Cool catch! Some people say that once you work for the railroad you aren't a railfan anymore. I guess they're wrong. Also I was just out in Rochelle, IL and met a CSX engineer railfanning on his vacation.
I'm a railfan now and hope to work for the railroad someday. A conductor or maybe an engineer if possible. I am colorblind with some colors but can tell between red, yellow and green.
How was the GP9 pulling them? I'm pretty sure most MU sets have a weird type of coupler not compatible with Janey Knuckle Couplers like those used on almost all US trains. I have a photo of a Metro-North MU in Grand Central Terminal, and it has those odd couplers too.
All of MNR's electric fleet (M-1A/2/3-A/4/6/7-A) come equipped with a "compromise coupler", which is a special coupler knuckle that is affixed to the MU plows, and when needed for use, the coupler is secured to the MU coupler, with the opposite end being compatible with standard railroad couplers for tows using diesel locomotives. These compromise couplers can be seen on the front of any MNR or LIRR MU car located adjacent to the plow.
No, it was doing the typical speed of about 40 MPH for equipment moves using the 543 or the 750. This stretch had recently been upgraded for higher speeds for the area by CP 216.

Never!! Once a railfan, ALWAYS a railfan!! Being a railroader on top of it makes it that much more fun!! The more you learn!!

Yeah she can haul ass. I haven't see your fav, the 543, in action on the main, I always see either 750 or the 101-106

Whooowhee! She still sounds good! Just as noisy as I always knew her to be, and running at a good clip too. Kinda fast for coming into the yard, eh?

Hey dude that was a great shot. Thank you for the e-mail. The 750 still has the balls for a 55 year old GP-9
