@tubervidfreak Yeah.... does anyone know the name? NFL Films has played this music during their highlight reels from the late '70s into the early '80s.
One of the greatest upsets in NBA playoff history. The idea of a bunch of young guys with only 1 guy over the age of 30 beating the defending world champions, a team which had the great Dr. J and Moses Malone, plus Andrew Toney, Mo Cheeks and Bobby Jones was unfathomable at the time.
As a Nets fan since they were still in New York, this is still my favorite memory of the team even with them reaching the Finals in 2002 and 2003. Very fun team to watch and Dawkins said in his book what a great coach Albeck was to play for. Birdsong thought this team matched up well with those 2002/2003 Nets that reached the finals. Would've been extremely fun to see Richardson and Kidd go head to head.
How did Denver beat Seattle & Golden State beat Dallas? the underdog team just wanted it more. That Nets team was young, dangerous team with alot of depth. They had All-Stars Otis Birdsong, Mike Ray Richardson, & Buck Williams. And a great supporting cast with Darryl Dawkins, Albert King, Kelvin Ransey, & Mike O'Koren. They could beat anyone on any given night. Not to mention they played mind games by retiring Dr. J's #32 the night of the 1st game in New Jersey. LoL
@WiltatKansas anything can happen in sports. this was a great series. no home teams won on their court. remember the 1981 rockets, 1994 supersonics, & the 1999 knicks ? i love to see new records set in the NBA.
I think Dr. J regrets that quote more then the "we owe you one" after the 1977 loss to Portland. Michael Ray was great. Bottom line the 62 win champion Celtics were just better then the 52 win Sixers. Andrew Toney hardly missed any games that year so that was not a factor. Look it up.
Micheal Ray Ricardson was one of the great guards that could have been. He had a drug problem but before that occured he was like Magic Johnson. Not quite as big but he was faster and more explosive than even Magic. Im not saying he was better than Magic but he could have been in that class had he stayed clean
The energy from the championship season was GONE!. The defense from the Chapionship season was GONE! During the Championship season they had knees wrapped , Doc got poked in the eye and they still was unstoppable that year. This team was lethargic all year long and a complete opposite of the championship team the year before. They got what they deserved.
I'd have to agree, the difference seems like when the teams of latter years collapsed they collapsed, this 76ers club playing coulda beat this team at will, but in the end they didn't. Any semi basketball fan could name at least 2 players from this team, Ray Richardson, Birdsong, Albert King and Buck Williams are long forgotten

Nobody outside of North Jersey had the Nets beating the 76ers in the 84 Playoffs

To me, this is one of the underrated NBA playoff upsets.

The Sixers from that year remind of the 1986 Chicago Bears.

What happened to that Sixers team they were idiots or domething? How a champion with that team could being eliminate by an emergent team.

Bird called Michael Ray the greatest trash talker he ever played against.

What a stupid statement Erving made "mail in the stats" Wow that was unlike him but I guess winning a championship made him overconfident.

This is the biggest playoff upset in history...even bigger than Mavericks-Warriors 2007 because the Sixers had Dr. J and Moses Malone...

No..the biggest playoff upset would have to be ten years after this..1994 Denver vs Seattle in the Western Conference First Round..

I wouldn't call Buck Williams long forgotten. He was a valuable member of the Portland Trail Blazers and went to the Finals twice with that group.
