So you still would have to change your oil every once in a while, same with trans fluid, all this is is an alternate fuel. MUCH cheaper at that.. Does this work with V8 motors? Or just diesel?

@dbrandinni Biodiesel only works in a diesel engine. If you put it in a gasoline engine it will kill it. And what you are talking about is called black diesel and from what I have read about it, it only works on diesels that don't have sensors in the fuel system (the sensors must see through the fuel). It is also not known if using black diesel can harm your engine or fuel system.

Caution, methanol is really really deadly but if you just touched it at a minimum amount:

get wasted! the ethanol binds better to the same places the methanol does and you get better! (but better see a doctor)

@circusboy90210 When oil is heated, it releases Free Fatty Acids (FFAs) ....... These FFAs have to be neutralized by the sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide (both strong bases). The longer the oil has been heated and the higher the temperature, the more base you will need to neutralize these acidic components called FFAs........ Of course, new vegetable oil is also heated during the process of making bio diesel which is why lye or KOH is required. Hope this helps....... BE SAFE!!!!!!!!

@circusboy90210 This 40 grams of lye is equal to one Mole (A chemical unit of measurement)...... so you will have one molar (or one mole per liter) lye solution in the one liter bottle. At this point, you have your beaker filled to the 100 ml mark with hot, filtered oil (about 130 Fahrenheit). You will also need to add a few drops of indicator (phenolphthalein) to the 100 ml of oil. This will turn pink after the acidic oil has been neutralized through titration.

@circusboy90210 So, now that you have everything set up, you will need to slowly pour you 1 molar lye solution into a burette tube to the 20 ml mark and position the 100 ml beaker of oil and phenolphthalein on top of a magnetic stirrer directly under the burette tube. It is important that the oil is constantly being stirred and kept hot or you may get false calculations. It is also important that everything be EXACT!!! Ok, so you are ready to perform the titration now.

@circusboy90210 Open the valve on the burette and let the lye solution drip into the oil. When the solution begins to turn pink, turn the valve to a slow drip. You will see the pink go away but come back again shortly........... When the solution turns pink and stays pink, you have successfully completed titration. If the solution is a dark pink, you have gone too far! (you have added too much lye solution) So stop AS SOON AS YOU SEE PINK THAT DOES NOT GO AWAY!

@circusboy90210 It is best to do this titration 3 or more times and average the results. So here's what you need to do after titration is complete: look at the burrett tube. Let's say that the tube was filled to 20 ml and you now have only 10 ml........... this means that you only needed 10 ml of lye to neutralize 100 ml of oil. Multiply the 100 ml of oil by 10 to get 1000 ml. 1000 ml = 1 Liter. Do the same with the lye solution used. 10 ml x 10 = 100 ml of lye solution and convert to liter

@circusboy90210 If you can't understand, then you probably shouldn't even try to produce bio diesel. I answered your question in pretty much the simplest terms possible. I am a chemical engineering major doing research in alternative fuels and petroleum. I assure you that what I explained has a lot to do with FFAs...... Just do us both a favor and please educate yourself a little before trying this.

@circusboy90210 I'm pretty sure that if this place that you speak of is successful, they have chemical engineers like myself (Soon to be) and chemists that do exactly what I just explained to you. I have toured 5 different petroleum plants and 2 bio diesel plants. I have worked in these plants on Co Op and internships and have spoken with / worked with the engineers who produce these fuels. So tell me about how this facility works that you know so much about.

@circusboy90210 Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide are both suitable for use. These two bases are what are known as 'Strong Bases'. Other bases just don't work as well (if at all). All vegetable oils (mainly used oils) do have Free Fatty acids and Trans fatty acids. Along with triglycerides. If you were to use litmus paper to check the pH of vegetable oil, you would see that it is acidic. Everything has to be neutral to make bio diesel. Free Fatty Acids **** Google it.

Do you know what a gram, liter, milliliter and mole are? Have you ever even heard of methanol or lye? Did you ever even take chemistry in high school? lol

@circusboy90210 Now this is why we mixed 40 grams (1 mole) of lye in one liter (1 molar) ........... We have 100 ml of lye solution that needs to be converted to grams of pure lye. To convert ml to Liters, divide ml by 1000. That will give us .1 liter of 1 molar lye solution. Since we no that 1 liter of solution has 40 grams of lye and we only need .1 or 1/10 liter to neutralize 1 whole liter of oil, we multiply 40 by .1 and this tells us to use 4 grams of pure lye for every liter of oil.

@circusboy90210 In reality, you will probably use about 10 grams of lye per 1 liter of oil. It fluctuates on every batch though........ So you'll have to titrate for every batch of oil. If you use too much lye you will just get a lot of soap with your bio diesel. You'll just have to filter that out and it cuts down on the amount of diesel you get. If you don't add enough lye, you will have a fuel that has an extremely high point of spontaneous combustion. This means a low quality fuel.

@circusboy90210 Oh, I forgot to mention one thing........... Make sure you check the oil for moisture content before using it. If there is any moisture, you will want to boil the oil until there is no water left. This, of course is after you have filtered it. You will want to add your lye into your methyl alcohol (methanol) first and then slowly mix it in with your hot oil at about 130 Fahrenheit (54-55 Celsius) You need about 200 ml of methanol for every 1 liter of oil used.

@ryanhall2013 Usually, only used oil will have high FFA content. The more FFAs present, the more acidic the oil is. The more acidic the oil, the more lye you need to neutralize it. Titration is the process used to figure how much lye you need. You will need to get a bottle that is exactly one liter, a burret tube with stand, a magnetic stirrer/ hot plate and an accurate digital scale. You will need to mix exactly 40 grams into a 1 liter solution of cold water. (distilled water is best)
