Love this, I wish somebody could produce a complete package of some old school Rush like this, to bad Rush never recorded some good versions concerts like this, man do I love Rush!!!
I remember this performance. I watched it on tv on a saturday night. I'm guessing 73-74 I was about 14 and I was hooked to 70s rock. This kicks ass baby!
I was 12 years old in '76. I remember 2 things from that year. The bi-centennial, and I discovered RUSH. Big year for me. You and I know you're right, any RUSH fan can see that's Neil, the spinning sticks are obvious even without seeing him. Continue to educate the wannabe's, and congrats for having awesome taste! Wish we could have another 30+ years!
What's amazing is that when this video was taken the guys were probably not even 30. I saw them at Quicken Loans Arena for the Time Machine tour in April and they can STILL bring it just like this and they are now pushing 60! RUSH FOREVER!!!!!!
I like rock , but wats annoying is how people praise some bands like their god etc, get off their dicks fucking fanatics theyre rich while u extreme fanatics are still poor or middle class
@ANARCHYGOD2012 This has nothing to do with frkn fame or fortune. People are fanatics about certain bands like rush because of their music. It's not about the damn money when it comes to playing music and if that's the case, then that person(s) don't deserve to play music. Rush only plays cause of the passion for music and joy of it.
@lbarto88 I'm not disputing who the drummer was on Rush's first album. That WAS John. This VIDEO has Neil Peart playing drums. Pretty obvious throughout the video (listen to his triplets) and there is pretty good segments where you can see Neil plainly. Definitely very early for Neil.
@lbarto88 John was canned in July of '74 after the album was released. This Don Kirshner Rock Concert performance was taped in October of that year with Neil.
I hope that any young band that watches this video will take from this account that this is the way to take those first steps to stardom. Rush are your teachers.
its like fck im not tryin to hate fuck . everything i fuckin say everything i say man well fuck you no what im sayin well fuck you and everthing you say
Geddy and the 4001 Ric...I wonder how much you could get a brand new one for back in 1974. $1500 - $1600 for a 4003 these days. Still a great instrument, but those 4001's are highly coveted collectibles in large part to the talents of the time who were exclusively playing that particular model: Chris Squire. Paul McCartney, wielding the 4001c64s. My main man Geddy up there. He's played Fender, Ric, Wal,Steinberger - but his '72 Fender Jazz just crushes with that larger than life growl.
The thing that never fails to amaze me as that these 3 guys, who are in need of some deep hair conditioning treatment, can produce and perform this level of sheer rock to absolute perfection as this very early track shows. Look at Neal Peart towards the end, Geddy's bass and vocals are outstanding and Alex... Just excellence .. Rush .. Just the Best. Forever.
You obviously can't read because i said they used synths but what you don't understand is the computer didn't do the work, they played keyboard. And you really can't seriously say they weren't original. They are probably the most creative rock group ever.

@nisonm1 maybey stupid but not stupid enough to spend any dough watching these canadien drug dealers with all their computer backup...they remind me of total tecmo...i gave them a try in like 1998 and walked out after like 16 minutes...too loud and just not that original. every fricken rush song sounded like news kids or wham ramped up...

@ecapa0020 its all called computer generation...i can easily simulate it in my downstairs washroom with the right equiptment...eems the Hall of Fame agrrees with me and the other 299,999,987americans in this country.
@ecapa0020 I agree with you about everything up until the point that you bash U2. I love both U2 and Rush, and to insult U2 breaks my heart. Larry Mullen Jr.'s drumming is excellent in my opinion, as well as the opinion of others. Neil and Larry are equivalent in my eyes.
@ecapa0020 yes… but a better question is "does anyone else care?" Rush are incredibly skilled, but a band of lesser skill can just as easily rock at Rush's level. I'm sure even you can think of one or 2 examples.
@ecapa0020 No rock bands have ever come close to rush when it comes to musicianship, period. Including Zeppelin , though they were my fav growing up, and still my fav pure blues rock band. Also on the list, Yes, Floyd, Who, etc...
I have been a fan since I was 10, and I am 41, so Rutsey was irrelevant anyway. He talked too much for a drummer, and played decent, but not awesome like Peart. I think people just want to be sentimental because he died in 08, but he was not what you would call integral in the development of the most awesome trio in rock history. Triumph holds second place, but they were never like Rush. No one was ever like Rush.
this is neil peart playing. but you are correct ruttsey recorded this with em, but neil joined in 75 because ruttsey was kicked out of the band due to his poor health, and then the greatest band on earth was born.
@ThatGuyThatUdontKnow yes this is definitely neil. they dont look anything alike for one... and neither do their sets... and their playing styles are completely different as well
@SunflowerEmmeline OMG, it would be so wonderful if you'd have them this long when we meet :'D Moi, je les aurai aussi long... je me dis... si je les coupe pas pour 2 ans... pourquoi ils atteindraient pas cette longueur? C: Mais tes parents vont croire que je suis un hippie tiré des années 70 par contre XDDD
The lady on bass, has a really weird voice....just kidding I know it's that Jewish guy Gary, LOVE RUSH, GREATEST BAND ON EARTH.

@ecapa0020 I agree

@msmusic4evr larry is great, but nobody is as close to as good as neil

@ecapa0020 u2 is amazing though

@ecapa0020 yes… but a better question is "does anyone else care?" Rush are incredibly skilled, but a band of lesser skill can just as easily rock at Rush's level. I'm sure even you can think of one or 2 examples.
zortotron 6 months ago
@zortotron Just as easily? Yup yer probably one of the examples, right?
notnilccm 6 months ago
@notnilccm yeah, just as easily. deal with it

DarkMage965 1 year ago
@DarkMage965 neil actually joined in late 74. (to be accurate)
erbonetti 1 year ago
Oops, this is 75, but i still think their first drummer? Maybe i have memory issues... I do know that Peart didn't record the studio cut of this.
redheadedguy00 1 year ago
@redheadedguy00 i think this is Peart playing, it looks like him (watched Rush, beyond the lighted stage last night)
ThatGuyThatUdontKnow 1 year ago
@ThatGuyThatUdontKnow yes this is definitely neil. they dont look anything alike for one... and neither do their sets... and their playing styles are completely different as well
