  • my mom use to sing me thing song. it was from some musical she saw, and she always loved to slow it down from the faster version, and give it that bluesy and painful soul. this sounds a lot like that...good memories..also good with rainymood

  • @MelodyStark It's from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. Personally I prefer the operatic version, considering that the song is from a "jazz opera".

  • reminds me of my grandma that died in 98, her mother passed away when she was five and she cried about her until she died ,her father kept them all together,my biggest fear was that someday I would forget what she looked and sounded like, I remember staring at her in the hospital ,etching her in my brain can't watch the homes movies of her,its too painful ,she was my best friend

  • Funny I came from a past that I wouldn't wish on even my favorite enemies...this song is the reason why them, even myself is still round to tell u about it!! R.I.P.

  • Mahalia! A product of Greater Salem Baptist Church - 218 W 781st St. The late Rev. Leon Jenkins, Sr. was the pastor during most of Mahalia' time . I think though that she joined under the late Rev. Petty back in the 1930's.

  • Does anyone know where to find sheet music for this arrangement?

    I have exhausted my resources.

Please help if you have any info about this medley.

  • Hello i was wondering if anyone knows if Nina Simone also sang this song? I have a certain version stuck in my mind and I can't match it! Thanks so much! Awesome song!

  • What an incredible American treasure!

  • She was a phenomenal singer unlike anything I've heard in my life. I'm doing my black history month project on Ms. Mahalia Jackson.

  • **SingerHighNotes**

    Excellent choice!!

  • WOW - Ditto on needing to hear this now

  • I thought no one could touch Billie Holiday's version of this. I like Ella's and Sarah's, but I always thought Billie's was miles ahead of everyone's. I think Mahalia actually sings this just as good if not better than Billie Holiday.

P.S. I didn't know Mahalia recorded pop songs.

  • you just cant beat the classics i really needed to hear this now thank you

  • My grandmother was a big fan of Mahalia Jackson and had many of her records. I grew up listening to her. There was no one like her and never will be. She was a gift to the world. I needed to hear this today, performed the way it was meant to be sung. This is it.

  • Music has healing power!!!

  • Actually you mis-informed cretin, Summer time, is a song from the play, Porgy 'n Bess, written by George Gershwin, a Jew.

  • WTF!!! Oppressed cotton picking people?!?! You should think before you post certain things. That comment was bound to offend somebody.

  • LOL!!

  • You should hear this song on a big stereo. I have this song at home and I play it on sunday mornings on a big home sound system with a subwoofer. WOW! Awesome

  • What about I'm On My Way? I bet that rocks the house... let me know!!!

    Peter Tschirky

  • This woman know she can make someone cry but in a good way to give you strength

  • hello, this voice give me power when I'm down and out..... Peter Tschirky

  • LOL... ?

  • she can;t be too big of a fan. i grew up listening to mahalia all my life, not to mention that i have the old vinyl recordings of these songs. this is mahalia. the record is brown. the song is on a reord that also has the songs sunrise sunset, it don't cost very much, brown baby, and c'mon children let's shout. recorded on harmony records, a division of columbia records.

  • I'm sure one of Mahalia's biggest fans should be able to recognize her voice. Let your Grandma listen again. This voice is unmistakable, and anyways I have this recording on an LP...so you're the one that's mistaken. I believe this is the only secular song Mahalia ever recorded.

  • Actually, maybe your Grandmother should take another listen, because this voice is unmistakable, and anyways I have this on an LP so it IS Mahalia Jackson. I believe it was the only secular song she ever recorded.

  • deep deep emotion....

  • Terrific!!! Mahalia is awesome Jackson!!! Beautiful song, beautiful voice,!!!

  • Okay. Now I see what the deal is. She kind of spliced "Motherless Child" right into the middle of "Summertime." Very innovative, but if you are just wanting to hear the Motherless Child part for any reason, you can find it from 2:14 through 4:42 on this video. Everything before and after that is "Summertime." Interesting and GAH-geous!!!

  • I didn't hear Motherless Child here at all. I guess that must be the name of the album or something???

  • It's a 2 part song Summertime first than Motherless child

  • Thanks! I thought I had scanned throughly through the video but the fact that the video ends on Summertime again had me fooled. Now I found "Motherless Child." I am BLOWN AWAY. I never heard anybody since it half that good -- speaking as a motherless child myself! LOVE IT.

  • wow ! wow ! wow ! she makes me cry.... an angel

  • la plus grande . . .j'en pleure . . .

  • I didn't know that Mahalia Jackson did Summertime, WOW!

  • My mom used to sing this to me when I was small. It soothes my soul:)

  • Definately, remember it like it was yesterday. I'll have to check out leona's version.

  • yes please!! she did great i think =)

  • Truly a gift from God, I feel so inspired listening to her voice.

  • Me too. When I listen it's like she's in the same room. She's an extraordinary spirit.
