I often wonder how poeple can socialize with wild preditors the same manner they do as a pet like this family here with Eddy. I mean you hear about it all the time: some owner/trainer/zoo keeper getting attack out of the blue and all of a sudden for an unknown reason when there had been a strong relationship with the animal up to that point. Just look at Sigfried and Roy.
I wonder if it's actually possible to build a real relationship with a preditor like that. They are killers after all.
It's usually people other than those who raised the animal that get attacked. I'm not saying it's safe or smart to do of course. In Eddy's case, they did move him out of the house and with other animals when he grew older. Without their help, he might have died by his own father, and his mother may not have known how to care for him.
In Roy's case that was not a case of a natural killer. If Montecore wanted him dead he would be dead. It's speculated he was trying to drag him to safety.
Cheetahs and cougars are the biggest cats that can purr. All cats can make happy sounds if they want to though. I'm not sure what kind of sound leopards make when happy/greeting, but tigers "chuff."
Actually I'm pretty sure that they can purr, just not while breathing in, and they generally don't do it. The same structure that gives the big cats the roaring sound, the ossified hyoid, makes it so they can't purr while breathing in.
Oddly enough, I had 2 rabbits that purred at one time. Though I guess they probably wouldn't have if they hadn't had any contact with the cat, so since they aren't even carnivores, it's probably pretty common in mammals to be able to, they just don't do it.
Those people are my heros!

Saw him on "Animal Planet" and I fell in love with him. You can tell he loved the family that took care of him.
