  • centerline pride

  • beautiful landing

  • Nice! As you know one of the hardest airports to land at...Thank you!

  • should the pilot be holding a camera while landing? isnt that like 10,000 times worse than texting and driving? lol

  • "Retard, Retard" That aircraft is an asshole.

  • this is a car u fuckin twat !!

    r u lyin to us ?

  • How far out do you usually join the Localizer for 27?

I used to live 30 miles East of KSAN in Alpine and sometimes i'd hear the whooshing sound of them dropping the landing gear.

  • ALASKA AIRLINES is the best you should all fly the best airline ever you all should try it if u already haven't

  • @alaskaairflyer737 This airline has been cited by the FAA many times for poor maintenance and more then a few of there airplanes had problems in flight. Am I correct? I believe that I am.

  • @CaptainArt777 alaska airlines is a very good airline they always work on their planes thats why the military uses them because they are reliable and every time i fly them they always check the planes the one that has problems is southwest and they have ALOT of problems alaska airlines hasn't had one in a long time

  • @alaskaairflyer737 Sir, please understand that this is not me saying this. I have read this in flying mag. years ago. Maybe they clean up their act. I been around flying and held my lic. for over 40y and I have heard this said more then a few times. I believe that you are fighting and up hill battle trying to convince the older pilots of this since they may have heard of this also. I did not just pick this out of the air. Lets hope they are now. I have flown to Anchorage and landed behind one.

  • @CaptainArt777 No, you are incorrect. The last major issue with Alaska was an MD-80 being hit by ground machinery and the driver tried to conceal the matter by not reporting it. I fly Alaska/Horizon exclusively and have never, ever encountered an issue or heard of one. I believe you are reacting about Ryanair?

  • @SenorSpode I think CaptainArt might be referring to Alaska's financial crisis in the late 90's, which made them cut their maintenance program way back. That led to the in-flight failure of the stabilizer jack screw on Alaska Airlines flight 261, which lost control and crashed in Jan, 2000. They were really marred by that scandal since they were cutting so many corners on their jets at the time to save money. Hopefully things have improved.

  • @gobo760 Things did improve; Alaska's jet fleet is now all-Boeing, having retired their last MD-80-series jet in 2008. All commercial jets of the T-tail, rear-engine type had various problems of one sort or another with horizontal stabilizers. One of the earliest problems was many prototypes of said type of plane having deep-stall characteristics related to the t-tail stabilizer.

  • Nice video that's weird retard the engines that's akward

  • Was thus US Airways, if so, was it from Philadelphia?

  • Why are the Piano Keys so far away? Because of the Buildings?

  • @mazak yes the piano keys are far away because of the buildings, as well as the hill, and so it forces airplanes to land further down the runway and so, come in higher over the hill and buildings.

  • I can't believe that the FAA allowed that parking garage to be built just left of center about 1/4 mile from threshold.

  • what airline?

  • *Sigh*.... MCRD. Your thrust reversers just made some J-Hat yell "AS YOU WERE!"

  • what does it mean when the recording says retard

  • @Iluvbadgers it means idle the engines basically

  • is it me or is this plane Really FAST?????

  • @anona72 it's you.

  • So cool video!!!!, so it's an A321, from which airline?... thnx for the video, so cool!!!

  • RETARD.....why cant it be more polite and just say " AUTISTIC AUTISTIC AUTISTIC" ???

  • @TheCharger895 same thing and thats not nice and it doesnt say retard its recharge

  • @MyPilot747 @TheCharger895

The FMA system in Airbus calls out "Retard Retard" to tell the pilots to retard the throttles. The original meaning of the word Retard is to "delay, or slow down, the rate." In this case, it is to slow down the throttles during the flare. There's 2 reasons for it: 1) so the plane doesn't start climbing during the flare, and more importantly 2) so the spoilers auto deploy during touchdown to cancel out lift.

Only Airbus announces this, not Boeing.

  • hey captaindauntless.. i just found out that this airport its considered as an extreme one, why is that?.. no mountains behind nor in front of it, short runway?.. air traffic perhaps?

  • @lizzieqr SAN is considered a difficult approach because of the combination of the steep descent on approach (there are hills leading up to Balboa Park right off the end of runway 27, which is the typical direction) and relatively short landing strip. I'm not a pilot, but I am from San Diego, so I have been in and out of SAN quite a bit. During rain, the pilots reverse-thrust *hard* after touchdown to get the speed off as quickly as possible. It's always rougher.

  • lol thats a us.airways plane

  • See the parking deck at 0:25- 0:30? I WOULD FUCKING KILL FOR A VIEW LIKE THAT.... KILL. 8|

  • @superhot340

I have been on that parking deck - amazing view, will never forget that!

  • @KevinBasher lucky...

  • wow, thanks for the view! san diego has the awesome parking garage that seems to almost get clipped by planes before they hit the runway, so cool to stand on the top level and almost reach out and touch em

  • This was on the history channel. In the show 10 of the world's most extreme airports. Does anybody know why this would be #10?

  • @OleMartyMar the landing, you come over the hills on downtown to land. that parking garage is kinda hard to land with in the way

  • @OleMartyMar Got to do with air-traffic and a moderately short runway....

  • LOL RETARD

  • very,very nice!

  • a320?

  • what airline?

  • I know what airline this, they are the only ones that fly A321's out of SAN.

  • Comment removed

  • Love cockpit view landings, great video, thanks for the upload.

  • sandiego airport is awesome

  • straight from a frickin dictionary. retard means " To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede". I.E. set throttles to idle. It was funny the first 2 times I heard the airbus say "retard" when I was 10 but now it's old.

  • ha thats kinda funny how airbus says "retard." its just airbuses way to prove that machines are smarter than us, what an insult. I know retard means flare, but then again why didn't airbus just hav the computer programmed to say flare??

  • OOPS!! My mistake on the meaning of "Retard". Airbus aircraft are the only ones with this call out.

  • Airbus aircraft have the "retard retard" command on the altitude call out. Boeing does not. Retard means to flare or pull the nose up.

  • Comment removed

  • Retard , means to set throttles to idle thrust.

  • it looks like a 737

  • @michaelbobe1

    its retard,retard.

if im right,i think it the command to cath the plane for a smoother landing aka pulling back.

  • great video, thank you!

  • To all you pilots, congratulations. You have the best job in the world. I always dreamed of being a pilot since I was a kid, or at least as an airline or airport technician or whatever. I guess it was never meant to be. And go Chargers.

  • I am one but I can tell you it's not perfect. I have a wife and a child and miss them alot ;). And flying at night al the time is killing me, the same for flying on xmass etc.

  • Yea I can imagine how hard that must be, I've been told that the job itself is great but that the industry can be brutal. Nothing is perfect I guess.

  • @MrUltraTJ Buy FSX!

  • Your clearly a US East pilot. What crew base?

  • awesome vid. not the fsx stuff. really cool

  • what is heaviest aircraft can land there=?

  • I think the largest aircraft is 767 Hawaiian, daily to PHNL.

  • 747 can. UPS use MD-11s.

  • A 747 actually can, however I don't believe any actually fly scheduled flights to SAN at the moment.

  • What plane is this??????

  • says in the info.

    Airbus A321.

  • It's an Airbus A321 I believe. I'm a Jake Peavy fan too btw lol.

  • It's Saying Recharge ithink lol

  • Believe it or not, it's actually saying "retard", which means that the engines have gone to idle because of the powerdown they do just before touchdown.

  • Its actually telling the pilots when to idle the thrust.

  • Thanks :)

  • This Plane's Like Zoooommmm

  • what'd he do? open the cockpit window @ 00:58?

  • Why there is a parking structure near the approach end of the runway of the San Diego airport is beyond me. The city should tear that parking structure down.

  • i think they did lower it one level at some point. you USED to be able to actually go up to the top of the karking building and watch the planes fly right over your head. I mean right over your head !! it was the scariest most awesome thing ever (they dont let anybody really go up there anymore now though ;(

  • Your airplane has a French accent and calls you a retard when your busy trying to land. Typical French! American aircraft are much more polite.

  • first off, this is an airbus, that means that it was made in France...second, when the plane says "retard," that means that engines are going to idle position (no power), he's not the retard, you are

  • First off, of course it is you crass dimwit. Second, anyone, even a fanboy like yourself, knows that's what the airplane is saying. Third, you take yourself far far to seriously. If you can't understand the humor in having 'retard!' blared at you while on final over a major urban area, .... Then I think you might need to watch more Mel Brooks movies or something. May I suggest "History of the World Pt 1" as a first lesson in how revrent subjects can almost always have irreverent bent.

  • well, then why did u make those stupid comments

  • Because you still don't get what I'm saying. YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR. Let me be frank, even though that's not my name. Flying is the second most intense thing a pilot does, the most intense part of a pilot's job is landing. Having your airplane scream 'Retard!' to an English speaking pilot harkens back to his student days when his instructor is gently (Or not so gently) chiding "Get on center!, use your rudders!". But like I said, you obviously have problems taking yourself too seriously.

  • @TalksWithDirt Jesus! What are Americans like!!!

  • ever heard of this thing they invented called a 'joke'? you should really look it up. you might like them

  • @TalksWithDirt Its an English accent actually, typical Americans

  • @Flyglobespan93 Are you sure it's not speaking the Queen's English in a French accent? Typical Brits! :) No really, that recordings R's and ahh's sound more French to me than British. You're a native, I'll take your word as final, I am curious. If it is a English accent, which region?

  • @TalksWithDirt Ok after listening to it im positive its English

  • @Flyglobespan93 Then corrected I stand. Thanks!

  • @TalksWithDirt thats fucking awesom! nice one.

  • @TalksWithDirt Lol good one.

  • @TalksWithDirt

It's part German as well, so you wouldn't want to be talking back to it as its orders must be obeyed AT ANY TIME!

On the other hand an American plane would be more polite but "accidentally" shoot you 300 times with an automatic rifle ;)

  • @TalksWithDirt its a airbus only and it reminds you to but the throttle in idle since they are not connected physically connected to the engines like throttle cables are.

  • yah thats what i was thinking. i havent seen any other a321 in san diego other than us airways :o

  • US Airways A321 for sure.

  • "Retard! Retard!" callout is 20 feet ATDZE meaning pull back throttle. The reason it got this name is in the old days, some airbus pilots were so stupid that they forgot to pull back the throttle at 20 feet so they added that to the GPWS call outs.

I know this because I used to fly the A320 for United Airlines. Now I fly the 767's.

  • Dear Captain...whose idea was it to build a parking structure at the end of the runway?

  • are airport is so small compared to other citys

  • You can tell it's an Airbus: Airbus engineers love to call pilots retards at the end of every flight, whereas Boeing respects pilots.

  • hahaha lol XD

  • No they dont call themm retards its a gpws callout for the piolts to idle engines silly :D

  • did u open the window or something at the end???

  • Very nice video

  • 40 feet low... not bad, but low all the same

  • Is the system saying "retard" are 0:41? LOL

  • It means literally, "Engines to Idle"

  • Interesting....thanks!

  • You are very welcome.

  • you are one for not knowing this :D just kidding :)

  • LOL! good one :)

  • ....its teh landing system telling to cut back engines

  • There's good ole' MCRD off to the right...

  • San Diego's Lindberg Field makes me nervous.

It's the worst airport to take off from. They have to take of pretty steep, because the residents in the Point Loma area don't like the noise.

It's the worst airport to land in, because of the buildings in the way. They have to drop in at the end.

Not to mention the runway itself is relatively short.

  • no1 has died here asshole

  • faroolabjalmak

  • Sorry I hit the "post comment" button to fast...faroolabjalmak...learn how to spell, jesus and....get off of youtube you damn idiot.

  • PSA 182 is the only real crash in san diego that has killed. An F-18 crashed awhile ago but thats really it. there have been no deaths related the the runway at san diego. the airport is fine but people complain about the buildings and mountains. deal with it. its the only real place that people like for an airport now.

  • Nice placement of the car park building.

  • hahaha. The plane almost hit it .

  • This is the world´s most interesting and demanding approach and landing, after Hong Kong Kai Tak airport, now a good old memory. Great video, I love aviation and San Diego is one of my favourite airports.

  • So this is what San Diego looks like from the cockpit...I always get the port or starboard view! Awesome..thanks for sharing.

  • Hey I hope you weren't flying and filming at the same time! Nice landing, I just flew into San Diego for the first time last weekend, awesome looking approach from a passenger's perspective

  • The noise is the engines going into reverse. You can hear me talking on the radio in the background. It does come on louder in the video than what is normal for the cockpit sounds.

  • On 0:58, what's that noise? The pilot opened a window?

  • Sorry It is 9401 FtX200 ft

  • the runway in san diego isnt that big

  • 9700

  • now its sounds big! but looking at it in this angle it makes it look small

  • You should try landing on an Aircraft Carrier!! Talk about small!!

  • Isn't it around 7500 ft when using the displaced threshold?

  • That is the only runway in San Diego!!

  • mr pilot guy would u rathe be flyinga a boeing or an airbus plz answer

  • lol! Mr. pilot guy!

  • this vids owner is such a freaking jerk

he wont even respond to my comment

  • I'm sorry but I just found your question. I do travel alot and don't have a lot of time for the internet. Would you like a shot of another airport??

  • im just kidding and i understand

and i would like a shot of another airport and thank you for your time

  • I would rather be flying the good old DC-9!!

  • awsome vid. Do more lik this one.

  • I will shoot you some more!

  • Thanks CaptainDauntless for the share. Nice approach - beautiful view of San Diego.

  • ops my bad didnt read about the video ;)

  • looks like JetBlue to me

  • JetBlue doesn't fly A321, USairways does however :-)

  • what airline--

    Virgin?

  • love how airbus goes "retard, retard" before TD.

  • Amazing video..

  • one question what is the airseep in the aproxch?

  • looks like 140kts.

  • Based on?

    Gotta love youtube armchairing.

  • the standard flaps 4 landing setting for an A320 is around 140 kts.

  • In the Airbus 321 we come in at about 160Knots.

  • that is cool i liked
