Yeah, they sound 'alive' (but the z1 is not the 'fattest' actually). Actually current synth production sound 'flat' and boring. Even hardware synths (which are way cheaper to produce today). These were expensive synth, for professional users, so there was a war between producers to get to market leadership..especially immediately after Nordlead (the first VA) came out..

We spent hours on tiny LCD and knobs for days...

Almost all you hear till late 90 were mostly Roland/Korg/Clavia/Virus stuff...

I have a z1. It has one of the best arp's for sequencing ever... Still to this day I can't find one on other boards as fun to program. Don't make this your only synth, but if you like wired sounds and speaker killing bass ( by experience) get this. I think it's an industrial and experimental machine. This and an ob-12 = Alien death machine!

Artists are paying an unreal amount of money to obtain a MOSS board for their KARMAs & TRITONs when they can buy a used Z1 for the same price and get much greater polyphany and many more presets & combinations.

To the doubters, I think this guy does some of the finest demos of synths on the 'net. He really takes a piece of gear through the paces and strikes at the heart of the instrument. You don't see him trying to twist an instrument somewhere it doesn't want to go--he really captures the essence of each synth and shows the possibilities it contains.

And thankfully he spares us boring sounds like EP's, organs and other done to death sounds better left to sampling.

I think you're being a bit unfair. The guy is a good programmer, and he obviously has a very specific aesthetic he's going for. I understand if you're not into what he's doing, but it's not as if he doesn't try to create interesting sounds in his own way.

Jexus = genius. I have seen nearly all of your videos - why aren't you signed with a major recording label? I have 3 questions:

1.) Doesn't the plight of the pig make you sad?

2.) Where is the transpose function on the Korg Z1?

3.) How can I adjust the velocity sensitivity? I hooked up my z1 and axiom to Cubase and the axiom's velocity sensitivity ran circles around my Z1.

However after watching both parts of the Z1 video, I was very, very dissapointed..!

If you compare this vid to let's say your MS2000 one, this one is very plain and uses very similar sounds. Thank god I allready have a Z1, because IF I had to judge this great synth by this video I would have though something like: "WTF would I want one of these?" I for one would have liked more diversity like in your vid I mentioned earlier.

unisono does not count as "fatness" in terms of fat stomache of a synthesizer. just compare the z1 and the prophecy next to each other with a high qualitiy mixer like a studer. I was about to sell my prophecy and buy a z1 a year ago... but decided not to do so. Even the seller of the z1 understood and was comprehending - he has both and is still selling his z1 :) anyay, the z1 is much more fun to programm because of the fantastic display.

Wow,you just fail to see that the Z1 is superior to the Prophecy in several ways.. Who was talking about Unison anyway? Stating that the Z1 is not a fat synth is an understatement to say at least. I know a formation of producers with worlfame and numerous hits under their belts, and they have used the Z1 in almost ALL of their productions, for 'fatness'. I'll keep it at that and you keep it at listening through a studer LOL. Oh and neither the Prophecy or the Z1 are fun to program, it's hell!

The Z1 can be used in ALL music genre's, that includes VERY FAT leads for trance, hardstyle and even hardcore.. If you're not able of programming these sounds, it's your flaw, not the Z1's ;)

@drtritri: That's quite wrong. Even a new Korg Prophecy cost about 1400 Euros (2500 DM, I bought one when it came out). The price of a 12-voice Z1 was around 1800$.

You get a Z1 in mint condition for 700 Euros now. Do the math.

You're right, from a logical standpoint the Z1 can't be underrated. But I think despite all the praise this beauty got most people couldn't cope with the vast amount of possibilities of this machine. The Z1 wasn't sold in high numbers despite it's near perfection ;)

One thing is clear, my next synth will be a Z1. I already have a Prophecy, so the Z1 is the next logical step for me :D
