You can still see John Sinclair around town in Detroit (or Amsterdam--he spends a lot of time there, not surprisingly). I used to run into him once in a while when I lived there. Still a radical old dude.

You can still see John Sinclair around town in Detroit (or Amsterdam--he spends a lot of time there, not surprisingly). I used to run into him once in a while when I lived there. Still a radical old dude.

I love this song but John Sinclair was a true asshole. When he got out of jail he turned around and sued Lennon because he didn't get a cut of the proceeds from the concert that was held on his own behalf. I'm getting my info from the book Lennon In America 1971-1980, Based In Part On The Lost Lennon Diaries by Geoffrey Giuliano.

@MrsGuevara that book is suspect. The author pulled his "facts" from an unpublished source that he claims was a journal by Lennon given to him by singer who happened to have died before he published it. Real credible source.

as far as I know by an interview few weeks before beeing shot dead...John asked a dear friend to give his first son Julian the copy of his journal..nonetheless..Yoko refused and didn't respect John's will..
nobody still doesn't know where john's diaries could be..

@ChiaraMichela A manwho worked for John and Yoko before he died, had the journals and diaries. From there he wrote of Lennon's thoughts on his exile for 5 years in the Dakota. Pretty great book. It's called Nowhere Man by Anthony Seaman i believe. Not hard to find. I highly recommend it.

as fun as conspiracy theories are, if the cia wanted to kill him they wouldve done it much earlier. in 1980 they had no reason to. he was 40, not starting revolutions but rather living the life of a house husband and spending time w sean. hardly a threat to order and convention... as far as the reagan comment is concerned, reagan was elected in 1980, sworn in in 1981 so thats irrelevant

Maybe they could, but it would not have been possible to cover it up. Chapman was the perfect cover for them. They didn't know he was a limousine liberal until later after that period was over. What in the world would be the reason to kill a househusband in 1980 after the conventions and election that year? I don't know what this has to do with my comment but you're wrong.
OK, John wanted to live, having his phones tapped and being fallowed made him more than a little nervous. It's not a good sign when they've got to plant dope on you and then ask you to leave a country. He fought it and won that battle but lost his life.

great song by John and Yoko, about another John (Sinclair)who was and still is a great advocate for progressive social change, peace, and freedom.
This performance took place in Ann Arbor at Crisler Arena, the U of Michigan's basketball arena. I have been there many times for games and often wonder what it must have been like to have been at the Free John Sinclair rally.

Within three days of the protest song being played first at a pro-Sinclair rally 10 Dec 1971 the authoritites had released John Sinclair only 27 months into the sentence.
