  • my school does this thing every year where the 8th graders present a "Living Museum" where all the 8th grade students pick a legend, hero, or barrier breaker who has changed society, research them, and make themselves into an exhibit. I choose Jonathan Larson, but my brainless teacher said he had done nothing to help society and does not meet the criteria for this project. I've never been so pissed off in my life. This man is a genuis.

  • I got shivers the second he began singing. oh my god, rest in peace jonathan. <3 rent's your legacy.

  • Thank you , Jonathan Larson . <3

    RIP <3

  • Thank you, Jonathan Larson! And thank you to kpiscoolie for posting. Jonathan's life proves, there is indeed no day, but today.

  • can you please please please post the rest!!!!

  • RIP to one of the best Musical writers EVER!

  • BTW - I'm not saying this isn't Jonathan mind you, I'm just curious about the origins of this recording.

  • @MissSai99 its online to purchase .... it is him....

  • I'm curious as to how you obtained this recording as well. One would think that any recording of Joanthan singing would be more "static" and less produced as this seems to be. Also, I would have thought he would be playing paino while singing. Hmm...

  • How did u get this recording of him singing this

  • :O he was so good!!!!!! It's a shame he died at such a young age. I wish he could have seen how big of hit he wrote!!!!!

  • Oh my goodness, my heart is breaking right now. Such a talented writer with such heart in his music. He will be missed!

  • He may not have been the greatest singer, but he had such a way with his art.

  • RENT was definitely the song(s) that Johnathan left behind.

  • I cried. RIP and La Vie Boheme Jon!

  • wow, so...wonderful

  • Oh Jon.... I'm in tears. He's left behind such a legacy.

  • Losing him was such a hit to the entire music industry... He was brilliant... Just so bloody brilliant... Thank you, God, for putting him on this earth to create, and thank you, Jonathan Larson, for the beauty you created in your work. Rest in peace.

  • listening him to Jonathon sing this song, i actually don't think this song was particularity written about Rodger, i think he was writing about himself, the hole song is about writing a song that would rock the world! and Jonathon wrote a musical that rocked the world. And Jonathon didn't wanna leave this world without leaving something to prove he was here. i could be totally off but this song remarkably reflects his life

Thank you Jonathon Larson, Thank you.

  • Oh, Jonathan. You lovely man. You write gorgeous music. But you were not born to sing. :)

  • @rachel869 that's why he wrote a musical for other people to sing his music.

  • i really do not like this version, i think his voice sounds too whiney. But i bet lots of people love it.

  • I cried while listening to this. The song has more of a meaning with Jonathan singing it.

  • @luvalot1993 I came dangerously close to tearing up... Just the parallels that are out there and then just the beauty of his music... His voice was not entirely suited to the song, but the song in itself... Glorious. :)

  • Pure genius....what a talent. THANK YOU, Jonathan Larson.

  • Well, at least he never "wasted opportunities...." and he truly found that "one last refrain!"

  • I found this guy in my drama class today in a video we watched. He seemed interesting so I wanted to check him out. I'm glad I did because he's fantastic.

  • Jonathan was absolutely correct when he said, "I am the future of musical theatre."

  • RIP JONATHAN. MUSIC GENUIS

  • gosh, his voice makes my heart melt. makes me want to cry like a baby

  • This is honestly the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. You left more than just a song behind, Jonathan. And you definitely found your glory <3

  • R.I.P Jonathan

  • wow. so powerful when you think of how this song actually applied to his life. How could he no that this musical would indeed be his one song glory...

  • I wonder if that was Mimi knocking on his door...

  • Does anyone else hear the knock at the end of the song

  • i love this because we get to hear jonathan's original emotional intentions for this song, and what it meant to him

  • He had such a beautiful voice

    Rest In Peace

  • Aww that's so wonderful! He had such a gentle voice. Even though he wasn't going full-out, you can hear the passion.

  • thank you jonathan larson. <3

  • Johnathan, you are missed by so many people each day, including me. I love you and I am proud of the heart. soul and dedication you put into Rent. I send up 4 claps to you everyday. : ] I am sorry I never got to see your show when it was on Broadway, but I know I would have absolutely been blown away by it. You are an extraordinary person John, and you make the whole world smile :). Viva La Vie Boheme <3

  • I'll flat out say that Adam Pascal 'sounds' better. But Larson singing it sounds more honest, and that's what matters, I'd take this over any other recording any day. There's just something about hearing it directly from the source.

  • R.I.P. Jothan Larson!

If only you would be here to see how BIG your show has gotten and is still getting! And how it has greatly affected theatre! I know that because of your show my love for theatre has grown. <3

  • pure brilliance,

RIP Jonathan Larson, you truly deserve it.

  • wow it actually sound a little bit better when he sings it

i mean don't get me wrong the way adam pascal did it was awesome but it just sounds better

  • Jonathan, trust me, you found it. You found it. RIP.

  • Wow.

The entire demo of Rent is definetly worth hearing. Jonathan sang most of the parts.

  • <3

    thank you jonathan larson.

  • we can only hope he was put past the pirly gates like he should be

  • RIP, you wonderful man. -shakes head- gave me chills, this did, and made me cry. Wonderful.

  • speachless.

    I love him.

I will probably end up naming my child after him.

    <3

    :'(

  • It's so different with him singing this because this is his memorial... this man was a genius.

  • I did research and found out that the knocking at the end of the song is actually a neighbor who is upset about the "noise" being made. Since Jonathan lived in a small apartment (thin walls) this was a problem when he was recording at home.

  • @GabSophie123 actually no... it's mimi knocking on the door before "light my candle" ... duh.

  • @austinzach00 hey lets be nice alright.. she might have not known this.

  • @austinzach00 That knocking was before the song even ended, how could that have been Mimi? I thing GabSophie123 might be right.

  • omg this is so touching!

  • I just watched his biogrophy on my rent dvd and i cant help but shead a tear.. He was such a great person and he worked so hard on all his plays, songs, etc.. I feel so bad for him :( I hope he's even happier up there

  • it gives me chills.

so eerie knowing that RENT's theme pretty much foretells his tragic death. it seems as if he knew it were coming. such a beautiful message. jonathan larson truly is my hero. i respect him far more than any other writer or playwrite.

  • for anyone who's interested, the tapping at the end is mimi knocking on his door before light my candle

  • Absolutely beautiful. It holds so much more meaning when Jon sings it because it eerily seems to parallel what happens to him the night before the opening show of RENT

  • @GundamFanGirl you are so right!!!!

  • thnx for posting this! where diid you get this?

  • From his demo tapes that were put onto a CD. I ordered mine from my local FYE, but I believe you can find it on Amazon. "Jonathan Sings Larson"

  • "Before the virus takes hold" makes more sense in Rent, but I LOVE the lyric change to "Before you enter the light." Rest in peace Jonathon.

  • How did he have all this stuff in his head, and how did he have the talent to get it out to the world.?

  • He wrote the show based on La Boheme, but most of the characters were based on his actual friends, some who died from aids.

  • Where did you find this? I love Adam Pascal's version, but this one is amazing because it's got so much more meaning coming from Jonathan Larson.

  • <3 This song is so much sadder when Jon sings it because, he had all this fame in front of him, and he was taken from it :[

  • I just think its sadder when he sings it, because he wrote it and everything that happened in his show was happening all around him.

  • @MrMusicJosh you can relate jonathan to almost every character. this song obviously

mark trying to film his surroundings...which is kinda what he did with the musical...

just yeah...very meaningful show...im not a huge fan of the show itself...but i love the meaning and everything surrounding it.

  • There will never be another one like Jonathan.
