I'm going to see Hough play this very concerto on 3/23/2012. I'm incredibly excited to see such an amazing pianist play live one of the most difficult concertos in the repertoire. I'm sure it will be exhilirating!!!
Where have I been all my piano listening life! What power and ownership! What I am about to ask you is with all due respect to him. Have any of you sensed that Stephen Hough, while playing this piece in a dazzling manner, could have added in instances where he could have lowered the intensity - then after some controlled diminishing, unleashed himself again?
I have been enthralled with Stephen Hough since 1987 when I purchased a CD of his playing a Hummel piano concerto. I was so impressed with his virtuosity and musicality. Later performances only got better. Now, when he plays, he plays with an emotional, physical, artistic, and intellectual power that one rarely observes. I love to hear him play, and almost wish for a false note or two to convince me that he's human! Oops, just heard a slight muddle. Thank goodness, he's not from Mars!
I just noticed I commented this video around 1 year ago... Well, I re-discovered it. I have to add that in particular the beggining is absolutely stunning. How does he manage to get such clear, piano, yet sure sound? Seriously, this is a superb perfomance!
I agree Blues, it's a good performance. About the pure/clear sound, imagine listening this life!! without all electronic conversion trought microphones+your speakers!!! must be epic.
Depends on the acoustics, though. Sometimes you'll sit far enough from the piano or something, the sound won't reverberate, and the piano will end up sounding kinda percussive and "thin", and you start wishing this was a high-quality recording with Dolby Surround or something :D
Absolutely killing. Of all the 3rd Movements I've heard no one has pulled the notes so crisply as Hough, he doesn't allow Romantic ideas to mesh-up this movement.
What do you propose to have on the walls? Pretty pictures? Things like that will distract the audience from the music and thereby miss the whole point of the concert.
the stages I've been to usually have wooden walls to at least match the floor.
besides lets get realistic, without idealism, i can focus on music in my room and space, but live when i watch the orchestra, u only get to lsn to the music once and u cant repeat any arts
you will get distracted eventually, either by smn on stage, instrument, conductor, parts u like, (STAGE), etc...i don't think we shud ignore this :)
Very good performance indeed. I envy him for being able to play Rach 3. Anyway, he does seem kinda uncomfortable on some parts (from 2:50 to 3:08, for example). Although I realise those are parts which carry a lot of emotional and musical tension, his left hand (mostly) should be smoother in the jumps between the keys... It provides a different approach to the music character itself!
the only person that really looks at the conductor is the pianist the rset of the orchestra looks at the music only when they dont do they look at the conductor

Its unfortunate that the Orchestra isnt better on this recording. Its like hes a race horse trying to drag them alone through the movement
