2011 LA has a much more functional urban rail system with service to Koreatown, Hollywood and North Hollywood via the Metro Purple/Red lines, South Central, Compton and Long Beach by the Blue Line, Redondo Beach El Segundo South Central, Hawthorne, Lynwood and Norwalk via the Green Line and East LA Boyle Heights and Pasadena via the Gold Line. The Expo Line will serve USC, parts of South Central and Culver City very soon on its way to Santa Monica Pier in a few years
1994: Metro Blue Line 7/Metro to Long Beach,Metro Red Line Union Station to MacArthur Park(construction ongoing on branches to Western Av and Hollywood/NoHo that would open by the dawn of the millenium) Plus the Green Line in the 105 freeway was nearly complete and open the next year. Also Metrolink operated the San Bernadino, Ventura, Riverside and Santa Clarita Lines at the time of the quake(the latter was extended by the Army Corps of Engineers due to quake to Lancaster)
Damn LAs rail network is far better in 2011 than it was in 1994 although the metrorail and metrolink systems already existed back then(they were in their infancy). The antelope valley line i think was extended in an emergency move to aid in moving antelope valley commuters who had no other way to LA and over the next decade became a more permanent fixture of the regional transit system. Still freeways reign and the rail system still underserves many areas
@ljpop95 By 1994, LA had an extensive rail system as a matter of fact. They two light rail lines, a multi-line commuter rail (Metrolink) and a heavy rail subway well underway. It just seems that those anchors were oblivious to them because they didn't meet their expectations.

@GoldenAurelius lol maybe you're right, I hope not, because about 20 days before the earthquake in Chile a guy in popular Chilean forum predicted the earthquake and nobody beleived him
@GoldenAurelius I remember 2 days before the japan earthquake I had a dream of an earthquake. I also had a feeling that there was gonna be an earthquake on Easter Sunday of 2010. Its weird how we dream and think about earthquakes before they hit. I've had many dreams and feelings before it happens.
@GoldenAurelius OH THE HUMANITY! NOT A DREAM!! surely everyone must flee the entire bay area because you had a dream of a ruined frisco!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
similarly, i had a dream that the stay puft marshmallow man from ghostbusters attacked new york... AGAIN! sure he was much nicer this time around but you can imagine how chaotically clumsy he was given his size. he also had bad flatulence which, although not his fault, caused great discomfort to very many people..
we just had a 6.9 in Chile, and it's not acceptable that a freeway fall with a under 7.5 earthquake... we had a 8.8 earthquake last year and the onfly ones that fell was the most old bridges on the whole motorway system, California needs to have a higher standar in anti-earthquake construction
@felolinux remember, this was 1994, and los angeles has hundreds of miles of freeways, i'm surprised more bridges didn't collapse. also, they really updated the building codes so the freeways wont collapse again. but who knows, mother nature always finds a way to get the upper hand, i mean japan has really advanced construction right? look what happened in 1995, their freeway that collapsed was supposed to withstand an 8.1, but a 6.8 took it down cause the ground acceleration was immense
@felolinux if you saw the date of the video you would notice it was four years ago and we have made alot of changes to our retrofitting of our bridges and freeways since then. It also depends on the type of earth quake. and how the waves hit.
@felolinux you are right, especially when it's an epicenter of earthquakes. but us government would rather spent their money in Iraq and Afghanistan doing god know what!
@felolinux Actually, we do, but you fail to take into account the depth of the earthquake, the type of shaking, and the type of faultline the earthquake happened on and what type of ground the epicenter is situated on. All of those play a part in the severity of the damage done. Out of all the freeway overpasses we have (one every mile or so) only FOUR overpasses fell...NOT freeways. Please don't make ignorant statements if you don't know the full details.
@felolinux I agree! I mean, I am not sure if Chile is a developing country anymore because it is in fact quite advanced, but compared to USA it is still poorer financially, yet your infrastructure is better. This is a huge shame for USA, as the richest country in the world, to have a less developed infrastructure than an emerging south american country! Los Angeles is a world city also, a center of global commerce and culture and it has a third world transportation system!!!
@felolinux This was back in the 90's when they still didn't have much knowledge of "anit-earthquake" engineering, not to mention when the freeways were built. Probably in the 50's or longer. Now i assure you that if a 11.0 hit, those freeways will not crack.
@felolinux Coming from someone who lives in a 2nd world country with a FAR lower FREQUENCY of earthquakes and far fewer 'big ones' than we, I can only take your rant as that of a misinformed and uppity, outsider. CHECK your FACTS. When Chile next gets an earthquake of any kind, I will be sure to comment on your inability to take care of your own and ask for our aide and money. You are a moron, and insensitive- usually when I see a disaster I don’t use it as a xenophobic platform. Douche.
@orsetto81utube if you think that I'm a douche... well it's ok that's what you think, by the way we had a 5.5 a week ago ant this week the 6th region had a 6.2, and if you see any xenophobic message from me... you need some help, I just said "California needs to have a higher standar in anti-earthquake construction" if that's not true, sorry, but we all need to be prepared, and California wasn't ready

In photos of motor home and semi, I was in the motor home by myself driving to Arizona when it hit at 4:31am the earthquake was running from in back of me, it felt like you take a blanket, hold it at each end and toss you in the air, it went up then bounced back left to front right before it righted itself, I thought it was going to roll over, photo only shows after it was moved to the sturdy supports, initially was at the other end & highway gone right in front of us, I was about 25' from end.

On that Day will men proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done). Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it. Quran
Man I'd forgotten what it looked like. My sister and brother-in-law lived only a few exits down from where one of the freeways collapsed. Of all the earthquakes I've experienced this was the most unsettling.
This was the biggest earthquake i ever felt i heard it coming a big rumble as if a 18 wheeler would rumble and then a non stop of shaking i could not walk down the stairs easily It was about 4:30 in th morning still dark and all you heard was explosions and car alarms followed by non stop after shocks i lived in panorama city about 5 miles from northridge epacenter! i was 11 years old!

Tydens 'n fees op 15 Junie, 1896,' n aardbewing aan die kus van Sanriku, Japan na raming 8,5 grootte op die Richer Skaal word
@hendogg304 I think all of us who lived through that would never forget that night. I was also 10 years old living in woodland hills when the 94 hit. I was thrown off my bed and my TV fell down 5 inches from my head and I was trapped in my room. My dad cut up his legs pretty bad trying to get us out. i remember when the aftershock hit like 30 sec later ... that felt bigger than the first one and we just barely made it running out of the house. We slept on the streets for 3 days.
@thecastman97 it sounds like fun but r u ready?because theres no warning and it can catch you when u might be in a underground parking lot or a store and you can get crushed or how about your love ones might get hurt its really not that fun.but i can say we are overdue!!!
@hendogg304 if i saw shit was getting serious with an earthquake i would either A run out into a wide open area B hide under something hard like a desk or C hold a doorway.. wen you live in LA they teach you this stuff.. the whole fun of it is it catching you off guard :))
I am looking for a mechanical engineer and a doctor to join our "Colony" for only $5,000 you get to be part of the colony and 1/2 acre with water to live on. In Santa Barbara CA> close to town, with water on 100 acres surrounded by BLM land on all three sides. Mechanic, architect, nurse, builder, handyman, beautiful women(plurel), computer engineer, scientist, horticulturists, farmers, musicians, people with resources, welder, solar engineer, natural healer, medicine men, historian, NO BANKERS!
I grew up in Southern California and earthquakes always excited me as a child. I now have lived in Las Vegas NV for over 15 years and we don't ever have earthquakes that matter. Then again, we don't have any rain or really cold weather lately either.
Dont blame anything! It's part of life...Its natural! That's why they call natural disasters! You just can expect life not to have thing's like this!! Just forget about it you can't do anything just die or be lucky to survive...:)
Besides happening so early in the morning.....it happened on Martin Luther King's birthday so there wouldnt have been massive commuting that day anyways. Most of southern Calif had the day off from work. Luckily, that is why there weren't massive casualties. The final measure was 6.7
@Drazhenko They could but they would have to reroute the train tracks. While I was stuck in the 4 hour crawl home I would look at all of the possible routs that would keep every thing close to the ground and that is what I came up with. The next quake that hits that area will bring the same bridges down again guaranteed. A 5.0 aftershock hit while I was stuck in traffic trying to get through the mess and the ground was undulating up and down in 8' waves. So where the pylons.
did any one die or what???

@felolinux if you saw the date of the video you would notice it was four years ago and we have made alot of changes to our retrofitting of our bridges and freeways since then. It also depends on the type of earth quake. and how the waves hit.
BethRosePizana 10 months ago
@felolinux you are right, especially when it's an epicenter of earthquakes. but us government would rather spent their money in Iraq and Afghanistan doing god know what!
virtual7insanity 10 months ago
@felolinux were your bridges that long?
dereileak 10 months ago
@dereileak near my city there is one that is almost half a mile long and about 70 meters high and it had no problems at all
felolinux 9 months ago
@felolinux Actually, we do, but you fail to take into account the depth of the earthquake, the type of shaking, and the type of faultline the earthquake happened on and what type of ground the epicenter is situated on. All of those play a part in the severity of the damage done. Out of all the freeway overpasses we have (one every mile or so) only FOUR overpasses fell...NOT freeways. Please don't make ignorant statements if you don't know the full details.

@felolinux we do but we have no money. caltrans wont do shit without money. those jerks
chillaxer1993 8 months ago
@felolinux I agree! I mean, I am not sure if Chile is a developing country anymore because it is in fact quite advanced, but compared to USA it is still poorer financially, yet your infrastructure is better. This is a huge shame for USA, as the richest country in the world, to have a less developed infrastructure than an emerging south american country! Los Angeles is a world city also, a center of global commerce and culture and it has a third world transportation system!!!
zeragito 7 months ago
@felolinux This was back in the 90's when they still didn't have much knowledge of "anit-earthquake" engineering, not to mention when the freeways were built. Probably in the 50's or longer. Now i assure you that if a 11.0 hit, those freeways will not crack.
berny88925 6 months ago
@felolinux Coming from someone who lives in a 2nd world country with a FAR lower FREQUENCY of earthquakes and far fewer 'big ones' than we, I can only take your rant as that of a misinformed and uppity, outsider. CHECK your FACTS. When Chile next gets an earthquake of any kind, I will be sure to comment on your inability to take care of your own and ask for our aide and money. You are a moron, and insensitive- usually when I see a disaster I don’t use it as a xenophobic platform. Douche.
orsetto81utube 3 months ago
@orsetto81utube if you think that I'm a douche... well it's ok that's what you think, by the way we had a 5.5 a week ago ant this week the 6th region had a 6.2, and if you see any xenophobic message from me... you need some help, I just said "California needs to have a higher standar in anti-earthquake construction" if that's not true, sorry, but we all need to be prepared, and California wasn't ready

Repent, Pray! God Bless you.

@anthony8151 It was 6.7 but only 10 miles deep, which isn't counted on the Richter scare. So, actually it was much, much stronger than a 6.7.

When the earth is shaken to her (utmost) convulsion, And the earth throws up her burdens (from within), And man cries (distressed): 'What is the matter with her?'- On that Day will she declare her tidings: For that thy Lord will have given her inspiration. On that Day will men proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done). Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it. Quran

@hendogg304 if i saw shit was getting serious with an earthquake i would either A run out into a wide open area B hide under something hard like a desk or C hold a doorway.. wen you live in LA they teach you this stuff.. the whole fun of it is it catching you off guard :))

Besides happening so early in the morning.....it happened on Martin Luther King's birthday so there wouldnt have been massive commuting that day anyways. Most of southern Calif had the day off from work. Luckily, that is why there weren't massive casualties. The final measure was 6.7

What can I say
I wish everybody was smart as you Drazhenko...but sadly they are not
Drazhenko 1 year ago
@Drazhenko They could but they would have to reroute the train tracks. While I was stuck in the 4 hour crawl home I would look at all of the possible routs that would keep every thing close to the ground and that is what I came up with. The next quake that hits that area will bring the same bridges down again guaranteed. A 5.0 aftershock hit while I was stuck in traffic trying to get through the mess and the ground was undulating up and down in 8' waves. So where the pylons.
