Henry Kissinger forced the North Vietnamese to the peace table after the US routed the North in the closing battle.The Paris Peace Accord Agreement ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam on January 27, 1973.(All) of the American troops came home for good.Kissinger was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. North Vietnam re-entered the South in 75. America took no action.Watergate was on. The South fought the North alone.It was the Embassy Staff choppered out.

They took along a US flag that had flown over their firebase and put it up over the B Btry firebase where it flew until the task force departed in Aug 72. Some non-combat troops stayed until 1973.

Keep in mind, The Fall of Saigon triggered the largest evacuation in history by helicopter. The US evacuated Tens of thousands of South Vietnamese civilians as well as American civilians.. The evacuation was named Operation Frequent Wind.. Look it up... History is fun to learn.

@MarkoParabucki Myth? The only time North Vietnam wanted to negotiate was when we were able to bomb them. We had the forces to hasten the end of the war. Once we stopped, they had no need to talk to us which only prolonged the fight, resulting in more casualties on both sides. Most of our guys were in their teens. I was an oldie at 24. I flew helos and spent too much time picking up guys who were wounded or dead. Yes, they were stabbed in the back by gov't and the peace movement
They needed room to land incoming helos and they couldn't move the ones that had already landed. They either had to refuse to take on more people (by letting helos land) or shove helos overboard to provide room for more people.
There's only so much room on a ship and helicopters need a lot of space to land. You can see (by looking at the helmets) that even the flight crew was participating in shoving their precious craft overboard.
And even more for preserving true Communist poverty, indoctrination camps, and driving hundreds of thousands out (among them members of the NVA who decided to see other systems).

@iroc2515 If I understand correctly, when helicopter pilots had made their final evacuation to the aircraft carriers, they needed to make space for other flights that were still coming. The only way they could do that was by dumping the helicopters in the ocean.
@VanCanada2010 Also, many of those choppers were S. Vietnamese machines, commandeered by their pilots to get out. They were the ones pushed overboard to allow space for the incoming helicopters..be they USMC, Air America or more RVN helos.

Unfortunately the US intervention into Vietnam was doomed from almost the beginning thanks to horrible mistakes in policy like relying on Ngo Ding Diem and trying to relocate villagers far too quickly with the 'fortified hamlet' program. The US government caused a lot of needless suffering with their reckless tactics like spraying agent orange and bombing the holy hell out of Laos, it's shameful to look back on.

Keep in mind, The Fall of Saigon triggered the largest evacuation in history by helicopter. The US evacuated Tens of thousands of South Vietnamese civilians as well as American civilians.. The evacuation was named Operation Frequent Wind.. Look it up... History is fun to learn.

Once we stopped, they had no need to talk to us which only prolonged the fight, resulting in more casualties on both sides. Most of our guys were in their teens. I was an oldie at 24. I flew helos and spent too much time picking up guys who were wounded or dead. Yes, they were stabbed in the back by gov't and the peace movement

They needed room to land incoming helos and they couldn't move the ones that had already landed. They either had to refuse to take on more people (by letting helos land) or shove helos overboard to provide room for more people.
There's only so much room on a ship and helicopters need a lot of space to land. You can see (by looking at the helmets) that even the flight crew was participating in shoving their precious craft overboard.

@iroc2515 If I understand correctly, when helicopter pilots had made their final evacuation to the aircraft carriers, they needed to make space for other flights that were still coming. The only way they could do that was by dumping the helicopters in the ocean.

THE FALL OF SAIGON - was the headline I still remember today from the mid-70s, and there was a picture of a rooftop evacuation involving the last Americans out of Saigon, and what a pathetic humiliation that must have been to the American Nation, having sacrifised ten of thousands of their troops lives. Soon after those shots, the Viet Cong marched in victory into Saigon. And seeing what they're doing in Afghanistan today, it seems the yanks still haven't learned their lessons.

In the late 50's Castro took over Cuba not long after he sided with Russia. Where was the US. Communism 90 miles from Key West and the US was fighting Communism on the other side of the world. My parents came here on their honeymoon and were advised to stay till Castro was out. Fifty years later he's still in power, WHY.I'm glad I was born here, an American, but still wonder why.

I wish these Vietnamese people living in the U.S. stop flying the yellow and red stripe flag. It no longer represents a country. Lets face it you couldn't hang on to your country after Nixon pulled all the U.S. troops out. Keep dreaming about Saigon cause it will never come back.

@nativepoint14 Well there was only a few carriers and there was no bases near by only Vietnam, PRC China and Cambodia all of which where Communist and at the time hostile any where else was out of range and the carriers did not want to move as thats where the said they would be to the many Refugees fleeing the country...

@thebritish25 The US BACKED the Khmer ROuge after the VIetnamese invasion in 1979! And the USSR BACKED Vietnam and the democratic government! The US also backed the Khmer Rouge while they was in power! Vietnam launched an embargo on the Khmer Rouge's regime already in 1975! And it was THEY who, backed by the USSR, invaded Cambodia and freed the Cambodian people from the US KHMER ROUGE PUPPET REGIME!

No the American puppet was The Khmer Republic they overthrew the democratic goverment and placed a puppet Republic as well as supplied them. The Rouge supplied by and was a puppet of China hence why when the Vietnamese invaded the Chinese invaded Vietnam while the US did nothing.

But it's important to say that the USA and the UK gave the Khmer Rouge lots of supplies both under and especially after their dictatorship (Reagan = dictator, Nazi German puppet), when the USSR made an embargo on it.
