WHAT A MASSIVE TALENT. THE MORE I WATCH HER EARLY SOLO YEARS, THE MORE I THINK SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE GREATEST ENTERTAINERS EVER
She and Johnny both flew on the same flight out of Dallas as me back in the 90's. Probably one of the kindest ladies I've ever met. Everything about her was kind and genuine. And her smile was contagious! :)
You've gotta love June such a wonderful person always made to play the fool cause folks tought her sisters' voices were prettier. But we all know better than that!
Amazing. We lived about 6 miles from their home in Hendersonville, TN. My wife worked at the local JoAnn craft store and June would come in and shop every now and then. She was such a nice lady with true class.
I've come to appreciate country western/rock with the help of Jerry Lee Lewis, June, and Johnny, Roy Orbison, etc. It's allowed me to see the very real and necessary connection between folk, country, and rock, and even jazz. It makes me feel more connected to those I feel very different from--and that's something, isn't it?.
She's saying that she likes singing this song; but the only problem is that the song doesn't have any kind of pause for breath (hence the no swallerin' place). And she can do a lot of crazy things (like kiss, or talk with Cracker Jacks in her mouth) but the song's too hard for her to sing. It's just trying to be silly and ironic.
'No swallowing' 'Coming up for air' What is she talking about anyway??? This here-hear is a SONG about the SONG itself which She just sings and sings and sings and She can not catch a breath between all the singin' She Swallers First and Then sings about it. Pretty Obviously Way-Too-Existential For A Country and Western Twanger Who is Obviously TOO Pretty Why I DON' T Twang Like KAFKA Ray Johnson June Carter Quarter for your thoughts club.... (swaller a quarter for that Doll, er...)
I feel pretty much the same. However, I always liked the Carter Family; especially so once I learned that Old man Carter, A.P., apparently didn't have a racist bone in his body. His early partner, and a big influence on the Carter's (especially Mother Maybelle's) music was a black man named Esley Riddle. And, that was at a time when it wasn't legal for a black man and a white man to shake hands in the south.
Close your eyes. June here sounds remarkably like Elly May out of the Beverly Hillbillies, which came along later. So this is where Elly (actress Donna Douglas) - or was it her producer - plagiarised her TV show accent from ! No doubt about it - young June sure was a mighty perty, perky country gal - as this footage demonstrates so well. Johnny Cash sure was a very lucky man to persist in courting her and eventually winning her heart. Great footage !! Thank You MegasaurusRex 101 !!
elly didnt plagiarize it too far, cause she was from the deep south as well, pride, LA....you dont have to fake what comes naturally, and june carter didnt talk that thick off air, it was all part of her act and charm she put on. but yeah i agree they sound a lot alike.
I love June Carter, she reminds me of my grandmother. When she was younger she looked just like June Carter. The only difference is that my grandmother smelled like feminine deodorant spray all the time.
I feel like you are making fun of these lovely ladies by comparing their clothing to the FLDS ladies. The FLDS ladies would never wear such a lowcut frock. I think June and the other ladies look feminine and beautiful, and they sing real pretty, too. This video has funny jokes and good singing and dancing. I love it.
i think you mean june carter and johnny cash i can sing this song with her it's not that hard just take a swaller before you get started and a big breath in
man the girl's got some pipes couldnt sing that song even if i tried cause it aint got no swallerin place-thats probably the only part i could sing lol
this northern boy loves june and john carter cash! What a cool couple with so much talent.I tried to sing along with this song but june is right ,there aint no swallerin place haha lol.
LOL, she actually used to have this trick where she could move her stomach anywhere she wanted it to go . . . but in the case of this song I think it was just more lung power. Try singing along with her, it's freakin' impossible, lol.
What a fun video! Now you know why very few performers (including the talented Reese Witherspoon) have ever attempted to sing "No Swallerin' Place". Thanks Meg.

I don't like country songs that much, but I love to watch the past. Many things that we see today came from those musics and shows from that time.
