The reason why the movie is so dark is actually just because what we are watching is the only surviving copy and just happens to be a very dark print. Its one of those lucky mistakes like in Dracula when they didn't think to add music and made the film so much creepier. If there was a better quality print available I doubt The old dark house would be as creepy as it is now.

Wow, I seriously did not know that! 0__0 In the movie they first imply that the character Rose was a actress after she came to America and survived the Titianic, and at the end they have the camera pan across to show old photos of her. Makes me wonder if they didn't know in a old picture of Stewert as a young actress just for a easter egg or two.

Well done...graet review! When I was a kid Channel 4 (a new british channel back then) ran a series of old B/W horrors. This was one of them and I loved it. It stuck in my mind as everything an old black and white horror shoud be. The fact that in later years I discovered that Whale and Karloff were invilved simply added to the mythos.

@JohnnyBoiiFelix It might be hard to believe, but from silent cinema(1920) to the early talkies, to end of WWII(1945), the movies basically covered every single kind of story that has ever been told. Every movie since then has really been cliche or at least taken something from those first early films. Like in James' review for The Man They Could Not Hang, he explains it was actually an early prototype for the SAW movies. There's so much ignorance about these old films, it's almost unbelievable.
