actually rem has a similar case to crona, well in one subtitled version and the live action movies rem is in fact a boy as for the manga, dub and another subtitled version rem is a girl, as for rem helping misa its because of a promise he made to jealous (the shinigami that saved misa) to keep misa safe. hope that helped the people who were confused :)

I loved Rem. I cried when she died.

And to throw salt in the wounds, everyone cried about L and didn't give Rem any acknowledgement. Fanbase or anime. Which I think is sad, because look at her dedication to Misa.

Shimigami or not, I firmly believe Rem has the best, let alone most morals. Rem acts more human than anyone in Death Note. Just look at how corrupted Light was.

@Buscandotreguas Actually I think some characters refer to Rem as 'her' or 'she' in the anime, Rem also has a female voice in the English dubbed version but I can't be sure... In the manga Rem is female, although she falls in love with Misa, nothing wrong with that, it could be in a family way or it might not, but it might have been done like this to throw us off track.

If you've ever seen 'Soul Eater' they do the same with Crona, it's so the audience can determine the gender for ourselves :3

And I don't wanna believe they're a girl, 'cause I dunno, something about them and Misa's relationship just didn't seem like that kind of relationship...

I mostly cried when they died though because no one cared or knew that "she" died. And Misa, well she's stupid, so of course she didn't care.

But really... I miss Rem... No one in the show might, but I do.

I can already tell you, Rem didn't love Misa like a spouse. It was almost sisterly or motherly love. Rem knew everything that had happened to Misa, and she knew she couldn't change it. She just wanted to be there for her. I've felt the same way towards my sister. I personally can't limit Rem to romantic love.
