have to agree hagar was so far down when you got lucky and got dave's spot. they made good songs during those years but nothing compares to the original VAN HALEN.
its like letting one of the beatles kids try to fill the spot....
FACT - They sold twice as many albums with Dave and grossed twice as much money with Dave.
Sammy would have faded in the 80's with Rick Springfield if DLR did not quit Van Halen. Sammy needs to get on his knees every night and thank Dave for the fame he inherited from David Lee Roth.
There is nothing that Hagar fans can do or say about that. They are fucked for life. Truth hurts!
@MrVHWolf hey dont bring rick springfield into this.he fucked his share of broads just like diamond dave im sure and rick stil has an illustrious career to this day
For me, the debate was never about the relative "quality" of the band live or in the studio with Hagar vs. Roth. What can never, EVER be disputed is the fact that VH never had this kind of insane, uncontrolled ENERGY of this line-up! The fact that Roth was all over the place was the perfect foil for the most lethal boogie band of all-time. People always want to call VH metal because of Eddie's paradigm-changing guitar skills. But these boys were a backyard party band that knew how to to groove!
this just goes to show that Da Da Da Dave was just a front man..........he couldn't sing shit in a fuckin' paper bag after they ripped it off his head
Broughmo Dude, you are on the money! The eighties were magic times fir music.I was in High school from 1980-1983,and I conceder myself VERY lucky to be around fir it all. Some people rag on the 80's music, yet MANY bands have had the balls to "sample 80's music to this very day!
Ahhhh...Mike and Ed drop their low E's to a D at the end of this tune. Ed's playing a guitar with no locking tremolo (Floyd Rose). Unchained must be the next song in the set. Ed's guitar goes out of tune often and he keeps tuning it while riffing thru this song. Early Kramer neck on this one. I think Frankenstein has an early Floyd Rose on it by 1982.
Van Halen is the only band that the singer can forget the 2nd verse every night and say "I forgot the fucking words again." and still pull off one of the greatest shows ever!
Let the concert begin,The kings of the stage, with a look-at-me, show-slealing, might-as-well-jump, larger-than-life image "Diamond Dave",with Guitar God and Fire Drummer the Van Halen Brothers,Great back vocals and bass player Michael Anthony,This trade mark well never go away,It well stay Forever.
When are some of you dumb assholes gonna realize that was part of Dave's stage act? How could he always forget the same lines from the same fucking song every fucking night on tour? USE YOUR BRAINS FOR ONCE.....
Roth was a brilliant at showmanship --- pretending to forget words implied that he was fucking high as a kite frome coke and booze --- and that only drove the kiddies more insane --- and therefore VH concerts always SOLD OUT every year
dave was notorius for fucking up the words in songs. He was almost always stoned on pot during all the shows and no one seemed to mind at all. Still rocked harder than any other band during that peroid.
gee, i wonder why eddie was pissed off? roth was a gyrating fool that forgot the words and yelped like a puppy. if only he had paid a little more attention to the music at the time.
I saw them 3 times with DLR...'80, '81 & '82....They opened with this song in '80 and they were great....this vid brings back memories....Dave forgot the words and no one cares....VH (not Van Hagar) Rules!!!
total freakin conquering!!!!!!! the dudes at 3:33 don't know what to make.
those were the dudes on the way out. a new empire was coming. just think motley crew was about to burst big, great scene and time. nowadays rock ain't rocking man!, what's next? rock's gotta look back and get a clue.
@1251wire Yeah, I know. It sickens me what my generation calls rock. Daughtry, Nickelback(well, they have a few good songs), The Fray, and the list goes on of all these "rock" bands that just write music to get on the VH1 top 20. There is still some great bands and a revival in glam. There's Steel Panther, Airbourne, Halestorm, etc.

Years later I did see Van Halen on the 1984 tour. Alot of great memories in that building ! Not in DC but LANDOVER MD !
"If Aliens came down and imposed a battle of the bands to determine the fate of the earth, I would feel confident putting early Van Halen foward as our champion".
You get a strong gut feeling that David Lee Roth and Eddie were smashed outta their minds on coke for this show.........but they still know how to bring it
@Hunkola Im surprised they didnt have hear attacks on stage from all the physical exertion they did while on coke. That shit aint good to do when ur heart is flying way faster than it should.
2:11 - Yeah, Dave, you fucked up the words again. Again. If it wasn't for you fucking up the words so much we'd have an early VH live album. Goddamit, Dave!
Ahhhh...the twang of that swamp ash body with fresh strings. Ed hates new strings coz of the twang. He refused to release this concert because he said the guitar wasn't "brown" enough and because Dave was a little too high on coke...but hey...weren't they all?.
@theShowStopper321 I thought it was a soft tone wood too. Swamp ash is hard and bright. But he used an old PAF ES335 pick-up to mellow it out..dipped in extra wax. The Ibanez he recorded VH 1 with was Korina wood (hawaii mahogany) The black charvelle w yellow stripes was alder. Ed rarely tells the truth...he keeps secrets and misleads us. boil the strings still in the paper envelope?
@Gordfozzfoster His Charvel was not swamp ash. It was made at a factory that also made baseball bats and furniture out of northern ash, which indeed is very bright and dense (heavy). Ed said his "Strat" weighed as much as a Les Paul, which means it's not swamp ash. Fender used swamp for the $25k Frankenstein guitar, which Ed actually said he liked the replica's sound better! Swamp Ash is a better tone wood. His frankie really didn't sound that great... it was Ed's fingers + the amps.
@Gordfozzfoster The Ibanez Destroyers actually not Korina wood, btw and I would venture to guess the black/yellow guitar was not Alder because Strats were mostly ash in the 70's and Charvel's supplier "Boogie Bodies" was an ash wood mill. Short of digging up the yellow/black guitar out of Dimebag's grave and analyzing it, there's not way to know for sure and it never actually made it onto a record, so we don't really know what it sounded like.
@DarthKazi Ya...I know the old flying v he had was korina wood...ed said his borrowed ibanez was a rare korina wood example too...but probably basswood or some soft asian tone wood. i don't think he recorded with the yellow and black vh2 cover gtr did he? the charvel? my older brother was van halen's live sound engineer for 10 yrs and then their tour manager.
@Gordfozzfoster He liked the look of "Bumblebee" but never could get the sound he wanted and the early Floyd without fine-tuners was a pain in the ass, hence why he didn't use one in the studio until Fair Warning until the tremolo was developed and worked right for him. The yellow/black came with a DiMarzio Super Distortion which Ed, at that time, hated. He put an AlNiCo magnet in it but it just didn't work out. It pretty much sat on his wall after the VHII tour until 2004.
@Gordfozzfoster He also didn't bring his main Marshall's out on the road after the VH1 tour so he was most likely running thru 2203s and he also had Laneys, Hiwatts, and Music Mans, but I know he had a few 2203s and 2204s on his live rig and this sounds more like a cranked Master Volume Marshall
@theShowStopper321 Jose Arondono modified Marshalls. Jose put a master volume in Ed's old Marshalls. Rumour has it...Ed used a Fender Super Champ or a Bassman 100 at times too. Jose was a latino tv repair man near Ed's house. Jose sold Ed the "Homite Voltage Regulator" dropping it down to 90 volts. Jose put an extra 12ax7 pre amp tube in and also Telefunken tone pots. That head resurfaced on Balance.
@Gordfozzfoster Really? That recent article out about the Dutch guy repairing his original Marshall, he said it was completely stock, besides basic maintenance work. He said he would have been able to tell if it had shit done to it and then changed back and as far as he could tell it didn't. I'm pretty sure Jose put buffers in his MXR pedals but I think Ed even said he made up the rumor to get Jose biz
@theShowStopper321 Ya...Ed used to turn his back on the crowd. Secrets. He told a few fibs to throw us off the trail. Boiling his strings? He recorded the solo to "Top of the World" on a 5150...that's it. Wall of 5150's on stage...Soldano under the stage.
Stop the nonsense of Hagar vs Roth. It's an old debate, been there done that...and let's face it, both era's of the band rocked in it's own way.. DLR years, the music was a little less "polished" and sounded a little more 'raw". With Sammy, the albums were more commercial sounding and that's the way Eddie was wanting to go. But live with Sammy..come on folks, they were a tight unit and sounded great, certainly better then most sh*t that was out there.
@nickthenail It was intentional nick the nail. I saw VH the 3rd show on the diver down tour and he did the same thing...just somrthing to get the crowd goin' ;cause we all raised hell when he did it!!!!!
Roth is great no dout about it...Hager kept the hits coming until we were forced all this crappy music we have now....Long live Rock in Roll... Bring all the old bands back
Ultimately, Hagar gave VanHalen extra credibility and i kind of like their albums. But for me, there is only one VanHalen. And that is with Diamond Dave no matter what others say. Their albums are all killers (except for Diver Dowen) and their live shows kicked fucking ass !
All you young bands...watch and learn, this is how you put on a show. Balls to the wall, kick your ass, as loud as you can. Play music that shows some TALENT, not weak riffs with " I miss you" lyrics. Where have all the guitar players gone?
Hey Hankola, why don't you go suck Roth's dick, Sammy Hagar is one of the best singers in history, hey actually had more sucess than Roth did, so stop disrespecting a god and go listen to some of Roths solo stuff and see how you feel about that
Hagar only sold 17 million albums in the US with VH. Classic VH sold 2.5 times what they did with Hagar. The original lineup was the band. Hagar is a singer, not a rock star.
ima rocker, i like Han Halen....not Van Hagar....Joe Dirt My sentiments exactly. saw SH 3 times before VHalen and loved him. Saw VH 1st 4 tours. Dave is the ultimate frontman! Yes, he is an asshole but everyone has faults
All you 18-25 year olds that cant get laid on a LONELY Sat night. Yes,Im talking to YOU!! Forget the Viagra!! Add a little Van Halen to your diet and.....OH LALA She will forget the KY,And love you for all you got. This comment not responsible for pre-mature ejaculation,Emo boys, obama supporters, and those who listen to the Jonas Brothers. The current heathcare will cut your penis off with too much Van Halen.....ORDER TODAY!!!!
blasty...first: Diamond Dave kicks ass. VH 1978-1984 would have never been what it was without Diamond Dave. A bit flambouyant and over the top...yes. But he was the FRONTMAN, PERIOD.
Sammy was much better with Montrose and on his own. The "Red Rocker", performed his concerts with his Red Trans AM on stage...kicked ass! They were just better seperate. Red Rocker...Heavey Metal, Fall In Love Again, Can't Derive 55. VH...too many too list, but they were all w/Diamond Dave.
You mullets think Dave is good live, open your fucking eyeballs, Sammy's sooooo much better, vocals and guitar, Dave is just a crackhead compared to Sammy!!!!
They cut out the best part of the song cause dave cant fucking remember the words....(feel my heart beat, feel my heart beat, feel my heart beat, feel my heart beat)
I was at the Toronto show 3 weeks after I rem it like it was yesterday. This opening Romeo fuck blew me away hearing EVH just killing the fret board and the sound fuck the sound it was like a 747 landing it was all amps and power in the 80's . But the sound was amazing !!
brilliant , this is when VH were the greatest band in the world , maybe the greatest live band of alltime Dave is brilliant , yes hes sings this better then anyone else , and at his prime he was the greatest vh singer , without a doubt the greatest frontman ever
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah!!! This is what rock and roll is ALL about. It was one big huge ass arena rock show on the stage and party in the seats! What I would give for this to be released professionally on DVD but we all know that won't ever happen.
What all you "Lyric Hounds" are not understanding is the fact that it's not as important about remembering lyrics as it is the "inflection" of what comes out. It's Van Halen man....(look up inflection)..Black singers are a perfect example of great inflection...
quit bitchin about stupid mics and shit just listen to the mighty van halen in their prime. I went to van halen concerts for the loudass music women exposing themselves and getting stupified drunk. van halen forever YEAHHHHHHH!
Its a set up..hello...he does it on purpose for the audience. Do you really think he "forgets" the lyrics every time on that song at the same point? I hope not
That's exactly right. It was the same thing every night on the '82-83 tour. Unless you went to multiple shows or were one of the very few people who were trading live VH recordings as the tour was going on, you wouldn't have known he was doing this at every show. The first time I heard the "I forgot the fucking words" in "Romeo" I thought it was hysterical. Same with "Don't stick your tongue out at me unless you intend to use it."
Man, that ROCKS!! and it's not just the loudness, there's something there that even a little youtube clip like this almost 30 yrs later still capture a bit...High Energy, and super ORGANIC at the same time, totally genuinely, ROARS~~~
damned straight, toneshun. was at this show and it was almost unbelievable. DLR was at the height of his powers (usual unenlightened morons bitching about lyrics notwithstanding), and had the audience wrapped up in the first 15 seconds, no shit. have not seen a stage presence beyond what flew out of the magic that night. top notch. didn't matter where your seats were. nuclear fission.
the "i can't drive 55" dodo bird cries in his beer when he hears diamond dave doing his thing, that rat puss.
vh fans are the most disrespected fans of all time. The VH brothers treat em like shit !! no box sets no concerts , nothing , gees they shd really have a look at themselves , n think about the fans 4 once . they never tour outside the usa , gees they toured aus with cherone , man never , dave , sammy toured . i luv themn but they treat fans like shit , ask any van halen fan
Wish VH would throw open the vaults..Warner began compliling material for a box set around the time the band left the label,AVH pleaded with them not to.
I NEVER went to a VH Classic line-up show, 3 of them, expecting a record perfect performance. THATS what the records were for; the live shows were for FUN!!! And they were.
Yes, indeed, Womack! VH shows in the heyday were EVENTS. The 1st time I saw them was at Anaheim Stadium in '78. Boston was the headliner and bored the crowd to tears with album-perfect renditions of their songs. VH blew them off the stage!
Look, I know Sammy has more million dollars than I do and probly has had more women in any given month at any VH tours than I've had last year but still, Sam is nothing but a hired DLR soundalike to keep the money machine going and the only reason they went mega platinum is because the band were already ultra huge. The stage was set and they just got poppier and commercialer.I don't hate Sam, he's just nothing art-wise vocal-wise stage-wise, etc but damn he's always looked 20 years too young
4 number 1 albums came after if thats what is called an amorphous abomination these days. not downing roth i love them each equally, two different bands, two different sounds.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what it makes for is pretentious jackasses who rehash the same cliches of "just 'cuz someone sells trillions of records doesn't make 'em good" Well, it don't make 'em bad either there Siskle.
If you care about being number 1, than 1984 would have been it except the greatest selling album of all-time kept it from achieving that. It's not Van Hagar, or Mach 3, its freakin' Van Halen! Get over it.
I like the natural sound, it's more original. Everything sounds "too" good and crisp in current music. For the album, yes, make it good. Live, keep it real!
My first concert was oct 8, 1982 (4 days before this video) Van Halen in Madison Square Garden. On This night, oct 12 I saw the Who and Clash in Shea Stadium. Pretty good week!
as nice a kid as Wolfie is, it just ain't the same. It's like the Jets without Namath. It's Liza singing new York, New york.

DarthKazi 1 year ago
@Gordfozzfoster The Ibanez Destroyers actually not Korina wood, btw and I would venture to guess the black/yellow guitar was not Alder because Strats were mostly ash in the 70's and Charvel's supplier "Boogie Bodies" was an ash wood mill. Short of digging up the yellow/black guitar out of Dimebag's grave and analyzing it, there's not way to know for sure and it never actually made it onto a record, so we don't really know what it sounded like.
DarthKazi 1 year ago
@DarthKazi Ya...I know the old flying v he had was korina wood...ed said his borrowed ibanez was a rare korina wood example too...but probably basswood or some soft asian tone wood. i don't think he recorded with the yellow and black vh2 cover gtr did he? the charvel? my older brother was van halen's live sound engineer for 10 yrs and then their tour manager.
Gordfozzfoster 1 year ago
@Gordfozzfoster He liked the look of "Bumblebee" but never could get the sound he wanted and the early Floyd without fine-tuners was a pain in the ass, hence why he didn't use one in the studio until Fair Warning until the tremolo was developed and worked right for him. The yellow/black came with a DiMarzio Super Distortion which Ed, at that time, hated. He put an AlNiCo magnet in it but it just didn't work out. It pretty much sat on his wall after the VHII tour until 2004.
DarthKazi 1 year ago
@Gordfozzfoster He also didn't bring his main Marshall's out on the road after the VH1 tour so he was most likely running thru 2203s and he also had Laneys, Hiwatts, and Music Mans, but I know he had a few 2203s and 2204s on his live rig and this sounds more like a cranked Master Volume Marshall
theShowStopper321 1 year ago
@theShowStopper321 Jose Arondono modified Marshalls. Jose put a master volume in Ed's old Marshalls. Rumour has it...Ed used a Fender Super Champ or a Bassman 100 at times too. Jose was a latino tv repair man near Ed's house. Jose sold Ed the "Homite Voltage Regulator" dropping it down to 90 volts. Jose put an extra 12ax7 pre amp tube in and also Telefunken tone pots. That head resurfaced on Balance.
Gordfozzfoster 1 year ago
@Gordfozzfoster Really? That recent article out about the Dutch guy repairing his original Marshall, he said it was completely stock, besides basic maintenance work. He said he would have been able to tell if it had shit done to it and then changed back and as far as he could tell it didn't. I'm pretty sure Jose put buffers in his MXR pedals but I think Ed even said he made up the rumor to get Jose biz
theShowStopper321 1 year ago

@Rockywaves73 your comment sucks ROTH RULES ALL THE WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HAGAR SUCK know the difference or go comment on journey's videos...

Almost every version of this song on YT from this era, Roth messes up the words...think it was intentional or a mental block?
nickthenail 1 year ago
@nickthenail It was intentional nick the nail. I saw VH the 3rd show on the diver down tour and he did the same thing...just somrthing to get the crowd goin' ;cause we all raised hell when he did it!!!!!
HeatherCostanzo010 1 year ago
@HeatherCostanzo010 Aaah, cool. BTW, I too caught them during their Diver Down tour....I just can't recall DLR doing that :)

Roth is great no dout about it...Hager kept the hits coming until we were forced all this crappy music we have now....Long live Rock in Roll... Bring all the old bands back
visual53 1 year ago
Ultimately, Hagar gave VanHalen extra credibility and i kind of like their albums. But for me, there is only one VanHalen. And that is with Diamond Dave no matter what others say. Their albums are all killers (except for Diver Dowen) and their live shows kicked fucking ass !
ajaxrules1975 1 year ago
All you young bands...watch and learn, this is how you put on a show. Balls to the wall, kick your ass, as loud as you can. Play music that shows some TALENT, not weak riffs with " I miss you" lyrics. Where have all the guitar players gone?
blite13 1 year ago
Hey Hankola, why don't you go suck Roth's dick, Sammy Hagar is one of the best singers in history, hey actually had more sucess than Roth did, so stop disrespecting a god and go listen to some of Roths solo stuff and see how you feel about that
brodypaul 1 year ago
@brodypaul,
Hagar only sold 17 million albums in the US with VH. Classic VH sold 2.5 times what they did with Hagar. The original lineup was the band. Hagar is a singer, not a rock star.

blasty...first: Diamond Dave kicks ass.
VH...too many too list, but they were all w/Diamond Dave.

brilliant , this is when VH were the greatest band in the world , maybe the greatest live band of alltime Dave is brilliant , yes hes sings this better then anyone else , and at his prime he was the greatest vh singer , without a doubt the greatest frontman ever

What all you "Lyric Hounds" are not understanding is the fact that it's not as important about remembering lyrics as it is the "inflection" of what comes out. It's Van Halen man....(look up inflection)..Black singers are a perfect example of great inflection...

The only way a phenomenon such as this happens is if the performer thinks the audience is less than a bug.
junbugkat 2 years ago
lol in like every old concert ive watched david lee roth always fucks up on the second verse
mothertrucker005 2 years ago
Its a set up..hello...he does it on purpose for the audience. Do you really think he "forgets" the lyrics every time on that song at the same point? I hope not
SplitHoof 2 years ago
That's exactly right. It was the same thing every night on the '82-83 tour. Unless you went to multiple shows or were one of the very few people who were trading live VH recordings as the tour was going on, you wouldn't have known he was doing this at every show. The first time I heard the "I forgot the fucking words" in "Romeo" I thought it was hysterical. Same with "Don't stick your tongue out at me unless you intend to use it."
loucap81 2 years ago
You think that if happened once, he's make sure to nail it the second time around. It was a gag for the audience, that's all. He knew the words.

toneshun 2 years ago 23
damned straight, toneshun. was at this show and it was almost unbelievable.

WomackPhotoKCMO 2 years ago 6
