After Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richards there is Ray Davies. If The Kinks would have had the record sales of The Stones or Beatles he would rank number one.

You can't judge a songwriter by record sales. Ray Davies is right up there with Dylan and Lennon.
Jagger/Richards/McCartney aren't in the same league.
Pete Townshend calls Ray Davies the poet laureate of England.

YouTube are to be congratulated for posting what is the best song from the last ten years. Ray Davies has been called a visionary genius, and he belongs right up there with William Blake, George Orwell, Joseph Conrad et al. In so far as they can be called English, so is he. In this song, an ageing rock star reviews his life with a certain tiredness and previews his death. Magnificent! He still knocks Dylan, Macca and Jagger - the only serious competition - into a cocked hat.
