@Ryandcreations We haven't tested with Unity 3.5 yet as we are not yet running it internally, as it is still in beta. Which version are you using? What kind of problem did you experience. The tool does work correctly in Unity Free, in that it procedurally creates a river mesh – which was the purpose of this tool. It's the example shaders which aren't supported, as Unity Free does not allow reflective or refractive shaders. You simply need to swap in a shader which is supported.
@SixTimesNothing I am using the latest indie version (3.4.2) and everything installs fine etc, but hitting "R" for river and hitting "P" for the path one both do not work.
@Ryandcreations I've just tested in Pro 3.4.2 and it works. I will have to install Free on another computer to test that. Are you on Mac or PC? Also – have you used the tool in earlier versions before without problems? Is it just the latest version that won't work for you?
@Ryandcreations I'm not sure what the problem could be. I can't seem to see a problem in either version. Make sure you are following the instructions correctly, ensure that you always give the scene window focus (right click) when you add a node and so on.
@xDutchZomBieHD Unity Free won't give you reflection or refraction. The best you can do would be an animated tileable texture - maybe with a small amount of transparency that would allow the river bed to be seen through the water.
@Rubentje96 You can find this discussed in the comments below. I'm guessing you're using Unity Free, which does not support reflection or refraction. If this is the case, simply swap the material for something else that is supported in Unity Free.
PLEASE READ: It's come to our notice that a few users are having trouble placing nodes by pressing the 'r' button. It is necessary to give the scene view focus before the Unity editor will detect the key press. The simplest way to do this is by RIGHT CLICKING inside the SCENE VIEW. Right clicking means that another GameObject won't be selected when you click. This is due to a limitation of the Unity Editor. We know that this additional step is annoying and plan to change it in future. Thanks!
@2010MConnolly You are probably using Unity Free I'm guessing? You need to replace the river material with something that is supported in the non-Pro version. There should be a UV animation script on the Unify wiki.
@SixTimesNothing Yeah im using unity free and pretty new too it. I do coding myself, just dont understand this though! I'll have a look. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
"This shader requires Unity Pro - if you are receiving an error that "No subshaders can run on this card", or if this shader is pink and doesn't present slots for the textures and properties, you will need to use a different shader that is compatible with your version of Unity."
This would have been nice front-loaded information, and supports the claim made by some posters of not being fully "Indie-Support" compatable.
@thespiritcoyote The tool is aimed at providing the ability to create rivers in Unity – which it does in both the Pro and Free versions. It is assumed knowledge that reflective and refractive shaders will not work in Unity Free. That said – we can look into providing a second shader for Unity Free users. You are able to use any Free-compatible shader with the river system though and things like UV animation don't require Pro.
Overall the tool is a timesaver and a convenience, I would recomend it!!!
but with cautions not yet articulated well in any review I have seen...
- It did take three days of attempting to place a node before the GUI and User could agree on compatability, the "R" button issue is tricky and did not function smoothly, but did function eventually...
- the "basic package" does not make exactly what is shown... not all can be assume'd to know why.
@thespiritcoyote Fair comments. But I think what people tend to forget is that this and the Path tool are freebies – in fact given the support we offer users, they actually cost us money. Both tools were initially created for our own use and we later decided to make them freely available to other Unity users. I know that the R/P button thing is a pain in the ass, and I hope we will redo both packages at some point. Problem is - that requires time and resources that we don't currently have.
@SixTimesNothing, I make the assumtion (based on experiance) that coding is a chore, and worth at least a hot-pizza and a cold six-pack of choice, and quite definitely some time-off... with luck it becomes a fun chore... like composing music, writing a novel, or raising a barn...
After all, art and work are simply two manifestations of an essential human trait: creativity.
Creativity uses; effort, dedication, and skill – to turn; time, materials, and ideas into something.
@thespiritcoyote Well said. It's not so much about it being a chore for us though, just a question of priorities to our clients and internal projects vs. developing free tools. I think it is important for us to improve these tools – there are just a lot of things that are more pressing right now. We will get around to updating them eventually, just not in the immediate future.
It is my understanding that reflective and refractive shaders have found "work-arounds" by some talented individuals, however; Unity (Pro & Indie) can be attributed as targeted to a public that should not be expected to be quite that savy, at the outset, with the idea that investment in early talent benifits all parties over the long term.
A valid assumption made thus - the tendancey is to support Unity(Indie) in publicly free packages, and offer Pro versions expressly labeled for final devs...
My Supporting Words; Again, even without /immediate/ functionality as a RiverTool, I did manage to create a very nice and appropriately appearing canyon across a desert terrain, that benifited much by that little extra tweak... and would recomend even this basic fuctionality for it's convenience... (when the "r" button cooperates) ... and look forward to seeing any further developments that could aid game-dev education, indie-programers, and lower-level projects.
I am working with the Rivertool you guys developed and it looks great. My one problem is that I do not have Unity pro so I am not sure if I can get the textures to work or what texture I should be using for the material under mesh renderer. Any help would be much appreciated!
@xDutchZomBieHD As much as I don't really appreciate the abusive tone, I'm happy to help if you're seriously having an issue. I just tested in Unity 3.4.0f5 (Pro) and was able to create a river without any issues. What is actually going wrong? Perhaps if you describe the problem rather than swearing I could be more helpful. The only thing that won't work in Pro is the shader, btw.
@SixTimesNothing Sorry , was just really pissed off at the time. The Road AND the rivertool both do not work.
I Use Unity 3.4( Free) I Can add path nodes , i see the path shape , and then i select texture prototype. The Texture prototype doesn't appear and i used sand for it ( my forth in the terrain textures , first one is 0.) I Click ''wear'' and slide it to the max. I Only see the shape of the path , the material doesn't appear on it. Any suggestions? I really need paths!
@xDutchZomBieHD Is this the River or Path tool? I followed your steps with the river tool and was able to set the fourth terrain texture and see it applied to the river bed. I also tested with the Path tool (in path not road mode with wear on full and non uniform texture) – I didn't have any problems. The only thing I can't do immediately is test in Unity Free as I'm on Pro, but I can look into that. I'll PM you with an email address you can use to contact us further.
@SixTimesNothing I'm talking about the Road/path tool here. My rivertool does kindly the same , i add the material on it , but the river colour changes to pink somehow...
@xDutchZomBieHD If it's pink – it means that either the shader is using something that isn't supported by your graphics card, or that the shader is using a feature such as reflection or refraction that isn't supported in Unity Free. You will need to use a simpler water texture, but you can still use a UV animation script to get the river to flow.
@SixTimesNothing Alright , but do you know what shaders unity free supopports?
O VERY IMPORTANT : In the Road/path tool , I Click finalize path. When i click on the path on my terrain i look at the path script , and at the same table i see smooth path widht. Beneath dear it says ''Mesh'' And than next to mesh it says ''No mesh'' could this be my problem?
I Can make a video response to show you my problem. Maybe it's easier for you to help me that way.
@xDutchZomBieHD Unity Free supports all of the built in shaders, these are the same as when you create your own material. There's mire information about this in the Unity docs. It's REALLY a lot better if you use the feedback/support link in the video description, not the YouTube comments or a video response. It makes it much easer for us to resolve issues. Thanks.
@SixTimesNothing Hmm , perhaps you could download free from Unity3d.com , and sign up with a different email adress? Maybe that works and you can check if the River , and road/path tool work in free?
@xDutchZomBieHD I'm going to run a test on Unity Free on an older machine this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes and get back to you. We did test these tools previously on Unity Free and as far as I know, it's just the shaders which are not supported.
@Worldwar64 Please submit a detailed description of the problem you are experiencing to our support site. The link is in the video description. The lead developer on this tool will be able to help you further.
@Worldwar64 Can you explain your issue in more detail? There is no such thing as Mac/Windows scripting in Unity, it's the just one language (though you can use C#, JavaScript or Boo syntax on either platform). What kind of system are you using?
@PhenomenalHeadShot No idea either. We're happy to help people, but it's hard when they won't explain what their problem is. The river works in the Editor on both platforms and will function correctly in any type of build – it's just a mesh object anyway.
@PhenomenalHeadShot I'll send you a PM with my email address, feel free to send me a screenshot of what you're seeing and I'll talk you through the solution.
@PhenomenalHeadShot I'm guessing you're referring to the supplied shader? If so, consider that you can easily replace the animated water shader for a simpler one if you are targeting older systems or mobile platforms.
@PhenomenalHeadShot The river is an object like any other GameObject with a Mesh Filter and Mesh Renderer component in your scene. Create a new material using any shader you prefer using and drag it to the first slot under 'Materials' in tyne Mesh Renderer component of the river object.
@SixTimesNothing Is the river object supposed to be like a pre-made object in the package? If so, mines not there.. )= I guess i could try re-downloading it and see if anything changes. I hope this works because i have a nice little waterfall and a nice litte pond with no river to connect them.
@PhenomenalHeadShot When you click New River on the Water Tool Script, it will automatically create an object called River in your scene. This object has a Mesh Renderer component to which you can assign a new material under the Materials dropdown list. You just need to set the first material to the one you want.
@KeehanProductions This appears to be a new bug in the latest version of Unity. A quick play and stop in the editor gives you rotation back. Going to be looking into this.
@dandamannnnn Make sure you're right clicking to get focus in the scene view before hitting 'r'. Failing that, open a ticket at feedback (dot) sixtimesnothing (dot) com and we'll see if we can help you out.
@rokstar234 We've tried this on multiple cards on PC and Mac machines, mostly machines which are 3 years old or less. The shader requires Shader Model 3.0 enable cards or better.
@SixTimesNothing Hi, i also have the same error using the river shader. "no subshaders can run on this graphics card". mine is radeon hd6950. any help?
@DrCrenos Try grabbing the river water shader from the Unity Bootcamp project and see if your card supports that - I think it also supports UV animation.
@chrisofboro yes, but i figured out what the problem was, i had to right click and press "r". besides that, apparently my graphics card can't handle the shader that came with the river tool so i can't use it... stupid PC bullcrap...
@DrCrenos This might also be because you are using Unity indie? Unfortunately, the included shader uses refraction/reflection which is Unity Pro only :\
thix is my firt time i use unity but this game engine is so easy to use and these tools u make are so easy to use and look so awsome realy thank u Six Times Nothing!
it doesnt work to me when i press add river node and then on the terrain it select the terrain so doesnt work i have unity 3d version 3.x.x or something like this so it must work but it doesnt
gostaria de perguntar será que tem como vc fazer um tutorial de como importar arquivos tipo carros arvores casas e colocar texturas em cada um deles??? FAZENDO FAVOR......... e se tiver como me passa o msn tbm
I'm having trouble with the material. I've downloaded the script from the Asset Store (which includes the materials of course), but all that I can get the materials to do is, well, be pink and do nothing. Not sure what to do :-)
@Unislash The included material requires Unity Pro - with the indie version, the material will be pink and won't offer any properties to drag textures into.
@somedjdudes What won't open? It's supplied as a .unitypackage file which you should be able to easily import into your project. What problems are you experiencing?
@SixTimesNothing hey dude hope you can anwser this one , i did everything u said on the tutorial , unpackaged it , perfectly but when i press r to create river nodes , it just dose not work . now i have fiddled with it abit and got 1 node but its not working like yours in any way shape or from , i hope you will beable to help me , also do you need pro to use this , thanks
@Satan820 Make sure that you're right clicking in the scene view to give it focus first before hitting 'r'. If that isn't helping, open a ticket at feedback (dot) sixtimesnothing (dot) com and we'll try to help you out. I'm fairly sure Pro is only required for the water shader, though if you're using Free you can simply replace the shader with one that doesn't use reflection/refraction.
@thepivotmaster36 I just sent you a message. I'm guessing that the Editor scripts have been moved out of the Editor folder, as this is what would normally cause that error to occur.
@superroblox The built-in camera type has that function (screenpointtoray) - make sure you aren't overriding the camera type anywhere else in your code
@superroblox I'm guessing that somewhere else in your scripts, you have a class defined using the name "camera" that is overriding Unity's camera type definition. The error you're getting means that the "screenpointtoray" function isn't a part of the type "camera". Since it most definitely is defined in Unity's camera type, I'm guessing that you have a class called "camera" that Unity is referencing - thus the error. Hope this clears things up - if not message me and we'll work it out
You guys should really state it works best with pro, and what versions these are compatible with.

@dandamannnnn Make sure you're right clicking to get focus in the scene view before hitting 'r'. Failing that, open a ticket at feedback (dot) sixtimesnothing (dot) com and we'll see if we can help you out.

lol, my NVIDIA GeForce 7025 cant support your shader, what card do you have
rokstar234 9 months ago
@rokstar234 We've tried this on multiple cards on PC and Mac machines, mostly machines which are 3 years old or less. The shader requires Shader Model 3.0 enable cards or better.
SixTimesNothing 9 months ago
@SixTimesNothing well that card is 4 years old... im searching up soem new graphics cards now, BTW that Tyrant game seems interesting, is it a MMO?
rokstar234 9 months ago
@SixTimesNothing Hi, i also have the same error using the river shader. "no subshaders can run on this graphics card". mine is radeon hd6950. any help?

@EISOBAX well how do you get reflection/refraction in indie?
debs222 10 months ago
Now unity screwed up all together!!! What's going on?
I created the river & now I can't rotate or pan the camera.
Tried deleting but it didn't work... need help
dragonfly7491 10 months ago

hey the river tool isnt working In Unity idk why but the mesh will appear like 5000 miles away from where the nodes are or it dosent show up at all
tmaninsa 11 months ago
@DrCrenos Try grabbing the river water shader from the Unity Bootcamp project and see if your card supports that - I think it also supports UV animation.
SixTimesNothing 1 year ago
its broken. i press "add river node" then "r" but it only creates the first one and won't create any more...
DrCrenos 1 year ago
@DrCrenos are you pressing "add river node" each time you want to add another node?
chrisofboro 1 year ago
@chrisofboro yes, but i figured out what the problem was, i had to right click and press "r". besides that, apparently my graphics card can't handle the shader that came with the river tool so i can't use it... stupid PC bullcrap...
DrCrenos 1 year ago
@DrCrenos This might also be because you are using Unity indie? Unfortunately, the included shader uses refraction/reflection which is Unity Pro only :\
chrisofboro 1 year ago
thix is my firt time i use unity but this game engine is so easy to use and these tools u make are so easy to use and look so awsome realy thank u Six Times Nothing!
draaisma100 1 year ago
Umh.... mine works well... but i hav a question... where did u get that awesome looking river water texture?
AixProd 1 year ago
@AixProd The material used in this tutorial video is included with the package you download from our website or from Unity's Asset Store
chrisofboro 1 year ago
@chrisofboro oh.. ok> :D

It doesn't work.
Fin1002 1 year ago
it doesnt work to me when i press add river node and then on the terrain it select the terrain so doesnt work i have unity 3d version 3.x.x or something like this so it must work but it doesnt
umaga342 1 year ago
@umaga342 Make sure after pressing "add river node" you aren't left-mouse-clicking the terrain. The process looks like this:
1.) Press "add river node"
2.) Right-mouse click the terrain
3.) Press the letter 'r' on your keyboard while your mouse is on the position you want to add a node.
Hope this helps!

I'm having trouble with the material. I've downloaded the script from the Asset Store (which includes the materials of course), but all that I can get the materials to do is, well, be pink and do nothing. Not sure what to do :-)
Unislash 1 year ago
@Unislash The included material requires Unity Pro - with the indie version, the material will be pink and won't offer any properties to drag textures into.
chrisofboro 1 year ago
@chrisofboro Ok, good to know :-). Thanks!

can ihave the river material please?
TheTarzoc 1 year ago
@TheTarzoc You can get the river material from the .unitypackage on the Asset Store or from our site. It's free. :)
SixTimesNothing 1 year ago
@somedjdudes perhaps you downloaded the .zip from the website. If so, just drag the folder that is unzipped into the asset folder of your project.
chrisofboro 1 year ago
@somedjdudes What won't open? It's supplied as a .unitypackage file which you should be able to easily import into your project. What problems are you experiencing?
SixTimesNothing 1 year ago
@SixTimesNothing hey dude hope you can anwser this one , i did everything u said on the tutorial , unpackaged it , perfectly but when i press r to create river nodes , it just dose not work . now i have fiddled with it abit and got 1 node but its not working like yours in any way shape or from , i hope you will beable to help me , also do you need pro to use this , thanks
Satan820 10 months ago
@Satan820 Make sure that you're right clicking in the scene view to give it focus first before hitting 'r'. If that isn't helping, open a ticket at feedback (dot) sixtimesnothing (dot) com and we'll try to help you out. I'm fairly sure Pro is only required for the water shader, though if you're using Free you can simply replace the shader with one that doesn't use reflection/refraction.

@SixTimesNothing thanks for the feedback :)

@thepivotmaster36 I just sent you a message. I'm guessing that the Editor scripts have been moved out of the Editor folder, as this is what would normally cause that error to occur.

superroblox 1 year ago
@superroblox Hi, can you let us know what errors you are experiencing and what version of Unity you have and we'll see what we can do to help.
SixTimesNothing 1 year ago
@SixTimesNothing it in unity 3.04f or 3.05f it says camera has no definiton for current
type camera has no definition for screenpointtoray
superroblox 1 year ago
@superroblox The built-in camera type has that function (screenpointtoray) - make sure you aren't overriding the camera type anywhere else in your code
chrisofboro 1 year ago
@chrisofboro sorry but i dont know what that means...
superroblox 1 year ago
@superroblox I'm guessing that somewhere else in your scripts, you have a class defined using the name "camera" that is overriding Unity's camera type definition. The error you're getting means that the "screenpointtoray" function isn't a part of the type "camera". Since it most definitely is defined in Unity's camera type, I'm guessing that you have a class called "camera" that Unity is referencing - thus the error. Hope this clears things up - if not message me and we'll work it out
