to wdchefdave56, that's a funny son! A joke boy! Ain't no horse under that man! Pay attention when I'm talking! Nice kid but about as sharp as a sack of marbles.
It Twernt Mormons because Mormonism demands Blood Atonement. And leaving a man alive is leaving evidence of a Mormon Crime. Hence, Murder alone is insufficient, Blood Atonement is the rule. To understand this fully read "Blood Atonement and the Origin of Polygamy" 1907, by Joseph F Smith. The living dead prophet. He points out the deep connections between Mormon marriages and blood atonement. Just so happens I posted the book. Bring your slickers and a sharp knife, it's a messy little truth.
One of the funniest scenes ever, heard you wouldn't want to meet the real Jeremiah Johnson, but if he looked like Robert Redford ,I guess it would be worth the trip.
TWERENT THE MORMONS.... first seen JEREMIAH JOHNSON late 70's JUST NOW 30+ YEARS LATER.. IT HAS COME TO ME....he's making a jibe at the Mormans.. (mountain meadow masacre.,9.11.1857 Mormons murdered120 settlers....then blamed the Indians)...... i catch on fast...don't you think... HAHAHA
@sheepsfoot2 I highly doubt Del Gue was referencing the Mountain Meadow Massacre. The heyday of the Mountain Man was during the 1830s and 40s. Beaver was already getting scare by the time Jeremiah Johnson got out of the Mexican War in 1848. The Mountain Man lifestyle was changing and very short lived. Most became scouts for the wagon trains and gold seekers making their way west. Those who would want to continue the Mountain Man lifestyle would leave for Canada and Alaska loooong before 1857.
In retrospect it's amazing how short the Mountain Man era was. I believe it officially begins when private John Colter takes his leave of the returning Lewis & Clark expedition to join a pair of trappers heading back West just outside of St. Louis in 1806. I never got the exact circumstances of the end of the era but I gathered it had to do with a combination of changing fashion (the silk hat), and the domestication of the nutria, combined with the depletion of the beaver.
@brian8793 Stefan Gierash is the actor who protrays Del Gue. If you're talking about the guy in Wizard of Oz that actor is Frank Morgan who play several parts in the movie. Jerimiah Johnson was made in 1972 and Wizard of Oz in 1939 that would have made Stefan only 13 years old at the time. He did play the mayor in High Plans Drifter though. That is if that is who you were talking about.

The Indians would have taken his horse.
This guy was one of Robert (Sundance Kid) Redford's neighbors.
Almost all of this movie was filmed on Mr. Redford's land.
And, the "Mormons" would have left a second bible somewhere nearby for him to read at his leisure. Or, use as a head-shade.

To IExposeMormonism. The line is a joke. Your rant on Blood Atonement is a distraction from the humor. Poor horse. This is a great movie.
