Cool ship. Maybe Thales Netherlands could build some interactive radar application. So those corvettes would be a able to use our (400/1000 km) radar capicity. With a goalkeepers placed on them, European countries become the strongest force ever.
@2canines It's a fine radar, but Thales is years ahead of Aegis (Lockheed Martin) also that Sea Giraffe. This moment we're building that European rocketshield. Dutch frigates will get 2000 km radars that also are able to spot stealthy objects like the F22, F118, JSF, J20 etc. Probably all ships need to be connected with our radars. When there's an incoming missile it needs to be taken down. The only way that can be done, is when other ships radars are interacting with ours.

Skjold er primært laget for krigføring langs kysten og i fjordene. Når det kommer til ildkraft er ikke Visby underlegen, hva får deg til å tro det? Visby har 8 Rbs15, Skjold har 8 nsm. Visby har 1 57mm bofors, Skjold har en 76mm Ota Breda, Visby har 4 x 400mm torpedo (45 torp) samt miner. Skjold derimot har mistral anti air, samt sea protector.

Bojerud har format SD:s försvarspolitik. 14,5 miljarder mer mot nuvarande 30 milj. Det mesta ska gå till utbyggnad av förband, fler flygtimmar för piloter och mer materielanskaffning.
Om det nu skulle kunna krypa upp någon mindre vänligt lagd nation mot östersjön så tror jag sverige och finland kanske skulle ha en chans att övertyga dem att vända

Sweden should take two Visbys and...join them together!..creating a catamaran! That will be amazing!
Advantages:
-1100-1200t of weight;
-same crew number;
-almost the same "island" with a bigger heli hangar;
-more space for: two helicopters-transport and attack/support (Bell UH-1Y Huey and Bell AZ-10 Cobra with a common 84% components including engines/cockpit avionics and the 4 bladed main rotor folding system!), bigger landing deck, internal missle pods on the port and starboard bows!
That is one mean looking ship! But the wake looks like it's going to be a problem.
I've seen photos of the ocean taking by satellite and you can always spot a ship by it's wake, and it's very surprising how the "V" shaped bow wave extends outward for many miles, The Visby may be invisible to radar but I'm afraid it still can't hide like a submarine can.
For a naval craft it is moving on. It's got to be a 1st class ship. No doubt that the arsenal inside equals the speed of the vessel. Swedish littoral subs are the best in the world. I red of exercise with a US naval war game the Swedish Unterseeboat could not be found in the exercise. The US Navy asked Sweden to allow a year long testing to find the real capability of these UBoats. They are able to spend up to 2 months submerged. Even nuclear Uboats have to come up for food, air, & water.
@nor888vast695 A Nuclear sub can stay submerged for a year. doesn't have to come up for air. Its a sub designed to hide nuclear weapon. Those Uboats are ship hunters.
All helicopters in the armed forces belong to the air force, but some of our ships can carry helicopters.
For example in a few months we are sending the minelayer HMS Carlskrona to take part in Operation Atalanta and the ship is supposed to be carrying an Augusta A109.

Dock inte, det var bland annat en av lärdomarna man lärde sig av HMS Smyge hur man skulle utforma skrovet så att svallvågorna inte skulle avslöja fartygets position.
CmJH, då kan du kanske berätta varför vågor från dessa fartyg inte syns när alla andra vågor syns? Du ser ju på videon att den skapar stora tydliga svall.
Vi kan ju börja med att konstatera, för det verkar inte vara självklart för dig, att Visby inte på något sätt är osynlig för radar. Allting handlar om att reducera radarns effekt. Det går inte att ta bort svallvågor på ett fartyg av den här typen, dock är skrovet konstruerat för att reducera dem.

Juu jag vet att Hamina är ju inte perfekt, men också har ni många problem med Visby corvetten. Vi har mycket samma vapensystem, och samma fartyg. Hamina är mindre och snabbare, och Visby har lite grann mer "punch". Vi Finnar och svenskar är ju alltid på samma sida, heh sorry about my high school swedish. At least I try.

Försvaret står inte och faller med F17G. För att kunna försvara Gotland behövs markförband. Och de enda som finns direkt tillgängliga är Hemvärnet. Tyvärr är nog Gotland redan försvarlöst. Fast det är OT i denna video.

I am familiar with the ships you mentioned. But they were not the topic of discussion. But since they are now, obviously, the frigates would be more suitable for international operations than the skjolds. I wonder why the ships have so few vls tubes when they can obviously hold more? Just 8!!! Before you say it, I know they hold 4 ESSMs each for a total of 32. Still, there is room for 32-48 tubes for other weapons. You bought Aegis. Spend the extra money and get those missile tubes..lol

The point is, if Norway had overseas peacetime missions as a major requirement, you would have gotten a frigate size ship with good endurance, not a patrol boat.
I hope you don't seriously think that these skjold class boats are the only ships we have ??!! By the end of 2010, Norway will have 5 new frigates in the Fridtjof Nansen class. 3 has already been delivered. We also have many other ships of older date, like Minesweepers, MTB's, Submarines logistics ships etc. They are all capable of entering international operations and many of them are part of NATO's response force.
The Visby is much bigger(274 tons displacement for the Skjold vs about 650 for the Visby) and has much greater endurance. The Skjold is an air cushion/catamaran hull vehicle so it should be fast. It just doesn't go far. But for coastal patrols, I guess they feel it's adequate. Remember, it's first defense is stealth. Once discovered, even 60 knots won't enable it to out run any aircraft or missiles chasing it.
Used abroad on missions? Unless you mean Sweden and Denmark, you will have to tow it there..lol. Which you could do. It has been done before. But I fail to see what overseas actions currently happening this would be suitable for that couldn't be handled better by something bigger.
Our old Hauk class patrol boat's have been deployed in the Med near Gibraltar in the last few years. If they can, so can the new ones.
The Skjold class has been all the way to the USA, Mexico and Caribbean, crossing the Atlantic. So it is possible, it just require planning. Stopping at Iceland for fuel for instance.
Norway has no interest in roaming the world oceans continuesly. However that does'nt mean that the boats can't be deployed for local missions around the world.
Sorry to say, but the Skjold class ships were operational way long before the Visby class, thereby being the first operational stealth warships. In fact, no weapon systems have even been installed in the Visby class ships.
Not true. They have 8 rbs-15s and the 57mm gun. A sam system has already been chosen. Other weapons are planned along with a heli hangar. What good would it be with no weapons? There would be no sense in having it.
Of course, I just try to say that (as far is have read the last couple days) only the 57mm has been installed, while the first Skjold class vessels have now been fitted with all planned systems. As far as I know, only the NSM missiles themselves are missing, as the launch platforms etc. have already been installed. My point is that the Skjold class vessels are the first operational stealth warships.

8 RB15 är inte illa för ett fartyg i den storleken. Motsvarande andra fartyg som har RB15 har endast 2 eller 4 robotar.

Göteborgs klassen är 20m kortare och har även den 8st RBS15, för att inte tala om en kanon mer... så även stockholms klassen. till och med norrköpings klassen hade 8st och det är en modifierad torpedbåt...
Med de vapensystem Visbykorvetten har behövs bara tre fartyg för att kunna bekämpa mål i hela Östersjön. Ponera att Sverige har 8 korvetter med liknande vapensystem... så nog klarar vi oss allt.
Eftersom Visby inte syns på radar... länge... opererar man ifrån svensk skärgård så ännu längre, addera flygvapnet över Östersjön så blir de ännu svårare att slå ut. Betydligt mer än 5 minuter.
Ni syns ju på radar. There is no such thing as complete stealth, only partial. It depends on what wavelenghts you are damping. You can't damp them all. We use the same technology, it's nothing new.
Not really, the Hamina class don't have the same stealth capability as the Visby class. Further on Visby is heavier armed and it is also much faster then the Hamina class. That Visby is bigger I also sea as an advantage; Visby can stay out at sea much longer then the Hamina.
So no you're wrong, Visby is a better ship. But Hamina is also a good ship and i'd like to have the Hamina as a complement to the Visby ships in our navy.
I wouldn't actually say that Visby is a better ship, but a different and more suitable to the swedish coastal defence ,it is. The smallness of Hamina can also be seen as an advantage and if wikipedia is to be trusted, Visby class lacks of the same level of AA-capabilities that Hamina has ( Umkhontos ). The Weapon systems and high-tech electronics are pretty much the same. And well, isn't Hamina also cheaper ? Ship defending finland's gulf archipelago has little use for stealth capabilities.
The 3 ships (Visby, Skjold and Hamina class)were made to fill 3 different sets of requirements. All 3 have it over each other in numerous scenarios, so arguing over which of the 3 is best is academic. Supposedly, the Umkhontos has also been chosen for the Visby. The Visby does, however, have the greatest growth potential because of its greater size.

Bullshit! Korvetten har sjömålsrobot 15..tillräckligt avancerad luftvärnskanon..som kan skjuta ner inkommande robotar/raketer/andra anti-missil vapen.
Minor kanske inte detta fartyg skall hålla på med! Finns minfartyg eller ubåtar för denna uppgiften..vetdu!
Men håller med dig om en sak..rusta inte ner Försvaret. Gör det mindre men vassare, effektivare än det är idag!

Sweden should take two Visbys and...join them together!..creating a catamaran! That will be amazing!
Advantages:
-1100-1200t of weight;
-same crew number;
-almost the same "island" with a bigger heli hangar;
-more space for: two helicopters-transport and attack/support (Bell UH-1Y Huey and Bell AZ-10 Cobra with a common 84% components including engines/cockpit avionics and the 4 bladed main rotor folding system!), bigger landing deck, internal missle pods on the port and starboard bows!

That is one mean looking ship! But the wake looks like it's going to be a problem.
I've seen photos of the ocean taking by satellite and you can always spot a ship by it's wake, and it's very surprising how the "V" shaped bow wave extends outward for many miles, The Visby may be invisible to radar but I'm afraid it still can't hide like a submarine can.

For a naval craft it is moving on. It's got to be a 1st class ship. No doubt that the arsenal inside equals the speed of the vessel. Swedish littoral subs are the best in the world. I red of exercise with a US naval war game the Swedish Unterseeboat could not be found in the exercise. The US Navy asked Sweden to allow a year long testing to find the real capability of these UBoats. They are able to spend up to 2 months submerged. Even nuclear Uboats have to come up for food, air, & water.

All helicopters in the armed forces belong to the air force, but some of our ships can carry helicopters.
For example in a few months we are sending the minelayer HMS Carlskrona to take part in Operation Atalanta and the ship is supposed to be carrying an Augusta A109.

This ship looks kick ass! You Swedes make some killer weapon systems! Visby, Gripen and BAE Archer artillery systems! I would love it if Canada were to start buying these systems. We need to start rebuilding our forces.

Vi kan ju börja med att konstatera, för det verkar inte vara självklart för dig, att Visby inte på något sätt är osynlig för radar. Allting handlar om att reducera radarns effekt. Det går inte att ta bort svallvågor på ett fartyg av den här typen, dock är skrovet konstruerat för att reducera dem.

Juu jag vet att Hamina är ju inte perfekt, men också har ni många problem med Visby corvetten. Vi har mycket samma vapensystem, och samma fartyg. Hamina är mindre och snabbare, och Visby har lite grann mer "punch". Vi Finnar och svenskar är ju alltid på samma sida, heh sorry about my high school swedish. At least I try.

You can't say we're the leader in military power, when we don't even have a fifth generation fighter at our disposal. I'd say the U.S. is the leader in military technology (not so odd, considering the sums they put on research and development of the military).
As for the leader in technology, that's definately Japan.
We're pretty fancy too, don't get me wrong. Honesty never hurts though.

Ah, water is denser, and therefore more buoyant. Buoyancy, resistance, density, etc., are different manifestations of the same thing: concepts are always more limited than reality. :D

Min pappa är en av dom få militärerna på F17 Gotland och det är kris om nerlägning just nu, det kommer läggas ner eller så kommer det bli större och ha typ 100 anställda och 3 Jasar och typ 1 SK-60 och en massa :/ och om F17 Gotland läggs ner äre ju risk att ryssarna eller något annat land kommer på Besök :(//och då mennar jag inte fika.. Försvaret står inte och faller med F17G. För att kunna försvara Gotland behövs markförband. Och de enda som finns direkt tillgängliga är Hemvärnet. Tyvärr är nog Gotland redan försvarlöst. Fast det är OT i denna video.

Men på fullt allvar, hade Ryssland gjort något mot Sverige, så hade de största västerländerna reagerat kraftigt med arga brev och internt illatalande om den ryska björnen.
Vi har inget att frukta från ryssarna i dagsläget.

En aning gammal film. Livflottarna är numera integrerade i fartyget, den konformade domen över SL-radarn finns numera. Vid tiden för denna films tillblivelse kallades SLC, av oss varvsarbetare, för "Det svarta hålet". Det fanns överhuvudtaget inget här, bara svart kolfiber.

I am familiar with the ships you mentioned. But they were not the topic of discussion. But since they are now, obviously, the frigates would be more suitable for international operations than the skjolds. I wonder why the ships have so few vls tubes when they can obviously hold more? Just 8!!! Before you say it, I know they hold 4 ESSMs each for a total of 32. Still, there is room for 32-48 tubes for other weapons. You bought Aegis. Spend the extra money and get those missile tubes..lol

I realize they can do it. The vikings did it in a lot less boat than the skjold..lol That doesn't mean they are really suitable for it. As for Gibraltar, c'mon..lol That's a vacation cruise. What threats are there? And I'm sure they had access to friendly bases for fuel and supplies. The point is, if Norway had overseas peacetime missions as a major requirement, you would have gotten a frigate size ship with good endurance, not a patrol boat.

I hope you don't seriously think that these skjold class boats are the only ships we have ??!! By the end of 2010, Norway will have 5 new frigates in the Fridtjof Nansen class. 3 has already been delivered. We also have many other ships of older date, like Minesweepers, MTB's, Submarines logistics ships etc. They are all capable of entering international operations and many of them are part of NATO's response force.

The Visby is much bigger(274 tons displacement for the Skjold vs about 650 for the Visby) and has much greater endurance. The Skjold is an air cushion/catamaran hull vehicle so it should be fast. It just doesn't go far. But for coastal patrols, I guess they feel it's adequate. Remember, it's first defense is stealth. Once discovered, even 60 knots won't enable it to out run any aircraft or missiles chasing it.

Used abroad on missions? Unless you mean Sweden and Denmark, you will have to tow it there..lol. Which you could do. It has been done before. But I fail to see what overseas actions currently happening this would be suitable for that couldn't be handled better by something bigger.

Our old Hauk class patrol boat's have been deployed in the Med near Gibraltar in the last few years. If they can, so can the new ones.
The Skjold class has been all the way to the USA, Mexico and Caribbean, crossing the Atlantic. So it is possible, it just require planning. Stopping at Iceland for fuel for instance.
Norway has no interest in roaming the world oceans continuesly. However that does'nt mean that the boats can't be deployed for local missions around the world.

Sorry to say, but the Skjold class ships were operational way long before the Visby class, thereby being the first operational stealth warships. In fact, no weapon systems have even been installed in the Visby class ships.

Not true. They have 8 rbs-15s and the 57mm gun. A sam system has already been chosen. Other weapons are planned along with a heli hangar. What good would it be with no weapons? There would be no sense in having it.

Of course, I just try to say that (as far is have read the last couple days) only the 57mm has been installed, while the first Skjold class vessels have now been fitted with all planned systems. As far as I know, only the NSM missiles themselves are missing, as the launch platforms etc. have already been installed. My point is that the Skjold class vessels are the first operational stealth warships.

Vänta med att såga den tills den är färdig och är förbandsatt. Visby ligger fortfarande på Provturskommandot och är med andra ord inte färdig än. Det finns utrymmen på fartyget som är anpassade för LV-system och man planerar att sätta in Sydafrikanska Umkhonto robotar där.
8 RB15 är inte illa för ett fartyg i den storleken. Motsvarande andra fartyg som har RB15 har endast 2 eller 4 robotar.
Din kritik är både onyanserad och präglad av okunskap.

Umkhonto tillhörde de inköp som ströks redan under Borgs tal på Gotland i somras.
Göteborgs klassen är 20m kortare och har även den 8st RBS15, för att inte tala om en kanon mer... så även stockholms klassen. till och med norrköpings klassen hade 8st och det är en modifierad torpedbåt...

Med de vapensystem Visbykorvetten har behövs bara tre fartyg för att kunna bekämpa mål i hela Östersjön. Ponera att Sverige har 8 korvetter med liknande vapensystem... så nog klarar vi oss allt.

Ni syns ju på radar. There is no such thing as complete stealth, only partial. It depends on what wavelenghts you are damping. You can't damp them all. We use the same technology, it's nothing new.

Not really, the Hamina class don't have the same stealth capability as the Visby class. Further on Visby is heavier armed and it is also much faster then the Hamina class. That Visby is bigger I also sea as an advantage; Visby can stay out at sea much longer then the Hamina.
So no you're wrong, Visby is a better ship. But Hamina is also a good ship and i'd like to have the Hamina as a complement to the Visby ships in our navy.

I wouldn't actually say that Visby is a better ship, but a different and more suitable to the swedish coastal defence ,it is. The smallness of Hamina can also be seen as an advantage and if wikipedia is to be trusted, Visby class lacks of the same level of AA-capabilities that Hamina has ( Umkhontos ). The Weapon systems and high-tech electronics are pretty much the same. And well, isn't Hamina also cheaper ? Ship defending finland's gulf archipelago has little use for stealth capabilities.

The 3 ships (Visby, Skjold and Hamina class)were made to fill 3 different sets of requirements. All 3 have it over each other in numerous scenarios, so arguing over which of the 3 is best is academic. Supposedly, the Umkhontos has also been chosen for the Visby. The Visby does, however, have the greatest growth potential because of its greater size.
