Never got to see this. Been 4 times, but just missed the era of Horizons. Damn it's cool. So long a ride! Love the carousel of progress family near the end. Test Track's fine, but thanks so much for giving us a glimpse of Epcot at its finest. Jules Verne floating in the capsule- bravissimo!
Let me preface this by saying I loved Horizons growing up.
Have you guys forgotten what Walt wanted EPCOT to represent? Progress. A city that was constantly changing and being updated to meet the future head on. Now Disney is doing that with Epcot and everyone hates on them.
As much as I loved the ride, it was dated, and it came to represent what we thought the future would hold more than what it was. A new generation needs new rides that highlight new possibilities.
If they want thrill rides they should make Journey into your Imagination into a flume ride with the original story, bring back World of Motion as a Mr Toads Wild type ride, Make a new Horizons 3D that glides like Soarin with a calm or thrill ending chosen by the guests, a Universe of Energy roller coaster, Keep Spaceship Earth as it and then the guests will be learning without even knowing it. The thrill rides they have now arrant even worth the wait.
@omg122448 I like the idea. I guess it's a good thing I have never been to EPCOT or I'd be pretty angry that most of these rides do not exist anymore. :p
What would be the best time period to visit EPCOT? The mid 90s?
@Luciferminusone I forgot all about them then one day I looked back on some old videos and saw some great old memories. The next time I went to Epcot I was all ready to ride Horizons and Journey into your Imagination. Journey into your Imagination was destroyed and horizons was nowhere to be seen.
@Luciferminusone Back when EPCOT was a series of models and drawings orchestrated by a genius, not a series of numbers on an economic feasibility report.
As much as I love Mission Space, it came at the cost of this beautiful attraction which should have never been lost. I wish Disney had put Mission Space in the old Wonders Of Life building, so we could enjoy it while still keeping this treasure.
The 'old' Epcot was more innovative and futuristic feeling than the 'new' Epcot. They're going backwards and downhill, and have been for a number of years now. They're at fault yes, but the main reason is the fact that the average person is getting dumber and dumber and prefers hard moving thrill rides to rides where they might actually learn something [gasp]. Disney is then just forced to build attractions people will pay money to ride or they'll lose visitors to Universal Studios. :/
I went on this when I was ten in 1998 and I remember it made me sick to my stomache (motion sickness) for a while after, and other members of my family were as well but not as bad. It was mostly the part you see at 5:56 that caused it, I think.
i think this ride is better than mission space because i screamed the whole time i was on it :( 3:15 love that song!!!! it will influence me forever :)
I loved this ride .Great imagination and very relaxing. I most appreciate the artistic aspect of the set design. I am not a fan of the new trend in rides which is just movies played in front of you.( While you spin, or bump along with the movie.)
That was my favorite ride from when I was 2. I remember one day it was randomly open in February 1999 and I think I was 7 at the time. Because of that my memory is still clear. I remember going back in 2001 and looking all over for horizons. When I saw came across the walls that horrible feeling that the ride might be gone came over me.
Oh I wish I could have rode this ride and have remembered it! I was just a tot when this closed... well as always these memories of the ride will live on.... and you know, Walt always said that each park should be changing with its surroundings :)
This was without a doubt my favorite attraction in all of Walt Disney World "back in the day." I think avayatrue was right -- if it were around today folks would complain about it being boring -- but thanks to you we old farts can refresh our cherished memories of this dear departed attraction. Thanks for posting this!
If this ride was still around in it's original form, I think we'd all complain that it was outdated and boring (think Journey Into Imagination), yet we all miss it very much. Funny... We love the future but miss the past. I guess that's the whole point.
The reason that song - "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow" - is on this ride is because Horizons is the "sequel" to the Carousel of Progress - it's the same family, only instead of stopping at the present like the CoP, Horizons follows them into the future.
damn lol this was so freaky cuz in 1997 i was 7 yrs old and watching this make me have so many flash backs........damn lol i remember seeing alot of this stuff when i was a kid but couldn't remember the ride i saw it on
If anyone has any video of Epcot and the Magic kingdom from May, June or July 1997 please let me know if you'd be interested in making a copy of some of it for me. I was there back then but my camera broke.
in a way horizons is still there. In the new spaceship earth ending it has the horizons vibe and the screen is a gorizons thing. i was hoping to see some horizons and dreamfinder leftovers in spaceship earth.
Awesome to see. Loved going on this back when I lived about an hour from Disney.

I don't understand why they took this out when it was the sequel to Carousel of Progress. Seems Walt would have wanted it to stay.
