Wow where can I get one of these? you can create an enormous magnetical field with an engine like that, the powere is in the diamonds which is your exhaust. Think turbo+neodinium, but most of all , think logic.
Methane is a really smooth-burning propellant, I can tell by the sound and exhaust. I think it would be a really good propellant to launch humans, because it is so smooth. As for lifting quality, nothing is better than a bunch of solids strapped to a hydrox stage.
@Puzzoozoo nerva? Methane is a great propellant. It's not the most powerful, but it's a lot easier to handle than hydrogen. Methane won't leak through tank walls like hydrogen.
youll be surprised to know that its maximum speed is quite low, infact its a midrange speed engine.... it simply looks good... if you wanna see a fast jet.. look up Gravitoelectromagnetic toroidal launchers or Bussard ramjets..... apart from warp drives, as fast as they get
Haha did anyone else see the wheels on that thing? Imagine the acceleration you'd get if the rocket station wasn't strapped to the ground. It'd be all the way to the Middle-East by the end of the video.
@A86 NASA originally wanted to use this type of engine on the Orion project, but they reverted to hypergolic propellant due to the infancy of methane engines.
Isn't the whole point of this engine for the Mars Express manned flight?
Where the plan is to send an automated factory to Mars ahead of a manned mission, it will make methane from CO2 in the martian atmosphere for the return journey.
No. The point is to be able to use the methane from the atmosphere of other planets or moons as fuel. It was designed to be used on unmanned flights and use the fuel to return.
Methane cannot be made from CO2. Methane is CH4. There is no hydrogen in carbon dioxide.
If you have a subbie, hook it up.

Here comes the space age, here comes freedom. The ocean has no gov't, space has no gov't. The Final Frontier will be the Free Frontier.
Kids used to dream about going into space, now it is possible and likely that todays children will experience zero-G and the vastness of space.

I don't know how practical this thing is yet but it would be awesome if the Orion spacecraft's main engine was like that.

It uses less fuel than a normal rocket engine, while producing more thrust.

Methane can come from 2 things on our planet.
1: Hygrogen from water.

But there may be other sources of methane, like volcanos

I wonder if methane could replace lH2 for many upper stage applications since it's easier to handle but still offers high ISP.
Also methane engines, fuel tanks, and turbo pumps are a lot cheaper to build.
