arrangement of this in high school band. it was in E flat instead of F. lol. but it was fun and this is a great work!

  • Tremenda obra de Tchaikovsky,en este ultimo movimiento,es otra prueba de su grandeza como musico,Bravo.!

  • such a beautiful trombone section!

  • omg the song so critikal!!! how can i perform it no longger time?

  • OH MAN. SO GREAT.

    I WAS THERE.

  • Lucky.

Do you know if they'd do it again any time soon?

  • There are lots of energy and love! I want to be a Conductor.. I play piano and I love Music!

  • Seeing how happy the conductor is makes me want to become one haha.
