For many years I had always thought John Williams was the composer to end all composers along with a list of other favorites. While Williams work still never ceases to amaze me, I have really come to love and appreciate the sheer brilliance that is Elmer Bernstein. This piece is magical. It is almost like a religious experience for me because of its intoxicating, dream-like quality. Thank you so much for posting this. God Bless.
Youtube has videos on the Odnes Martenot, it's like a cross between a sort-of synthesiser (hence the electrical ethereal hum) but being a keyboard it can deliver greater control and sustained notes than a theramin where the pitch and volume are all modulated by the hand movements.
I thought it was a theramin too - it's a natural enough assumption though I thought it important to correct this, as I have the authoritative information from the CD sleeve and was surprised when I learnt of my error.
@richardhealy Interesting! That was my next guess, though I didn't know what it was called, it's what the Beach Boys used in "Good Vibrations," a close relation to the Theramin.
One of the most exquisite, evocative and unique compositions ever set to film. Thank you Mr Bernstein, and all involved with this masterpiece of cinema.
It's been a long time since I've seen Ghostbusters, but does this music play like that in the movie? It sounds so gentle and beautiful, I can't imagine where it would fit in the movie without losing its delicacy after the dialogue and natural sounds are put over it.
The music heard at :35 to 1:05 is played during the scene from :16 to :44 it works very well there with the flow of scene. The music from 1:09 actually kind of syncs up with the scene its played over until 1:46 then at 2:11 the music is from the scene where the Ghostbusters find Dana within the remains of the terror dog shell. It really plays on the emotional scene of Peter and Dana reuniting after he previously had thought she was disintegrated in the 'crossing the streams' blast.
This is my second favorite Elmer Bernstein score. This hauntingly beautiful theme sounds very similar to Taarna's theme from Heavy Metal, which has my all time favorite Bernstein score.
the music is one of the many reasons why ghostbusters is an incredible movie

This piece of music is why I'm buying a theramin.

Haven't heard this in a long time. That IS a theramin, right? What better instrument for a romantic theme in a ghost movie!

@JadyLester
Checked my notes from the CD-insert* and it's not a thermin but a rare kind of French keyboard called an Odnes Martenot
*lucky enough to win it e-bay.

Elmer Bernstein is a great composer, he even had a little of this for "Heavy Metal" which is another Reitman production from Columbia.
