Hello doctor, I am more concerned about the drug messing with my hormones. It is true that DHT and testosterone have very important effects on the male body. Is there a risk of losing muscle tissue and other testosterone effected aspects?
Hey Dr Lam, im the 22 year old from the previous post. last week i went to my doctor to get a propecia script, he said i was in very early stage of recession at the temples. Is there a chance that the propecia could bring back some of my hairline given that i have acted earlyish?.
I have also read a lot of negative things on the side effects on the internet. is a lot of this information on the internet regarding the side effects over exaggerated and is propecia safe
@MrCuriousity1012 i personally think it is a vocal minority that has a problem. they most likely do have a problem. which percentage of them actually are due to propecia is unclear. i personally have only had one patient claim this out of about 2000 or so prescriptions i have given.
Dr Lam, Im currently 22 years old and have recently started noticing that my temples have begun to recede, i am thinking of going on propecia, will it be useful for me in this situation?
It's unfortunate that DHT is being painted as the bad guy. Sure a castrated man never goes bald and this proves the androgenic role in balding but men who don't bald don't necessarily have lower levels of DHT. Surely the really culprit is the number of androgen receptors, 5 alpha reductase activity and immunological response within the hair follicle. I just don't buy into this systemic lowering of the DHT serum levels as a treatment. DHT has many profoundly positive effects on the young man.
Dr. Lam, Im noticing some light thinning in the back of my head(crown)when I let me hair grow for a month or so. Im 28 years old and African American, would you recommend Propecia for my case? Also, Im worried about the side effects like ed and decreasing libido? Does using propecia increase the risks of getting prostrate cancer or any other form of cancer? Thanks
@khalil246 i cannot make a clinical diagnosis without seeing you but if you are a man with male pattern baldness then it should help. libido can decrease in about 1% of men. the 5 mg dose (which is too high for you) has been shown to reduce prostate cancer risk long term by 20 to 30%. to understand that please type in youtube in teh search window "propecia prostate cancer" and watch my video on the subject.
Dr. Lam, to what extent would a person expect shedding within the first 6 weeks of starting minoxodil if they have already been on finasteride for over a year?
@jrrobichaux great question. i don't know exactly. first of all shedding in the first month after starting rogaine is already quite variable. if hairs are already stabilized with propecia, perhaps less so. however, since rogaine works through a different mechanism of changing vellus hairs by pushing hairs into anagen phase, there still could be some shedding.
Dr. Lam- the progressiveness of hair loss is different for everyone right? someone could lose hair very rapidly, but someone else could lose it over 30/40 years?

1. absolutely minox works in the front. the label represents only the initial FDA approval study from the 90s. it works just as well in the front.
2. i have no experience or opinion with nizoral shampoo. sorry.
