@GHHG8675 Smokeythestlukesdog is spot on! This song was around in the late 60's. it was used in goodfellas in which the lyrics pertained to nothing in the show as was only used as incidental music. It's too great a song to be used for such triviality.
Donovan's voice here reminds me of the phoney lawyer Pete Postlethwaite played in The Usual Suspects. Also, odd as it sounds, the intro lyrics give a good hypothesis if Atlantis led to the rise of ancient cultures.
Sounds brilliant in Goodfellas when DiNero and Pesci beat the fuck out of Billy Batts....can't remember the name of the guy playing him but am sure he was also in The Sopranos....and its a cool tune to screw to..... try it! ;)
One of Donovan's best! And, an excellent job on the sound quality, Binks.
Clarification: Billy Batts was not beaten to death as this song played in GoodFellas. Batts was beaten unconscious in the bar and only appears to be dead. He was later stabbed and shot to end his life.
@LordOfTheBinks Perhaps the widest exposure this song received was during Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas as the overture while character Billy Batts is beaten to death google it
If there was ever any man that should never have been thrusted into stardom, it was this guy. I remember watching as he had his father place flowers around his stage, bending and bowing like some hippie mahirishi. I thought back to all the working class dads that had created pop and rock stars, and laughed at this cirumvention of nature. What did Elton John's military dad shout to him from the porch of his Luton home as he son turned to go back to his limousine? Oh yeah: "Get a proper job!"
Yea.. I saw this happen on TV. He came down the aisle in some flowing guru outfit hehe.
I like the man's music but he the hurdy gurdy man and I never really gave the his due.
Just me, I suppose. I was in love with clapton, hendrix etc.. the harder the better. Donovan was a bit like milquetoast for my diet. But this was a great song for him.
One of my favourite songs by Donovan. The first time I heard this song, I cried.

If anyone ever tries to beat me to death, I want this song playing in the background.
