I had mine since 2003. It's a 5.25" diameter size. There were 12 shrimps at the beginning. About a year later, there were 8 left. It's now at its perfect balance between 6 ~ 7 shrimps. The shrimps have reproduced countless of times already. Lighting is the key, but never sunlight. I turn on my office fluorescent light between 9 and 5, Monday thru Friday and nearly total darkness on the weekends. This light cycle, I believe, is the reason why mine maintain it's perfect balance.
Pestered the hell outta my mom to get me one of these for my birthday a few years back.
Everything was good till they eventually started dying off, then I felt awful watching the last ones suffer and starve in this little sealed prison... Really messed with my head :(
It's amazing how people can watch little organisms run their daily lives and never get bored. I mean I can stare and admire my aquarium for hours when I have better things to do. It fascinates me.
Your opae'ula will do better if the container is not closed. I have mine in a 3 gal. glass container, and they have babies all the time. I place my container by a north facing window so that they have indirect sunlight most of the time. The water mix is one part ocean water to three parts fresh water. Try it. I think you'll see a big difference in the size and color of the opae'ula.
i feel sad for them :(

You can't - it's sealed and if the shrimp die, you need to get them to refill them.
