Just put on a music festival and we got 54-40 to headline. i have to say I wasn't looking forward to them....but I am a new fan. They put on a wicked show and just prove that Canadian music is really some of the best!
2005 ..54-40 headlined night two of the 11th Annual Geraldton Jamboree at McLeod Provincial Park on Highway 11 in Northern Ontario. Also attending was Fefe Dobson, Streetheart, Sass Jordan amung others. Its was a fantastic 3-day music fest. They have a great Canadian sound. ' Baby Ran' will always belong in my road trip playlist. I know they'll get into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame soon enough.
I think this song in another one that captures to emotive power of RNR at its best. Epitomizes it, tho others do too. The lyrics just coast & soar on the sound. This energy keeps resurfacing w many bands ,songs, @ different places & times. But, it always seems to broadcast the same kind of mighty, inner energy : The ability to convey emotion w great power, force, energy, & elegance, & cool grace.
Flipped out - heard it only once or twice in '86. THIS is the distilled essence of what RNR should sound like....the ENERGY good RNR should sweep your head with...lightning,lightning re-hittin me....brilliant ,flashing treble-spiked chordal guitars....echoing harmonies...dreamworld + POWER....garage, folk rock & that bright, glittering dark psychedelia, the way they stage it....Magick....the song stayed in my head in spite of 1-2 listens. The test of great RNR.
back on the british columbia and oregon territory dispute the minister of canada, and the president of the states wanted two different border places, i BELIEVE im not sure though, that the states wanted it to be on the 54th parallel and 40 degrees to the north of that, and the american slogan for that specific debate wasss
It seems these guys are taking a heap of flak for ripping off a long list of artists/bands, but truthfully, what they're doing bears little difference to anything else out there. It really isn't much different than what bands like DRAGONS and Editors have done in terms of wearing influences on their sleeves, it isn't nearly as bad as "Ice, Ice, Baby" or "Bittersweet Symphony", where the basic melody is stolen outright...(continued^^)
@cmbradfordart the hip and 54-40 have similar vocals and all around sound. Both are great bands. the hips new stuff kinda sounds like shit but their first few albums were great. 54-40 has always been one of my fav rock bands. black crowes have always been up there too. u should check out some of there acoustic live shows on here. they do an awesome version of remedy.
Listen to the song "I Wanna Kill" by the Crocodiles and tell me I'm not crazy...it sounds like they totally ripped off Baby Ran for a major portion of the song.
Just kidding. But I don't hear it, and I doubt the Crocodiles guys have ever heard "Baby Ran". They are more into ripping off JAMC, Suicide, and Spacemen 3.
Thank god for college radio & some satellite stations. Regular BS radio won't touch it...Thank god for my (near complete collection) and iPod as well...my 54-40 fix is always close @ hand!
54-40 will be playing the Port Credit Waterfront Festival on Sat June 20th.
As an added bonus, the bill also contains The Skydiggers and The Spoons. Actually the festival should be pretty good this year, Sam Roberts plays the Friday night and I think the pass for all three days is only $25.00.
I'm sure it will bring back memories of 54-40 at the old Ontario Place Amphitheater with the rotating stage.
54-40 is under-rated but they do fine. The members of the band are doing what they love when they want to do it. I heard they have a decent following in Asia and Europe and that's why tours in Canada are far and in between. It's funny how the best things are overlooked when they're in your own back yard. This song sounds great every time I hear it.
anybody that says that this is not one of the most under rated canadian bands should give their heads a shake 'cause i saw them at Dusty's Bar and Grill in Whistler and they were absolutley awesome no doubt about it
Anybody who wants to hear another excellent canadian band who never broke through the mainstream, should look into Strobic Axe. They were a band from my hometown of Peterborough Ontario, and were one of the great bands of the eighties. I believe they will see a revival one day. Look for them on myspace. You wont regret it
People keep saying they never made it, bullcrap, they had success, but their Canadian, that's what makes them so good, so unique, if the music is great it seeps through, and this band does. When you got covers of them by Hootie and Kurt Cobain credits them as a major influence you know you got something, the stuff is timeless
This band should have made it. I listened to this album over and over. But when all is said, they had as much chance of cracking the US market, as the Sabres do of winning a cup
1986 - I bought this as a 45! I just remember playing it nonstop on my player, when I should have been trying to figure out where I wanted to go after high school!
I was first introduced to these guys on "Toronto Rocks" on CITYTV with host (and part-time Sears catolouge model) Brad Giffen. What ever happened to Brad, is he still modelling "Fruit of the Looms?
there are sooo many Canadian artists that went unoticed, so many who never had the machine behind them . who knows maybe it would of ruined them . we had to work harder for the world to notice. a hunger i guess that allways existed in the music. made it amazing. @tim5440 I did a Google search. It was shown on the Much Music 54-40 10th Anniversary special in '92. Man that clip is harder to get than Gord doing Hallelujah! :-)
Great Song. I remember seeing these guys at Call the Office in London in '88. BTW Much Music had a 54.40 special or a Tragically Hip special in the early '90's were The Hip did a Baby Ran cover. If anyone has it pleeeeas post!

15 years, "sampling" hooks and melodies note-for-note and in some cases, stealing entire original compositions and song structures.

I only discovered them yesterday when I (by chance)downloaded 'Ocean Pearl' on Limewire.
