No No No! Schizophrenia is a psychotic illness which is thought to be genetic and is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and can be contolled by medication. Split personality is a personality/identity disorder which can not be treated with medication and is thought to be caused by traumatic life experience. Gollum is not showing any symptoms of schizophrenia. Go and read a basic book on psychiatry.

What was even more insane about the filming of this is that it was all done in a single shot, with two cameras at two different angles, and this guy would just flip back and forth between Smeagol and Gollum like flipping a switch. He should have won an award just for his work here...Andy Serkis also did the body work for King Kong, as well as Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Schizophrenia is not the same thing as having multiple personalities. That is Dissociative Identity Disorder. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder characterized by hallucinations and/or delusions among other things.

@XxXxMariscaLxXxX It's not motion capture. That's all keyframe animation. The animators at WETA are super talented. They were able to duplicate this performance perfectly which is amazing. You can see if you watch closely that the animators amped up the performance too so it doesn't look stiff and "rotoscoped". They are a talented bunch and never get enough credit for Gollum. They were just as much responsible for the performance as Serkis was.

@Aupas they record the footage as seen above, and then the insert into a computer. In the computer, they make him look more golllum like(shrink him down, make his eyes bigger) and that's pretty much the final thing. Hope that helped

the quick cuts in the sequence make it a very stylized, theatrical presentation. not so much method acting's realism, just dramatizing different voices in his head as combo of past trauma & stewing in his inner alchemy too long. hard to say MPD or schizo, etc when it's dramatized stylization, not king lear, much less medically precise recreation. just my 2c.

@markust1994 It's corrected mocap. Animators clean up the data and accent the performance so you don't get the floaty/jittery look of raw mocap. Animated characters tend to look weightless if they exactly duplicate the movements of real people (whether through mocap or rotoscoping). That's why it's important to go through and exaggerate the movement.

But, if his perfomence is good enough it's completely possble the he could win planet of the apes since it's a motion capture performence and it's really him.
