Oh no - he was. This is often mentioned by people who knew and loved him. Kathy Sprinkle knew him very well - she spoke at about a million of the Memorials for Rich. They were very close. So yeah - i fully believe her. He had a side that contained a melancholy - most poets do. Pick up "Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven" by James Bryan Smith for more good info about RWM!! Quite a good book, i think you'll enjoy it!
