Which would mean that you can't "go straight to bi to gay" nor can you choose. What changes is the decision you make concerning what sex to date, not what sex you're attracted to.

I totally get you, Angie. As a bisexual male, I have had similar issues. My dad and I argued over this last winter break (after I came out) that I couldn't go to another town for a NBA game with a friend and share a hotel room because my dad thought I was going to have sex with him. He's straight and I'm not attracted to him, didn't seem to make much sense to my dad. I did end up going with my friend and it was all very platonic.

Marriage comes with a boatload of automatic rights & priviliges - hospital visitation, burial rights, child custody, joint property - literally every legal and financial transaction a couple makes is simplified by being legally married. @ashleyaesthetic1990 I think that's one of the downsides of belonging to a minority group - having to represent/explain that group to non-members. Most people have little choice about what race they're seen as (even if it's inaccurate) but with sexuality, particularly bisexuality, the temptation to stay in the closet to avoid having to explain everything is definitely there. I can understand why people don't want to "come out" gay or atheist or transgendered.

@Lincolnextreme Now, if you are gay (attracted to the *only* same sex) but decide to go back/stay in the closet and only date people of the other sex, that doesn't mean you went straight, because in that case you still like the same sex. Same the other way 'round -- but that doesn't happen often. What happens a lot though is that you are not really sure of your sexuality

Sexuality is unique to each individual; it's our society's obsessive insecurity about sexuality that makes us so focused on categorizing people by their sexual and romantic tastes. My dad and I argued over this last winter break (after I came out) that I couldn't go to another town for a NBA game with a friend and share a hotel room because my dad thought I was going to have sex with him. Marriage comes with a boatload of automatic rights & priviliges - hospital visitation, burial rights, child custody, joint property - literally every legal and financial transaction a couple makes is simplified by being legally married. Gay couples in "domestic partnerships" or similar "separate but equal" scenarios have to work 10x harder to get those basics of marriage.

I've watched a lot of your videos and I have to say this is one that hits home the most. I am 20 years old and have finally 'decided" that I am bisexual. I understand what you mean by not wanting to say you are because the few people I have told ask me absurd questions or seemed "freaked" out. Thank you for making me feel more at home with my preferences rather than the urge to keep it on the down low :)

@ashleyaesthetic1990 I think that's one of the downsides of belonging to a minority group - having to represent/explain that group to non-members. Most people have little choice about what race they're seen as (even if it's inaccurate) but with sexuality, particularly bisexuality, the temptation to stay in the closet to avoid having to explain everything is definitely there. I can understand why people don't want to "come out" gay or atheist or transgendered.
