As a metalhead and fellow guitarist, all I can do is bow my head in reverence to a true god among men. I hope to be half that good someday, if I'm lucky. Although I'm a fan of heavy metal, I prefer to hear the guitar as it was meant to played.
In the documentary about juan serrano, he said that there are 3 main techniques to flamenco: the rasqueo, the tremolo and the scales. And he always uses all three in his pieces. I really haven't heard any of his songs that, for example, didn't contain tremolo.
A virtuose Master!!! Besides that, I am really respectful to teachers, such as Juan Serrano and Juan Martin. Owing to them, flamenco is now played worldwide, not only in Spain. Due to them, we do NOT have to go to Spain to learn flamenco. Thank you so much, Masters!!!
@dragmaster5635 We should start a petition for YouTube to remove the dislike button for videos like these and call it thus forth the Juan Serrano Award. It would be like a youtube nobel peace prize or something, ha! epic.

Dam!!! this man is awesome, i want to learn to play that well if possible. hopefully one day i will also be considered a master guitarist..cause that is what this man is.Juan Serrano master guitarist.
Juan Serrano may well be the best flamenco guitarist ever if you consider his accomplishments teaching at Berkley, his videos, books, CD's, years of performing, and recording. My favorite Serrano is from the 60's-80's. Also from that era are legends Sabicas and Escuerdo.
I first discovered Juan Serrano in my local thrift store, from an old vinly record called "Music of Spain and the Old World" ca. 1965. I was instantly hooked and am so glad to see more of Maestro Serrano's works here. Such great talent, I wish more of his work was readily available on CD.
Thanks Maestro Serrano for providing us with a truly emotional and fiery Spanish music...I tell all my music loving friends about your amazing talent....Salud!
Flamenco guitars have "golpeadors" for the golpe's (smacking :-)). It's a kind of transparant plate. (There are also white and black golpeadors but they are ugly imo)
most flamenco guitars have an acrylic tap plate that protects the guitar from scratches dents and other damage, but its hard to tell if the guitar he is playing has one or not
This piece is available on Juan Serrano's book "Flamenco Guitar Solos" published by Mel Bay. The title of the piece is "Alma" (Bulerias in Am). Though it's not exactly note by note, the main falsetas are there.
Toto no need to evolve the music form if its perfect, other flamenco guitarists are fast and boring which doesn't deserve 2 stars in my opinion.Juan Serrano is enjoyable to hear from beginning to end. Great Inspiration.
Actually, Juan has normal sized hands. This kind of mastery of the guitar comes from a lifetime of devotion and study (having played with a veritable lists of "who's who" doesn't hurt either!). Juan also has a natural gift of rhythm and musicality that few possess.
This is just a small example of why Juan is known as "The King Of The Flamenco Guitar".
@eldelacerda what about Paco de Lucia, Pepe Romero, and all the other flamenco guitarists? There's no "King of", every guitar master (and every guitarist our there) has his own style, his own ideas of sound, playability and so on.
@eldelacerda He is very good. But how can we decide on one "King of the Flamenco Guitar"? I believe there are many kings - Ramón Montoya, Sabicas, Niño Ricardo, Diego del Gastor, Paco de Lucía...etc.
I'm really not sure that this is "easier" than what Tomatito or even Amigo play (I except Nunez, which is a pure machine), not sure at all... ! It's more a question of style and chords than a question of technique, and you just have to let this music evolve at his rythme. We could say that Juan Serrano is very modern compared to, say, Diego del Gastor, but that's not the problem anyway, Diego has the Jerez sound, that's all...
Actually, I also like Serrano better. The others you mention are perhaps more versatile, faster, more creative even, but often their performances seem too manic to me. Serrano seems more traditional and for some of us, that is more impressive. All are fantastic though, and I also like Grisha Goryachev.
I'm sorry but those terms: versatile, faster, more creative and virtuosic are exactly the terms which could be applied to the greatest composer ever - ever, Beethoven!! Mozart's compositions were incredibly virtuosic, that is no criticism
Hi again. I see you are back listening to Serrano again, so you must like his playing too. I don't disagree with you in principle, but in taste. You can still have a preference to whom you would listen too. I say musical enjoyment, like beauty, is an abstraction held in the eye of the beholder. My taste for Spanish guitar favors Serrano over the others you mentioned, while admitting they are all superbly gifted musicians. Peace.
No problem, you are allowed your opinion and I am glad you appreciate flamenco guitar, so good on you for that. I appreciate Juan's deeply traditional playing of say soleares and seguiriyas but his compositions haven't progressed since the early 1960's. He is akin to Juan Martin, who though professional and hard-working has done little to evolve the music form.
I must agree with achsofromm on this one. Much of the modern flamenco seems very impressive technically, but to me it gets boring in the long run. Technic itself doesn't make music interesting I think. It's only a matter of passion, energy and a set of nice chords, of course. Old style guitarists like Juan Serrano and Paco Cepero rules! Over and out.
I think anyway that this is more "virtuosic" that one could guess, I'm really not sure that this is "easier" than what Tomatito or even Amigo play, not sure at all... ! It's more a question of style and chords than a question of technique...
Then you can;t have heard many guitarists! Go listen to Paco de Lucia, Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, Gerardo Nunez etc.. anyone can discern their superior far superior musicality and even technique! So before you make such comments do some research, what you said is simply ludricous to us aficionados and experienced flamenco guitarists!!
Well, still being a young American student of Flamenco. The more I listen to a variety of performers the more I appreciate the more traditional guitarist's, the sound of the 50's and 60's Flamenco's. Though I love the music of these "Virtuoso's" they don't move me like many older artists, Serrano's playing makes me want to jump out of my chair and stomp my feet. While Vicente Amigo puts me to sleep. I also think the "solo flamenco guitar" is overdone these days.
I love them all. Juan Serrano is an awesome player. Paco Cepero and Moraito make me want to jump up and dance as well, but to each his own. I just wish I could play half as well as any of these guys.
Cepero is one of my absolute favorites, he is such a master. I particularly like him because still being a student he plays in a way I can understand. Though I also love Jose Merce and Moraito.
Maestro Serrano is an AMAZING guitarist - but also, a great teacher! I studied with him for four years and he's been always patient, helpful and friendly. He has great technique, unique style and excellent rhythm!
Very nice buleria better than the bulerias I have heard by Tomatito and Vicente Amigo I have found hear (excuse but there bulerias are so boring and sounds as each other)
