Remember when men could play instruments and actually sing instead of just saying c*nt and ho a few dozen times while a drum machine goes in the background? I'll never get tired of the 80s, back when bands were bands. Long live Styx, Journey, ELO, VH, Foreigner, Heart ... oh yeah, remember when women could sing too, and without autotune? :-P
This song was recorded when music mattered.... bands were real musicians. Now it's so much hype and ridiculous rap/hip hop nonsense that gets tiresome upon the second listening. Styx was an amazing band. Dennis deYoung's solo album, Desert Moon, is one of the best recordings ever.
Styx was one of the greatest bands from the early 70's to the early 90's. It sucks that music like this has taken a back seat to these teeny bopper songs on the radio nowadays. If Styx was to release this song today, they wouldn't stand a chance.
MR. DE YOUNG IF YOURE READING THIS, PLS REUNITE WITH STYX!! WE THE FANS MAY NOT UNDERSTAND THE BAD BLOOD THAT YOU HAD WITH REST OF THE BAND, BUT FOR LOYAL FANS , IT WILL BE A HISTORICAL COME BACK AND PEOPLE WILL LOVE YOU FOR THAT...A CALL FROM THE FANS
I had a copy of Styx' Greatest Hits a few years ago, and this song was a fitting closing song for that album. It was the 16th of 16 songs. There's no other song like it. However, a hand goes up for the 7th track on the album, "Show Me The Way."
Styx was the poorman version of Queen-lol! Even Chuck Pannozo tried to have the Freddie Mercury look. You don't believe me they were what I say? Check out the song Babe, Lady, and many others.
GREAT, VERY GREAT!!!!!!! I REMEMBER DURING MY HIGHSCHOOL. I ALWAYS LISTENED TO THIS MUSIC. HOW I WISH I HAD A COMPONENT DURING THAT TIME . SO JUST LISTEN TO A TRANSISTOR RADIO THAT DAY. BUT IT WOULD NEVER FADE TO MY EARS..[ MEL IBOG]
However, one peculiar example is the Rolling Stones. This is debatable as each incarnation seemed to have varying degrees of success. Brian Jones, who would die one month after quitting the band, was one of the founding members (along with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and Ian Stewart - with Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts joining by the start of 1963).
Mick Taylor replaced Jones from 1969-74, and Ronnie Wood had replaced Taylor since 1976.
I saw them in 1980 and I thought they were lip-syncing they sounded so good .. if it wasn't for talking between songs and some extended solos you would have thought they were playing a tape ... truly one of the best live acts
I saw Styx in Charleston, WV in 1977 for the Grand Illusion Tour. I absolutely love them! The group is not the same without Dennis but they still sound good to me.
@stoopidmonkeyful I couldn't agree more... I've loved this band since the 1970's but saw them live for the first time in 2009. And they were phenomenal of course but without Dennis' singing, the impact of their songs he would have normally sung just didn't quite have the same effect. Siomply tragic because they truly are epic.
@stoopidmonkeyful Nope!! Without Dennis is like trying to do Priest without Halford, Journey without Perry, Maiden without Dickerson.... Its not real!!
Epic performance of an epic song. The live version on Caught In the Act trumped the studio version on Kilroy. My favorite Dennis DeYoung song on Kilroy which the band did actually perform live (the others were Cold War and Don't Let it End Reprise whilst Mr. Roboto, Heavy Metal Poisoning and Haven't We Been Here Before were sung live but the instrumental backing tracks were used). I know people tend to pinpoint to Roboto on KWH but this song was also a Top 10 hit.

I love this song! What a voice! Dennis DeYoung is the best! I was in high school when Styx took over the air waves. Those were memorable days. The bands nowadays can't hold a song next to them. SANDY!
What can I do, Pictures of you still make me cry Trying to live without your love It's so hard to do Some nights I wake up I look at your pillow Hoping that I'll see you there But I get up each day Not much to say I've nowhere to go Loneliness fills me up inside 'Cause I'm missing you
This is real STYX! Dennis, John, Chuck, JY and Tommy. Take one out and it is not the same (the first five records were great and Edge of the Century had its moments) but without Dennis DeYoung, the band s*cks!
