  • best performance ever!

P.S. the chords are afraid of Reiner

  • SPEED is of the essence here . . . amazing virtuosity all around!

  • wow, this song is sooo easy, im playing at regular speed in my 7th grade class

  • im playing this now and im a freshman

  • My father performed in the CSO. This is an awesome song.

  • I came for the music but I stayed for the video. There's something extremely comical about this. The same cat over and over and over again in different positions, looking always staid. The music's majestic and so out of place. Jesus, this is entertaiment. And then "--and look at my Granite videos. They are full of Granite!" That's where I cracked. Try 'n find the sarcasm.

  • I'm glad that you got the whole Granite thing... :)

  • Yeah. That's a golden one.

  • i don't like playing this song except for the part at 1:15 viola power!

  • this song is awesome, but playing this for our district competition will be the death of me.

  • Ugh we have to play this now, and It's % pages long!!

  • **5

  • I have to play this for District Orchestra.

    Half note=180

  • I had to play it too back in my freshman year of high school...on double bass :)

  • You played this at your freshman year?! I have o play this for Junior District and I'm only in 7th grade

  • It's... edited, right? :)

  • It should be, I'm in 9th grade, and I think it was shorter, it was like 5 pages long.

  • the version we played was the original - and playing those first few bars on the double bass, at the original tempo, is no easy task - really tempting to air bow that passage haha

But yeah, that was my freshman year :)

  • oh okay

  • i had to play it for district orchestra too

    im in district 12; violin

  • We're playing this song at my school as well. We're playing it at half=135. It's not exactly easy, but it's fun regardless.

  • Love this piece!

  • my high school orchestra auditions for chamber is this piece.

haha dude its murder on my small hands.

  • I can play it it is so much fun not not at 135 and Pesto lol

  • Pesto? Yum.

  • I'm in middle school and i'm going to have to play this. lol.

  • omfg our highschool orcestra is gonna play this....hopefully not as fast hahaha

  • us 2! our orchestra final was to play measures 1-21 solo. that was hard, especially at my speed. its so easy to rush.

still, the beginning is just scales, so its not that hard.

  • Same here...except I think we're almost going this fast (quarter = 150-something) o.O

  • quarter=150-something is actually really slo for this song o.o

  • i dont get the cat...

  • They're pictures... they're to keep viewers entertained. :)

  • Cats are very entertaining. DUH.

  • amazing!

the band transcription has an insane euphonium part lol

  • no kidding, its an audition excerpt for the US Navy Band, and my teacher is having me practice it as if I were auditioning for that band to have "real life experience"

  • Forget the kitty!! This performance is positively superb and doesn't need anything else to go with it!! Six stars, not just five!!!

The pity is that this performance wasn't, and couldn't be, videorecorded - videotape hadn't even been invented until after Fritz Reiner's departure, while using film would likely have been more expensive than what people would have thought appropriate. Sad, because the Chicago Symphony musicians play "like gods" on this recording!!!! Wonderful music-making!!!

  • Thanks! It is quite a pity, but we'll enjoy what we have. :)

  • this is great, but where in the world is the cake?!!? Whaaaaat!?! I cant believe you didnt put it in there ;-;

  • Your comment is a waste of space. If you really want to talk about cake, go stuff your face elsewhere. Otherwise, you really need to get a life.

  • Gorgeous cat, looks like a black panther. Beautiful, such green eyes. I love cats.

  • the music is great but where is the cake?

  • What are you talking about? What cake?

  • Always a lie. ALWAYS.

  • Yeah. I know. I blocked him. XD

  • Phenomenally brilliant orchestral playing and great conducting make this the best performance of this magnificent overture ever captured; many thanks for sharing this with the world.
