was shooting some shotguns and rifles today for thanksgiving. spent 40 minutes shooting .22, 20 gauge, 12 gauge, and a .50 cal muzzle loader. fine the entire time then my last shot, 20 gauge slug, didn't hold it tight enough in, bruised my collar bone. gym's gonna suck

My favorite self-defense shotgun load is "T" shot which is .210 diameter. It's the biggest shot you can generally buy for a decent price in 25 round boxes. Any bigger and it drops to 10 and 5 round boxes for a lot more money. It's considered a long range goose load. the 3-1/2" 1-9/16 oz load sends 83 pellets downrange at around 1300 FPS. That's the same as firing 83 .22 LR at the same time.

You can hit with a shotgun from a pretty decent distance, particularly with 3" mags (and 3.5" super mags through a full choke will REALLY cover some distance), but the shot pattern will spread and slow the farther away you are. I'm sure he would be capable of hitting them from much farther away, but for maximum destructive power (and therefore entertainment), his distance was about right.
