Serena did do those things, but she did that when she was like 16 and now she knows better and she doesn't want Blair to make the same mistakes, and as for her being not that pretty, I think she is but compared to blair she isn't so I think that's why many people think she's not that pretty, and if she didn't start the whole conflict by sleeping with Nate, then Chuck and Blair might have not happened.
