If you get all the letters delivered you get a Tintabalum (or however it is spelled)

You get HP while walking (relic)

You have to spend a while doing it as each letter is 500 GP (mail it at the house to the right) and then you have to sleep (100GP?) at the inn. Sleeping at the free bed in the relic house does not trigger the next letter.

Do it many times and you get a good relic for low-level runs.

To be fair, Gau (I've always pronounced it like "gow," but "go" or "go-ooh" make more sense with Japanese pronunciation I guess) has more importance than the optional characters, though the 2 that are actually useful are more interesting. Actually the first thing I do in Chrono Trigger is change the window from the gray one to the green one because the grey one looks so weird with white letters, that and that particular style reminds me of Seiken Densetsu 3.

If I remember correctly, Cyan continues sending letters after the soldier dies. If you meet up with Lola in the World of Ruin with Cyan I think you get a sword for him after a scene. I'm not 100% on that though.
