How long did it take you to fully train him to get on? I'm getting a white german shepherd puppy and i want to do this for them hot days because we have been having heat waves and when its rainy out that comes in handy i bet and in the cold weather!
@7041alexus About a week or two, just started slowly and it is esp. helpful when your dog is high energy even after running/walking! He loves it now and has even gotten up and scratched to try to get it started. The biggest thing was starting him to just get used to it and putting treats on it and making if a fun experience because in the beginning they probably won't get it. On days (very rare) that he doesn't want to get on, I don't make him because it's his "toy"and should be fun.
@nilly4321 Thanks! I'm saving money to I can do this because or the weather but nice days i would love to take him out for a walk.We did not get our new puppy get but we hope soon! Thanks for replying!
My dog will only stay on the treadmill with treats; I've tried to take the treats slowly away but it doesn't help. I can't keep him on it for more than a minute; if he doesn't get treats he gets off. If we leash him he'll fight and stop. He does not like to feel forced to do anything.
@max1morgan2 Don't force your dog up or he'll end up never wanting to do it. I started my dog verrry slow. Just putting treats on the treadmill. He stays on for about an hour and at times if we haven't got our run outside at times he get up and wants to go. Just go slow, make it fun, do a little at time and praise him. Maybe take a break and just put treats on the treadmill without making him go and then try a short run with lots of praise.
Thank you for your reply. I think the reason I was having a hard time with it is because I allowed him to freely jump off, no force at all because if I leashed him he would struggle out of it. So I had to put the treadmill in the corner and block him from getting off. I don't think he realized that's what was looking for but now he's doing great. We are only at 25 minutes so far. I have uploaded a video of my problem and then my fix for it if you'd like to view it. Thanks again
would you recommend me doing this with my border collie every day in the morning, right before i go to school, for about 20min instead of a walk? i was thinking about changing her (my dog) schedule a bit, because i wanted to bring her to college with me (and i'm going to rent an apartment).
maybe 20min jog in the morning, 30min outdoorsy games in the afternoon, and 20min jog before bed? is that too much or too little?

@HellRemains666 It's a "human" treadmill I got on Craigslist. The walking belt part is 55 inches... has been pleny long for him and he's a big boy

That poor dog is too damn skinny. Especially if you're going to be having him on a treadmill, he needs to eat more.

Once I set up the treadmill, I'm going to teach Kai to walk on it for when ever one of us gets sick or if it's too nasty outside. Great video!

@maria6201 With that level of grammatical ability, is it a surprise that you own a pitbull? :)

I love this dog!! This is the best dog treadmill training I've seen. Great idea... Kaden should teach a class. Very creative.
