One of the greatest grand finals of all time. A draw would have been fitting. I have watched that game many times and i always wish there was just a minute or so more to go because i definitely think we would've beaten them. But it wasn't to be and Hawthorn got the score on the board in the first half while some of our players were focused on going hard at the player instead of winning the ball. The hawks prevailed on that day and in 2008.

Hawthorn today have had to actually develop their list, where in the 80s, they either had their strong zone to recruit players from, or buy them from elsewhere.

As I have said before, within 5 years of the salary cap and draft being introduced, the Hawthorn team of the 80s disintegrated.

Hawthorn is the team most likely to beat Geelong this year though.

Beating the team destined for the wooden spoon doesn't make you great.

Winning this year's premiership will though.

Fair enough! The 89 GF is nearly 20 years old and with the team Haw had back then no one was gonnna beat 'em. Geel's last final's appearence was 81. And considering you's thrashed Melb by 94 point (88 GF) Geel had to go in hard. It's a Grand Final for crying out loud!! You do anything to win, even if it involves dirty tactics. I was there in 89 and yes, some of the Geel players went too far. But it's a 'contact' Sport, and the game was different back then.

Ablett Snr was far more explosive and could dominate a game easier than Jnr.

Jnr doesn't have the same goalscoring capacity. However, modern players have better fitness and are more disciplined.

Ablett Senior hardly trained before Malcolm Blight arrived at the club. To do what he did with no training...a marvel.

Hawthorn had a strong zone, had lots of money to buy the best players and were a Melbourne based club.

Geelong always found it hard to get good players because people didn't want to live in Geelong except locals, or interstate coutry boys.

Geelong is the most unique club in the AFL to this day, as with Port, we're the only club that represents a city.

If I must be a prick, the only goal you missed was one of my favourites. In the second quarter when he took that fantastic mark on the lead, then kicked that beautiful straight goal. That goal may not be spectacular, but it's textbook football.
