  • one of my fav 5440 tunes along with casual viewing, these guys rock

  • Just put on a music festival and we got 54-40 to headline. i have to say I wasn't looking forward to them....but I am a new fan. They put on a wicked show and just prove that Canadian music is really some of the best!

  • Great song, proabably one of 54-40's most underrated.

  • 2005 ..54-40 headlined night two of the 11th Annual Geraldton Jamboree at McLeod Provincial Park on Highway 11 in Northern Ontario. Also attending was Fefe Dobson, Streetheart, Sass Jordan amung others. Its was a fantastic 3-day music fest. They have a great Canadian sound. ' Baby Ran' will always belong in my road trip playlist. I know they'll get into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame soon enough.

  • @EuphoricNightmare Man, I would have loved to see that. Sounds like a great time.

  • Can someone PLS get this track on to YouTube in a decent format????

    Please

    Thanks T

  • @nutreez that would be awesome!

  • @MrKushandBongrips420 Somebody has to have a better version of this great song....Pls!!!!!!

  • Love this one!

  • why is it in mono ????

  • Haven't heard this one in awhile then heard it on Jack, checked for it on you tube, great song and musicality.

  • CANADIAN ROCK BANDS NEVER GET THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE. ONE OF THE BEST CLASSIC ROCK BANDS OUT THERE!

  • I've never been a huge fan of these guys but this song is an absolute killer.

  • Concerning Canadian bands, 54-40 is right up there with Kim Mitchell, Prism, Rush, and so on.

  • @DaMarcus210 Yes and others!

  • definately a top ten canadian band

  • I think this song in another one that captures to emotive power of RNR at its best. Epitomizes it, tho others do too. The lyrics just coast & soar on the sound. This energy keeps resurfacing w many bands ,songs, @ different places & times. But, it always seems to broadcast the same kind of mighty, inner energy : The ability to convey emotion w great power, force, energy, & elegance, & cool grace.

    What RNR is all about.

  • i think baby ran away due to the brutal audio quality of this great tune!

  • @EssiacHempLaetrile lol, funny!

  • Flipped out - heard it only once or twice in '86. THIS is the distilled essence of what RNR should sound like....the ENERGY good RNR should sweep your head with...lightning,lightning re-hittin me....brilliant ,flashing treble-spiked chordal guitars....echoing harmonies...dreamworld + POWER....garage, folk rock & that bright, glittering dark psychedelia, the way they stage it....Magick....the song stayed in my head in spite of 1-2 listens. The test of great RNR.

  • This is coming from a rap fan, but this song has a seriously sick flow to it.

    54-40 - Yes

    Nickelback - No

  • fix the fiken audeo it ruins the whole thing

  • Does anybody have the video for "Walk In Line" ?

I love that tune, and it is nowhere to be found here. : (

  • Great Band! Why the name? Something to do with the fishing borders on the west coast?

  • back on the british columbia and oregon territory dispute the minister of canada, and the president of the states wanted two different border places, i BELIEVE im not sure though, that the states wanted it to be on the 54th parallel and 40 degrees to the north of that, and the american slogan for that specific debate wasss

    54-40 or fight.

  • close to that anyway, my grade 10 socials is a bit off xD

  • @Shisenshi you are correct, sir.

  • I always thought of 54-40 as the Tragically Hip of BC. That's a good thing.

  • (cont.)...and it doesn't even compare to what so-called "rap moguls" have done in the last

15 years, "sampling" hooks and melodies note-for-note and in some cases, stealing entire original compositions and song structures.

  • It seems these guys are taking a heap of flak for ripping off a long list of artists/bands, but truthfully, what they're doing bears little difference to anything else out there. It really isn't much different than what bands like DRAGONS and Editors have done in terms of wearing influences on their sleeves, it isn't nearly as bad as "Ice, Ice, Baby" or "Bittersweet Symphony", where the basic melody is stolen outright...(continued^^)

  • @cmbradfordart the hip and 54-40 have similar vocals and all around sound. Both are great bands. the hips new stuff kinda sounds like shit but their first few albums were great. 54-40 has always been one of my fav rock bands. black crowes have always been up there too. u should check out some of there acoustic live shows on here. they do an awesome version of remedy.

  • There's a similarity, no doubt, but I think labeling it a blatant ripoff is an overstatement.

  • One of the best performance videos ever!

  • Listen to the song "I Wanna Kill" by the Crocodiles and tell me I'm not crazy...it sounds like they totally ripped off Baby Ran for a major portion of the song.

  • @fmrc69

    You're crazy.

Just kidding. But I don't hear it, and I doubt the Crocodiles guys have ever heard "Baby Ran". They are more into ripping off JAMC, Suicide, and Spacemen 3.

They are both good songs, though.

  • @fmrc69 You're right!

  • None of the songs have a million views ? WTF !!! A good band like them ...We need to support our talent a whole lot better Canadian people .

  • Alrights liked this song after years and years of listening to my parents music

  • ***Always, my bad

  • ....loved this band but they had terrible reps in the 80's......trust me ....the vid for one gun...explains this comment...

  • they are at Port Colborne,

..Canal Days july 31,2009, friday night,.. free

    54-40 rocks

  • it was an incredible show!

  • I get to see them again on Friday, at the Red River Ex(Winnipeg)....for $8 !!!! just saw the Watchmen on Tuesday! same Gig,same price! sweet week

  • Thank god for college radio & some satellite stations. Regular BS radio won't touch it...Thank god for my (near complete collection) and iPod as well...my 54-40 fix is always close @ hand!

  • ....If you're in the U.S. Canadian classic rock stations love 54-40. ;)

  • I wore this album out when it came out. Great sound and great voice.

  • Always felt 54-40 should have had all the success that the Tragically Hip enjoys. I think they've been playing longer than that Kingston band.

  • 54-40 will be playing the Port Credit Waterfront Festival on Sat June 20th.

As an added bonus, the bill also contains The Skydiggers and The Spoons. Actually the festival should be pretty good this year, Sam Roberts plays the Friday night and I think the pass for all three days is only $25.00.

I'm sure it will bring back memories of 54-40 at the old Ontario Place Amphitheater with the rotating stage.

  • yay!

there show is 2moro night! :D:D

    cant wait!!

  • I wish the audio on this vid could be fixed. Its all off to the left for me.

  • Yes, I agree. The sound is all left speaker.

  • 54-40 is under-rated but they do fine. The members of the band are doing what they love when they want to do it. I heard they have a decent following in Asia and Europe and that's why tours in Canada are far and in between. It's funny how the best things are overlooked when they're in your own back yard. This song sounds great every time I hear it.

  • Saw them in '88 at Call the Office in London, ON. Great show. Man, I'm getting old. :-)

  • anybody that says that this is not one of the most under rated canadian bands should give their heads a shake 'cause i saw them at Dusty's Bar and Grill in Whistler and they were absolutley awesome no doubt about it

  • Definitely have to agree.

  • @Ddub0316 absolutely love that comment couldnt agree more!

  • why did when we tried to play baby ran we cant log in how to fix that???

  • Anybody who wants to hear another excellent canadian band who never broke through the mainstream, should look into Strobic Axe. They were a band from my hometown of Peterborough Ontario, and were one of the great bands of the eighties. I believe they will see a revival one day. Look for them on myspace. You wont regret it

  • I remember this song like it was yesterday. It is scary as hell that its been 22 years since I first heard this song...

  • How bad do you think I feel, PsychoPunk1965?

I only discovered them yesterday when I (by chance)downloaded 'Ocean Pearl' on Limewire.

They've been around so long and I'd never heard of them. (I feel good, really, to have discovered them.)

They got NO airplay on Australian radio, or of they did, I never heard it.

Praise the internet! and you don't have to face east because it's everywhere.

  • wtw88 im loving that east comment, and here in canada they arent really that big. glad to hear u enjoy it.

  • Thanks and I'd love to come to Canada some day.

  • dont hear them here in the states either unless i listen to fm96 out of toronto which comes in great across the lake

  • Your post could be turned into a great song - "Comes in great across the lake" I really like that.

  • saw them when they came to halifax a couple of time, always was a fan... its too bad most bands don't come east of Montreal though

  • This song remains one of my all time faves. I've lived it more than once.

  • I like 54-40 a lot but I didn't know Nirvana covered one of their songs.

    What song did Nirvana cover?

  • Nirvana covered a 54-40 song??? I never heard that...

  • @tim5440 yeah dude i never heard that either

  • @tim5440 hootie and the blowfish covered I go blind

  • @tim5440 no it was i go blind,, my bad

  • People keep saying they never made it, bullcrap, they had success, but their Canadian, that's what makes them so good, so unique, if the music is great it seeps through, and this band does. When you got covers of them by Hootie and Kurt Cobain credits them as a major influence you know you got something, the stuff is timeless

  • I saw them at the Kee to Bala in Muskoka a few times. A band that was too underrated.

  • This band should have made it. I listened to this album over and over. But when all is said, they had as much chance of cracking the US market, as the Sabres do of winning a cup

  • Aww- I love the Sabres, but I can commiserate

  • My veins run Sabre blue, but the players they lost, I think its too much. No leadership, no scoring. I guess its too many years of disappointment.

  • 1986 - I bought this as a 45! I just remember playing it nonstop on my player, when I should have been trying to figure out where I wanted to go after high school!

  • I was first introduced to these guys on "Toronto Rocks" on CITYTV with host (and part-time Sears catolouge model) Brad Giffen. What ever happened to Brad, is he still modelling "Fruit of the Looms?

  • there are sooo many Canadian artists that went unoticed, so many who never had the machine behind them . who knows maybe it would of ruined them . we had to work harder for the world to notice. a hunger i guess that allways existed in the music. made it amazing. Refugee, 5440,prism,tragically hip, tons of them never had the american sucess!

  • this was 1st song i ever heard , made me a huge fan!!!!!!!

  • You all ask, "why does this great band not make it big." answer is simple. your all fagets. N SYNC sells 500 billion copies. That is you cretins buying that sh it. and not buying this. BASTARDS.

  • FRIKEN LOVE THSE ASSHOLES

  • damn......haven't seen this video since the late 80's on MTV 120 minutes.....

    hell yeah!!!!

  • OMG, at 3:21 you see one of the guitarists pedals, a digitech overdrive unit that I still own, cool. ;)

  • good classic 80s hard Canadian rock. Has it been 20 already? WOW. I have seen this band often at the KEE to Bala in Muskoka Ontario. Great venue

  • that is the mother fuckin coolest shit i ever heard.

  • Such a great f'ing song. Baby ran, she ran away. Why she ran I got to say I'm lonesome all the time."

  • thanks tim ..saw them in Whitehorse,Yukon great show

  • i use to have this on vinyl took me awhile to find it too anyway its a great fuckin song i agree hootie should have never covered i go blind

  • Hey you CANUKS... I watched Much all the time when I was a kid. (thank god, turned me on to the Rheostatics et al.) I got 54-40's Much music special on tape somewhere... Yep they show the Hip but only for half the song. It was a good show though... I got now way to port it to youtube (its on VHS)...

  • I NEED to see this!! Any way you can make a copy and send it my way??? I will post it on youtube! :)

  • I looked everywhere for this videotape and I cannot find it :(

  • @tim5440 I did a Google search. It was shown on the Much Music 54-40 10th Anniversary special in '92. Man that clip is harder to get than Gord doing Hallelujah! :-)

  • @dwarfish Dude! I can capture VHS to digital. If you live in the WNY area!

  • wow a great 80s tune.i loved this song.cant believe someone has this thanks

  • Great Song. I remember seeing these guys at Call the Office in London in '88. BTW Much Music had a 54.40 special or a Tragically Hip special in the early '90's were The Hip did a Baby Ran cover. If anyone has it pleeeeas post!

  • damn!! For sure! I would LOVE to see that. I'll ask one of the guys from the hip next time I see them...

  • @Canuckastan Saw that show as well... amazing!

  • Great Song! Saw these guys a few times. Most memorable was at Call The Office in London.

  • BTW...in the early '90's Much Music either had a 54.40 special or a Tragically Hip special. In it The Hip did a Baby Ran cover. If anyone has copy of that pleeeeeze post!

  • Fantastic Song! I must have seen these guys a dozen times over the years. You can lump 54.40 with Sloan, The Hip, Grapes of Wrath, Big Sugar and a plethora of other quality bands that never caught on down south. And that is a crying shame!

  • thanx for this... great album...i wish hootie and the blowfish never covered "i go blind"

  • Saw these guys in Point Roberts with the Black Star girls....Really Fun Night.

  • i remember playing this song over and over and over in the 80's... remember when bands like this just used to rock... Where are bands like that now?

  • Heck yes. After the years of The Triumphs and The April Wines and The Sagas and and and Canada when on a huge roll rock musically. I didn't love any of the (then) new breed more than 54-40.

  • another great video of a song that mtv hardly ever played back in the 80's...back when mtv was ruining music for us all

  • Great song! I think I wore out this track on my lp back in 86
