I remember as kid watching this. I am not a bowler, but I would have to say that when that ball is released and the crowd crescendo's into applause in anticipation of a strike is as exciting as any sporting event. Something very dramatic about it. I would also have to say that Schenkel and Nelson Burton are as good as any play by play and color tandem in any sports telecast history.
I was at this telecast. my mom worked a block away from riviera and she would let me take off school to attend the firestone all week. would bowl in the junior TofC the weekend before and then have a week of no school and watching bowling all day. sigh....lotsa great memories!
love the post. You know, the greatest description of Roth's approach I ever heard was "Cavalry Charge." It looks so out of control, but so powerful in the same way. Great stuff.
Thanks so much for putting games like this on. I'm 54 and Earl was my hero.I quit bowling about 20yrs. ago but, recently I discovered youtube and now I'm back bowling again because I've been watching Earl again. I'm right handed but, I've based my game on his style and I'm back to bowling consistant 200+ games again. Thanks!
I'm right handed too, but bowl tenpins left handed, inspired by Earl and also for the reason that I didn't want to ruin my duckpins game which I rolled at the pro level. I loved watching Earl in the 70's. He is the king of bowling and always will be. We miss you Earl!
