@EODCBandit I think you'll find that's called the Doppler effect. Sirens are not designed to do this, it's just how physics effects sound waves. As the vehicle with the siren approaches the wavelength will become shorter, which means the pitch of the sound changes. It will happen with any sound.

I prefer the first one wich is yelp for intersection area or in crowded traffic the pitch of yelp is higher so more car drivers can hear you.The Quebec city police car have the second tone and is not noisy enough so they have problems to clear traffic.

When not traffic wail is there for that,and hi-lo

tone is used when traffic is far away from you

ahead.The "rumbler" seems effective combined with wail or yelp.
