I like to hear this Viens, gentille dame from this Jose Florez as much as from Gedda, Sénéchal. Rockwell Blake and Henry Lagay. And not to forget the one and only David Devries. How lucky we are to be able to listen to all this wonderfull people !
No comparison to Gedda who owns this one. This piece displays Florez' weaknesses: Very little dynamic variations, monotonous colours, small voice lacking warmth and understandably no affinity and true understanding of the French language to really flirt with the music, narrate and live the story. Florez has an excellent way of portraying emotions in the Italian repertoire where authority and clarity is needed, however, here we need different subtle shades and poetry which he cannot deliver.
Perfect!!!! He fits the aria like a glove! I have been waiting for years to hear him sing "Mes amis, écoutez l'histoire" from le postillon de lonjumeau!!!! I live in hope!

I agree with Pollione88. Gedda OWNS this area. I also think Wunderlich's version is better than JDFs..

@dave4128 I second your comments. But don't overlook Michel Sénéchal, who recorded the full opera back about 1960.
