I think this is my favorite version of this song purely because of Jimmy's playing. Absolutely, raw and blistering. When you're as fearless as this band was sometimes you're going to be "sloppy" but you're also going to be transcendent. "Better to live one day as lion, than a 100 years as a sheep" or something like that.

@MrSistermaryelephant exactly its jimmy page he looks at the overall sound not just technique, its the collective sound that matters from everyone and thats what makes good music
Hes a musical genius. One of the most influential guitarists in rock history.
Though his live playing wasnt as accurate and clean, but it had more power and you never knew what was gonna happen.
Even Jimmy hates some shows and loves others, just as we do. Drugs sometimes worked for him, but not everytime. Playing guitar while youre high as fuck aint easy. A clean performance is impossible, but you might end up playing really badass shit!!! am I right Jimmy?
And one more thing : Read "Hammer of the Gods" if you haven't already. As a matter of fact, I'm going to roll up a fatty & watch "The Song Remains the Same" right now.
I love Led Zeppelin but let's face it - their live performances got worse over time. Plant sounds great on the studio version. This performance has him sounding like a drunk girl sitting in with a cover band. Page is sloppy and out of tune. John Bonham (as plastered & opstreperous as he constantly was) and John Paul Jones always played well. Thanks but I'll stick to their studio & EARLY live stuff.

livinlifted91 - I was there. Knebworth 1979. I was 21yrs old. It was their last concert before John Bonham (God rest his soul) passed away. It was awesome as I grew up with their music from the age of 11yrs. I am trying to learn this on guitar (today) I'm now nearly 53yrs (but 21 again watching this). No other band has come anywhere near to equalling what Led Zep gave us. Led Zep 1 - 4 should be compulsory listening to all children at age 12. Approx. 1/3 of their output was acoustic!

@Polybun this does sound pretty poor but do yourself a favour and find some more mate specifically royal albert hall 1970 msg 73 and earls court 75. plenty to get stuck in to. then come back and reply to me :)
you see, no music is "good". its all a matter of opinion. I for one think that 70s and 80s rock was the best music. No matter what though, this is a FACT- it does not take ANY talant to have a computer fix all of your vocal mistakes. There are opinions on what music is good, but there is no debating what takes skill or not. everyone here has to admit one day that some of these new artists have a bit of talant, but most of what people call talant these days is false.
@livinlifted91 my sister saw zep in 75 richfield oh fans without tickets threw rocks at the windows of the coliseum!!! thats all she remembers!!! to top it all off she didnt do drugs either!!! to this day i still ask her you have to remember something from the show!!!!! talk about a waste of a ticket!! i was only 7 at the time man just give all of us a chance to see the greatest band live ONCE!!! i know i would remember something!!!!
@livinlifted91 Just to compound your abject misery, I saw Zeppelin in 1969 in a small hall behind a pub called The Rounhouse in Dagenham, Essex just after the first album came out. The hall held 300 people and the band were sensational. I also saw Derek and the Dominoes second ever British gig, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and loads of other great bands in the same place and they were all great. It only cost 15 shillings in those days (75 pence in today's money). Have a nice day.
i wish i would have been born back then, so i could have watched all these great bands play..i wish people could make music like this these days, what am i suppose to tell my kids..i could watch hannah montana concerts??? fuck that!!! my dad tells me about all these great zeppelin concerts and aerosmith concerts..makes me wanna cry
@f150man55 I was a teen when they were hot, but top 40 was still crap. Disco and other shit. It wasn't easy getting Zep on the radio. We had to buy their records and tapes. It was still a great time to be alive though, Pink Floyd, Stones, among other greats. Thank God for the net Eh?
1975 the 70's were my teens and i have such fond memory's - we were alive on fire and fueled by the passion of this music and its message. fun fun fun
fuck today's commercialized music. I can respect an artist / band that makes the music they love because they love it (don't get me wrong, Rock is and will always be my fav genre) but now music is about popularity and selling it to as many people as you can. Thumb if you believe music is about the music itself.
@slasherguitarmaster Music has always been 90% commercialized product and 10% raw artistic talent. I believe that Led Zeppelin and a few others such as the Beatles will be remembered because they had artistic talent. During their times, commercialized bands were just there to get their gig and make money while artistic musicians were worshiped. The problem is that today, talent is made fun of and commercial competition seems to be the most desired.
@slasherguitarmaster Director Jim Jarmusch's 3rd rule could be applied to record labels: Rule #3: The production is there to serve the film. The film is not there to serve the production. Unfortunately, in the world of filmmaking this is almost universally backwards. The film is not being made to serve the budget, the schedule, or the resumes of those involved. Filmmakers who don’t understand this should be hung from their ankles and asked why the sky appears to be upside down.
lol, how can he mess up if its his song. who the fuck cares anyway, i relish jimmy pages mistakes, hes a demi god, i hate unnapproacheable perfection.
the fact that all of you are comparing jimmy to pete townshend while he was in the middle of a huge heroin addiction is kinda saying something about how good he was.....
I'd have to agree with e.g. Townshend's live playing being much better! Page's studio leads were very calculated (and none the less genius), but this didn't work out as well live whereas Pete Townshend really shined live, as did The Who, being a better liveband than studioband anyways!
Led Zep was a great 'studio' band, but they suck live. It's either Page doing great and Plant sucking or Plant sounding great, and Page sucking. Usually live, Plant sucks. I still love Zeppelin though.
@ASurvivor1 I bet to differ, look at their older stuff from the early 70s. They only reason Page sucks here, and Plant can't sing for crap is because Plant has a throat surgery in 1974, and Page is in the middle of a heroin addiction. Listen to something from MSG 73 or Denmark 69, and you'll be amazed.
@Calibersz You have to admit his Page's 'Live' guitar leads don't measure up to his studio leads at all. I have a lot of early Zep Live on DVD and I'm mostly disappointed with Page's live guitar playing. Now Townsend, his live guitar is just as good as his studio stuff,
@ASurvivor1 Actually if you ever have time, type in "Stairway to Heaven live" and watch the MSG 1973 version. I think we can come to the conclusion that his playing is much better in that concert, than in the studio.
The Beatles require a Great deal of Intellect to Understand. Led zeppelin Require Just as Great a deal of Intellect to Understand. As do Queen, Who, Floyd, Stones, Dylan, Beach Boys (Brian Wilson), Doors, Hendrix, and Many other Great Classic Rock artists.
To Intellectual People - these are all parts of a Whole, Greater than most of you will ever understand.
For those who are not Intellectual - Hard Rock like Zeppelin and Metal like Sabbath will always appeal more - because it's Simpler.
@CentraCross sex, drugs and rock'n'roll is all we need, but in moderation... if you overindulge in one, then you miss the idea. the three are a ballance to be carefully kept
@drunkattheparty sex, drugs, and rock n roll are a by-product of love. You don't get those things if you don't truly love what you do; Musically. People like you are the ones ruining it for all the people who love music for music. Not the superficial stereotypes.
@CentraCross Since Zepp fans are so 'simple' minded-let me put into simple words, that an arrogant "intellectual" fuck like you can EASILY understand-
LED ZEPPELIN -BIGGEST,BADDEST 'ROCK AND ROLL' band.........EVER!!!
@charger4079 Yeah they are, but there's a lot more to it than that. Which you need to be aware of when comparing them to other artist like The Beatles. That's what it was about, not critisizing your appreciation of the music.
@charger4079 I agree. i respect music that makes no claim to intelligence and just sounds great rather than tries to be 'deep' and fails as pretentious garbage. Zep's lyrics aren't trying to be intelligent- they're supposed to inspire you emotionally and spiritually once you forgo your rational mind.
@CentraCross I wouldn't exactly call Zeppelin simpler. They're song structures and riffs are one of a kind. But I agree with you 100% on these bands being part of a whole. I never would've thought of it that way.
@xGoWxZoltaN No, not Zeppelin as a band, but in many ways hard rock as a genre. Zeppelin obviously go way beyond any one else at anything they did, including turning simple Hard Rock into something highly advanced.
The thing is - Zeppelin actually created a lot of it, so it's extremely hard to compare them to other Hard Rock playing artists.
In the same way it's nearly impossible to compare The Beatles with other Classic rock acts, as they created most of it.
@CentraCross I thought composers like Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Debussy made intellectual music, but I guess I was wrong. This is clearly what intellectual music is supposed to sound like:
Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.
And clearly the Beatles require more intellect to understand than Zeppelin. Two minute love songs are way more complicated than a ten minute epic with an army of guitars, a long solo, and time changes.
@MMAharaja Did you even read the whole comment or just the last paragraph? Zeppelin did simple(r) music AS WELL. It's called plain Hard Rock. I don't primarily admire Zep for the straight blues-rock riff songs they did - there were many others who did that, and did it much "simpler" (AC/DC) - but for the semi-progressive incredibly wide-genred softer, heavier Rock. Everything they did is awesome, but if you had to lose something - i'd rather lose the Metal.
@CentraCross The Beatles did some Hard Rock/Metal, but not near as much as Zeppelin - on the other hand they did more 50s style R'n'R.That was 4-5 years before Classic Rock started to grow, and 10 years before Zeppelin (though not Page). You listen to the rest of the music around that time and you'll see how different The Beatles actually were.
@CentraCross Of course I read the whole thing. I just noticed that you called out Zeppelin for releasing some simple songs while not calling the Beatles out when they did it too.
And metal can be extremely complex. I take it you haven't spent much time listening to technical death metal or prog metal. Even some classic metal is a lot more "intellectual" than the Beatles. As far as Zeppelin, one of their most musically "intellectual" songs, Achilles Last Stand, can be considered metal.
@MMAharaja Yeah I get what you're saying, but The Beatles' early stuff was actually more "intellectual" as such than most of the music around.
Many of you assume that Zep's and early Beatles' music can be compared on equal terms. It cannot. The difference the entire music world experienced, in all areas, between 62 and 70 is overwhelming.
There was more progress during The Beatles' 7-year recording career than during the entire 80s, 90s 00s and late 70s together - far more than during Zep's.
@MMAharaja And yes - Metal and Hard Rock can obviously be very complex - but that doesn't have to change how you listen to it. Simply the fact that it's a Hard, heavy, metallic song makes you appreciate it as "simple". Of course you can Really Listen to it and it will be difference, but it's more shrouded and easy-listened than for example Psychedelic or Rockabilly. With such songs you have to be more "aware" or it will all get "I don't get this - it's weird, and I think it sucks."
cant help thinking page sounds awesome and plant is unusually average

LADYHW 10 months ago
you see, no music is "good". its all a matter of opinion.

Have a nice day.

fuck today's commercialized music. I can respect an artist / band that makes the music they love because they love it (don't get me wrong, Rock is and will always be my fav genre) but now music is about popularity and selling it to as many people as you can. Thumb if you believe music is about the music itself.
slasherguitarmaster 1 year ago 64

Filmmakers who don’t understand this should be hung from their ankles and asked why the sky appears to be upside down.

the fact that all of you are comparing jimmy to pete townshend while he was in the middle of a huge heroin addiction is kinda saying something about how good he was.....
TheZAPPAfied 1 year ago
@ASurvivor1

ASurvivor1 1 year ago
@ASurvivor1 haaaaa! they were high most of the time :D
TheFernandotorres17 1 year ago
@ASurvivor1 I bet to differ, look at their older stuff from the early 70s. They only reason Page sucks here, and Plant can't sing for crap is because Plant has a throat surgery in 1974, and Page is in the middle of a heroin addiction. Listen to something from MSG 73 or Denmark 69, and you'll be amazed.
Calibersz 1 year ago
@Calibersz You have to admit his Page's 'Live' guitar leads don't measure up to his studio leads at all. I have a lot of early Zep Live on DVD and I'm mostly disappointed with Page's live guitar playing. Now Townsend, his live guitar is just as good as his studio stuff,
ASurvivor1 1 year ago
@ASurvivor1 Actually if you ever have time, type in "Stairway to Heaven live" and watch the MSG 1973 version. I think we can come to the conclusion that his playing is much better in that concert, than in the studio.
Calibersz 1 year ago
Lol, i know almost everyone smoked back then, but, lol, that cigarette makes him look so stupid.

CentraCross 1 year ago
@CentraCross they also require an open mind... had some of my best trips rockin with zep... no drugs, just zep
drunkattheparty 1 year ago
@drunkattheparty Yes, an open mind and the imagination to realize what they're actually saying.
I agree, there's no need for drugs when the music itself is so mentally empowering.
However, if we only have Sex and Rock'n'Roll left, we'll have to find something else to complete the trinity.
CentraCross 1 year ago
@CentraCross sex, drugs and rock'n'roll is all we need, but in moderation... if you overindulge in one, then you miss the idea. the three are a ballance to be carefully kept
drunkattheparty 1 year ago
@drunkattheparty And if you want to loose the drugs alltogether?
CentraCross 1 year ago
@drunkattheparty sex, drugs, and rock n roll are a by-product of love. You don't get those things if you don't truly love what you do; Musically. People like you are the ones ruining it for all the people who love music for music. Not the superficial stereotypes.
xGoWxZoltaN 1 year ago
@CentraCross Since Zepp fans are so 'simple' minded-let me put into simple words, that an arrogant "intellectual" fuck like you can EASILY understand-
LED ZEPPELIN -BIGGEST,BADDEST 'ROCK AND ROLL' band.........EVER!!!
charger4079 1 year ago 44
@charger4079 Yeah they are, but there's a lot more to it than that. Which you need to be aware of when comparing them to other artist like The Beatles. That's what it was about, not critisizing your appreciation of the music.
Certain "Intellectuals" need to know their level.
CentraCross 1 year ago
@charger4079 I agree. i respect music that makes no claim to intelligence and just sounds great rather than tries to be 'deep' and fails as pretentious garbage. Zep's lyrics aren't trying to be intelligent- they're supposed to inspire you emotionally and spiritually once you forgo your rational mind.

@CentraCross I wouldn't exactly call Zeppelin simpler. They're song structures and riffs are one of a kind. But I agree with you 100% on these bands being part of a whole. I never would've thought of it that way.
xGoWxZoltaN 1 year ago
@xGoWxZoltaN No, not Zeppelin as a band, but in many ways hard rock as a genre. Zeppelin obviously go way beyond any one else at anything they did, including turning simple Hard Rock into something highly advanced.
The thing is - Zeppelin actually created a lot of it, so it's extremely hard to compare them to other Hard Rock playing artists.
In the same way it's nearly impossible to compare The Beatles with other Classic rock acts, as they created most of it.
CentraCross 1 year ago
@CentraCross I thought composers like Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Debussy made intellectual music, but I guess I was wrong. This is clearly what intellectual music is supposed to sound like:
Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.
And clearly the Beatles require more intellect to understand than Zeppelin. Two minute love songs are way more complicated than a ten minute epic with an army of guitars, a long solo, and time changes.

charger4079 10 months ago
@MMAharaja Did you even read the whole comment or just the last paragraph? Zeppelin did simple(r) music AS WELL. It's called plain Hard Rock. I don't primarily admire Zep for the straight blues-rock riff songs they did - there were many others who did that, and did it much "simpler" (AC/DC) - but for the semi-progressive incredibly wide-genred softer, heavier Rock. Everything they did is awesome, but if you had to lose something - i'd rather lose the Metal.
CentraCross 10 months ago
@CentraCross The Beatles did some Hard Rock/Metal, but not near as much as Zeppelin - on the other hand they did more 50s style R'n'R.That was 4-5 years before Classic Rock started to grow, and 10 years before Zeppelin (though not Page). You listen to the rest of the music around that time and you'll see how different The Beatles actually were.
CentraCross 10 months ago
@CentraCross Of course I read the whole thing. I just noticed that you called out Zeppelin for releasing some simple songs while not calling the Beatles out when they did it too.
And metal can be extremely complex. I take it you haven't spent much time listening to technical death metal or prog metal. Even some classic metal is a lot more "intellectual" than the Beatles. As far as Zeppelin, one of their most musically "intellectual" songs, Achilles Last Stand, can be considered metal.
MMAharaja 10 months ago
@MMAharaja Yeah I get what you're saying, but The Beatles' early stuff was actually more "intellectual" as such than most of the music around.
Many of you assume that Zep's and early Beatles' music can be compared on equal terms. It cannot. The difference the entire music world experienced, in all areas, between 62 and 70 is overwhelming.
There was more progress during The Beatles' 7-year recording career than during the entire 80s, 90s 00s and late 70s together - far more than during Zep's.
CentraCross 10 months ago
@MMAharaja And yes - Metal and Hard Rock can obviously be very complex - but that doesn't have to change how you listen to it. Simply the fact that it's a Hard, heavy, metallic song makes you appreciate it as "simple". Of course you can Really Listen to it and it will be difference, but it's more shrouded and easy-listened than for example Psychedelic or Rockabilly. With such songs you have to be more "aware" or it will all get "I don't get this - it's weird, and I think it sucks."
CentraCross 10 months ago
