Interesting interview with Johnny Crawford on the casting and the show. I see it now on a "memorable" tv channel. Loved the show as a kid, Jonny and I are the same age. Great TV. Wonderful tribute to the role and the man.
The Rifleman was the greatest TV western ever, as lekocafe has already said.
I loved it when I was a kid, Lucas McCain was my hero, and Mark was the son I wanted to be. I even had a Rifleman gun, and it was my pride and joy.
After being off the air for for 48 years (I can't believe it's been that long), they're finally starting to show reruns. Hooray! I remembered the theme song completely, and enjoy the show now as much as I did when I was 8-13!
I am now 62 years old and have recently been reflecting on how my values were shaped at a very young age by the tv shows I watched regularly as a young boy. The Rifleman probably stands above the other shows because of the tremendous relationship it depicted between Luke McCain and his son Mark.
I think the culture has lost a lot by abandoning the dramatic embodiment of those values that made this the greatest nation on earth.
We may not see these great shows of the past on tv anymore. All I can say is I'm glad that some of them are available on dvd. That way you can watch them anytime, and you don't have to wait for a certain day and time.
I still watch The Rifleman everyday on cable. I did some research on Chuck Connors and didn't know that he died almost 20 years ago. He really was a hero and a great man in real life. Great tribute!!
Boy, did that tug at my heart! I watched that as a kid, as well as "Gunsmoke","Wanted Dead or Alive", "Have Gun, Will Travel", "Bonanza", etc. I miss those days too! I also loved Davey Crockett! :)
Excellent family show with wonderful actors & great plots; I remember being riveted to the floor in front of the TV & just holding my breath in anticipation of what was to happen next. It is a shame the disservice that the movie industry has fallen into today following the paths of the spirit of the world & preaching immoral ways of living through the False Media. Another wonderful show was Gun Smoke!
Great tribute, thank you for sharing. It's to bad shows like this, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, The Virginian, etc are gone forever. They just don't make them like the great ones of earlier years! I miss all of them.
@Strollini Don't forget " Have gun will travel " " Colt 45' "Bat Masterson " " Lawman " Sugarfoot " " Wanted Dead or Alive " & a hundred more great westerns that were on TV in the great days Gone but not forgotten.?
4:21 video: Music is Hero sung by Mariah Carey; tribute to The Rifleman; title role played by Chuck Connors.
Chuck Connors (April 10, 1921 – November 10, 1992) was an American actor; best known role from his forty-year film career was Lucas McCain in the 1960's ABC hit Western series "The Rifleman."
Wow a show showing a father teaching a son how to be a good man. Wow what a novel idea for a tv show ! Sure wish we had this show back. We sure the hell need it...
A father's love for his son.... their bond so strong nothing would break it.... nothing would come between it.... a father unashamed to show his affection for his son who meant so much to him... whom he cared for after the death of his wife .... a true hero for us all !
I agree 1Fullaflava. I start watching The Rifleman on WHT and enjoy watching it very much. He seemed to actually get along with Johnny Crawford. He's was believable as a father in this show. No else could play him the way Chuck Conners did. He was perfect and made Lucas McCain his own. I love this show.

I love The Rifleman today more than ever! I watch the 2 back-to-back 30 minute episodes on World Harvest Television (WHT) whenever possible. The best western writers like Sam Peckinpah worked on this great classic show. Chuck Connors was so believable this role partly because he was a professional baseball & basketball player. At 6' 5" he was a strong, awesome presence. Gunsmoke is comparable in content to this show. I miss these shows, we just don't have it like this anymore.
One of the few western show especialy the black and white ones that wasnt so damn campy like "well pa im goin inot town for a good ol gunfight :) be back for supper"
