menhiem steam roller. havent heard in years. the vinyl , I love hp lovecraft ultimate spinach sunshine and shadows etc. this has orchestral backing or just mellotron.
The Move had such cool taste in their choice of cover material. They did the ultimate covers with folkie Tom Paxton's "Last Thing On My Mind" and did two Nazz tunes when most of the world had never heard of Todd Rundgren. This Ars Nova cover is another example of how they sought out unique material.
Sounds in fact very Celtic eh? Most Western popmusic is like that ,fortified Celtic music.Especially in the sixties, except in soulmusic (Stax and so forth) and later reggae and French pop with Latin -and Rai arabian-influence, Harmony-singing in the sixties was special and the Move was the most underrated in this genre
Lets also remember that even though the MOVE is a great band, they admit to patterning much of their music off of beatle songs like I am the Walrus or Penny Lane. Im sure if you told any members of the MOVE, that you thought RINGO was a bad drummer, they would laugh at you. You can bet your ass that all the members of the MOVE appreciated and respected the talents of all 4 beatles.
To put it simply, Ringo was a " songwriters" drummer. And after spending 30 years in music/songwriting myself, I can tell you it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find drummers like ringo.
Ringo may not have been as technically advanced as many drummers, but his uniqueness, dynamics and melodic drum rolls made up for that. Check out ringos drum fill on the 1st break part of " With a little help from my friends " . Its not fast or complex , but it is melodic and well thought out , and each tom he hits has MEANING to it. Its speaks to you....Sure, Ringo was no Keith Moon, and I am glad about that. Id rather hear sparse drumming that has meaning, then cluttered drumming .
ecksact i agree, ringo was only propped up by the likes of John, Paul and George, who were absolute genius's, sad John and George are no longer with us, if you listen to some of the beatles demo stuff off the anthology albums, the sheik of Araby for example with Pete Best on Drums, pisses on Ringo. I've got the best of the move and have heard Piece of my heart, luv Bevs drumming in that, great version too, 2nd to Janis Joplins version.
I disagree, Ringo was a good/solid drummer during his beatle years. Check out songs like " You wont see me" , Something , Come Together, Rain , Ticket to Ride , etc. These songs have very unique and solid drumwork proving ringos abilities. Ringo was also unique in that he did not feel the need to clutter up great pop songs, with to much drumwork . Ringo could hold a interesting and solid beat WITHOUT constantly hitting the high hats thru the whole song.
another talent of ringos, was his ability s to not have a ego, and take advice from Lennon/Mcartney on drumming patterns/ideas. I would be DELIGHTED if I could ever find a person to play drums like Ringo did. Ringo worked for the SONG and the vocal melody lines/ bass lines. Ringo did not try to overshadow the songs. IMHO, that is a sign of a good drummer. Ringo also knew the importance of dynamics. Another sign of a good drummer.
I don't know if anyone agrees but I think Bev Bevan was one of the top drummers in the 60's, even better than I hate to say it, ringo star, Charlie watts etc.
@wezza60 One more thing ESaetre (I think that's right!) has posted a live version of the Move singing Piece Of My Heart". Listen to Bev Bevan's druns on that! Enjoy!
roy wood turned up at an elo part two concert he was not on the bill but did two songs blackberry way and flowers in the rain couldnt believe my luck as ive liked the guy for years and the move and yes he bought the house down what a graet memory i have of that night
@nitramtenab there was a really fucked up situation at the first elo concert roy didnt want to go on stage first cause the group was his idea jeff didnt want to go on stage first cause the group was getting hits with his vocals so there manager shoved them both on stage at the same time .
Jon is married and doing well. Last time I saw him I think he was living in Hawaii. My brother & I met him and his wife at a hotel near LAX for drinks....and last I heard Wyatt was working for some used, rare bookstore in Manhattan. WOW...yes, Maury also played with Tim Buckley (on the Starsailor LP) as well as he played with Judy Collins, Trini Lopez, Janis, and a few others,,,,
Didnt they have sam brown on the secound album he backed dionne warwick at newport in 1969 {i was there but i didnt realize until i heard an interview with him on the radio ,i think he died }
Bought 'Shazam' album (1970) on holidays in Weymouth,Dorset in 1972 from a toy shop that also sold records ! Although it was new it was faulty & skipped all through much of side 2 of which this was the first track.Couldnt return it cos it was 200 miles away before i could play it & they probably didnt have another copy anyway ! Good album though with great tracks like 'Hello Susie' & 'Beautiful Daughter'.Was on 'Regal Zonophone' record label. Moral : dont buy records on holiday !
I havent heard this song in maybe 15 years or so,and only came across it a few days ago by accident. I must say it was a real joy hearing it again after so many years.Brings me straight back to the early 90s when I was 17 or so.Those were great, carefree days.
If you look at the computer code for this video there is a funny coincidence it has ZEP in it ,the move was supposed to be the opening act for led zepellin at the fillmore east [they could have blown led zepellin off the stage ] .
This was originaly by ars nova from that great songwriting team of wyatt day and jon pierson the move left out one verse and added an electric sitar solo.
Although Pierson & Day did most of the writing, Ars Nova was my brother Maury Baker's band....before their 2nd LP he left and joined Janis Joplin's Kozmic Blues Band...
he sounds just like pierson. I have this on stereo lp. is beautiful daughter or snapshots of a album in my mind on here

Roy Wood was at his peak in Shazam.
Although this is a cover Wood´s sense of pop-
music is heard in this song. It´ s been
said with a good reason that Roy Wood is
one the few who knew what pop- music really is. Bev Bevan has also a great part on Shazam.
