I think that Claudio Roditi is better overall. Sure, Arturo has the range, but Roditi has much better phrasing and improv abilities. His features sound so much better than Arturo's. You might not have your mouth wide open because Arturo is busting his lip, but the musicality is stupendous.
that's why you probably have both in the band. I'm playing bigband-lead-trumpet and my 2nd trumpeter is probably, no definitly technically and improskill better than i am. But he can't reach the screaming heigth that i do and doesn't have the (musical) ego, necessary to lead even through rumbling, unsecure passages. BUT we respect each others profession. Which is why the matter of fact sharing of "jobs" is just perfect, like in this awesome band!
@schnieef Its a piccolo trumpet, and from the way the lead pipe was on there I think it might of been in the key of A(those trumpets have leads pipes that are pitched in Bb but can be extended down to A) and he is playing the Prince of Denmark's March
Thank you, Captain! for sending me into Trumpet Heaven..... my thousand thanks! .... if only I had been lucky enough to see this in person.... but now with your help..... I'm a little closer to Trumpet Heaven...
Thank you so much for posting the series. Loved Arturo's C-trumpet skit, not to mention the phenominal end. Is there any way to divide this by songs as oppossed to the 10 part segments you've got going now? Love it anyway, and keep up the great work Joshie
I have had this CD for the longest and I am happy to see the actual video I have watched all ten and played along on me knee to all of them(the licks hehehehe).
There are many great players in that auditorium. However, Arturo Sandova takes the cake. His whistle register is unmatched by anyone, even today. To stay somewhat in tune with that kind of power while still reaching the upper register is ridiculous. Dizzy was a great composer and player. But Sandoval range, technique, & unmatched upper register are what make him untouchable. Also, Paquito is an improv genius. Dizzy did a great job in putting this together.
@happyfacehomes Hi I think Sandova is fantastic you like who you like. I think diz was 72 yrs. of age.I wonder have you heard of a guy named Roy Ekdridge? Howard Mcgee? Who about Louis Armstrong?
James Moody is one who can show that he`s a good human being through his playing. That`s unique ! Just watch the facial expressions on his fellowmmen throughout his solo. Also 10 points to the filming crew here
I like Roditi plays here. :D

I loved it. I just wished the cut between videos didn't split up the bass solo.

I think his solo is good, but why does Claudio continue to do the half-valving? It actually starts to get annoying.
tammerman175 3 years ago
he is mking the trumpet sound as if it was a "cueca" a brazilian instrument
